How did we get here, and what do we do now?
In this searching new exploration of our crisis, Paul Mason argues that at its heart lies an attack on the idea of humanity itself. As the free-market system reduced us to two-dimensional consumers, genetics has stripped us of our belief in humans as agents of change. And now the dystopian forces of the authoritarian right are pushing the world towards a premodern understanding of the human being: one that aims to destroy the very concept of universal human rights and create a new world in which we are biologically destined to form hierarchies based on ethnicity and gender and to obey the demands of religious conformity.
If these forces are not stopped, Mason warns, we will relive something even worse than the 1930s. In response, he demands a radical defence of the human being: a reinvention of humanism; a reassertion of the universality of human rights; and a struggle for a society where biologically determined hierarchies are abolished. We have the power to imagine and design a better system. We must, Mason concludes, reach deep into the history and experience of resistance in order to be our own saviours.

Paul used to be a perfectly decent economics journalist - then he went 7 shades of demented a couple of years ago! It’s incumbent upon everyone to condemn ALL authoritarian regimes; such as every Marxist dystopian regime, large & small, which absolutely rejected the concept of universal human rights; and violated them as a matter of policy, through genocide, forced famine, wholesalse murder, torture and rape. “The free-market system reduced us to two-dimensional consumers,” but Paul’s vaunted system reduced well in excess of 100 million human beings to non-dimensional tangible remains.
There does not exist the possibility of an authoritarian regime in the US. This assertion is unmitigated nonsense. The Trump debacle, in all likelihood, has its season finale next November. Even if that does not transpire, and he gets renewed for another season, the inveterate checks and balances are secure.
Russia, China, Turkey, etc. are not strangers to authoritarian regimes - as any student of history would know.
Nothing is falling apart - change does not necessarily equal collapse. When have we not lived during times of change?
The British are probably leaving the EU, this is indeed chaotic for Paul’s nation state - but not for the EU, as Britain was never in the Eurozone. From my vantage point, that could very well mean the breakup of the UK - not “the imminent breakup of the European Union.”
Why does he not appear to understand the origins of the concept of universal human rights? A hopeless student would grasp the history involved.
Too many absurd assumptions! I used to enjoy this guy’s reports on Newsnight. He does seem to oppose racism, so that’s a start - but overall, this wayward pupil must try harder!

I understand that some folk don’t appreciate being stimulated, but - since I am still alive - I personally value this sort of thing.

Paul used to be a decent Marxist journalist till a year or so ago and then he got swallowed up by the Remainers in the Brexit divide. The World Wars and the resultant deaths of millions are on the conscience of capitalism and its progenitor, Imperialism. The loss of communities, the rampant selfishness and in its last stage, now capitalism has already morphed into neoliberalism. Today a foodbank was set up in the Palace of Westminister to feed the cleaning staff and their families whose wages were not paid on time. Just one paycheck away from starvation. Today is the day when Times newspaper published its ‘Rich List’showing that we have a record number of billionaires in the UK. It will take you 32 years of continuous counting to count to a billion. Who needs that much money and why are these billionaires not ashamed of their wealth when a huge number of people in world’s fifth richest country get food from foodbanks and millions of children are growing up below poverty-line?

The wealth-gap is truly mind-boggling - as it was before capitalism. Indeed, the social divide in terms of privilege within appalling, savage fascist/Marxist regimes was/is equally bad. If you’re in the senior hierarchy of the party, or the Soviet Politburo - normal rules do not apply.
People don’t even have the dubious “luxury” of foodbanks during forced, planned famines. Marxist authoritarianism did not build communities of trust - it built concentration camps/gulags. Effectively, death camps. Over 100 million human beings slaughtered, mostly internal repression, because the population under fascism/Marxism is always the ememy. It’s all the one toxic authoritarianism, which we should all condemn.
I don’t understand the British left being opposed to the EU. Virtually all of the positive social, employment and industrial relations legislation and rights over the last four and a half decades have emanated from the EU - not the British left.
In any future trade deals with Britain, the EU and America have all the cards, and can call any play. The only saving option for the British would be if they happened to be a part of, I don’t know, the largest, wealthiest trading/economic bloc in the history of the world; perhaps located with geographic proximity to their closest, most convenient trade routes. Oh, wait a minute…

This is the best time in history to be alive. We are living longer now than at any time in history as a species and Smog Warnings have been rare in N. American for decades thanks to our world leading clean burning technologies. But still some A-holes tell our children the end is near. Usually peace loving DemocRATS.
