A profound expansion of David McCullough, Jr.’s popular commencement speech - a call to arms against a prevailing, narrow, conception of success viewed by millions on YouTube - You Are Not Special is a love letter to students and parents as well as a guide to a truly fulfilling, happy life.
Children today, says David McCullough - high school English teacher, father of four, and son and namesake of the famous historian - are being encouraged to sacrifice passionate engagement with life for specious notions of success. The intense pressure to excel discourages kids from taking chances, failing, and learning empathy and self-confidence from those failures.
In You Are Not Special, McCullough elaborates on his now-famous speech exploring how, for what purpose, and for whose sake, we’re raising our kids. With wry, affectionate humor, McCullough takes on hovering parents, ineffectual schools, professional college prep, electronic distractions, club sports, and generally the manifestations, and the applications and consequences of privilege. By acknowledging that the world is indifferent to them, McCullough takes pressure off of students to be extraordinary achievers and instead exhorts them to roll up their sleeves and do something useful with their advantages.

I beg to differ; people are always telling me how “special” I am. The majority can’t be wrong.

The majority never tell you anything - listen to them.

I remember reading this book a few years ago - it’s kind of ironic because the book it self is definitely anything but special.
Part of the problem is that it is exactly as described - “A profound expansion of David McCullough, Jr.’s popular commencement speech”.
I think (I could be wrong) that the first chapter is an actual transcript of the speech. Fair enough. But every other chapter reads like just another speech. It’s full of passages where he spends half a page just adding words to a list - for example in his famous speech he says at one point “Yes you’ve been pampered, cossetted, doted upon, helmeted, bubble-wrapped…” - and carries on that list of words for a while. In the book, this happens several times per chapter - and each new set of words goes on for quite a while.
Maybe the motivational, style over content (even questionable style though to be fair) format translates to audiobook better than it does to the written word - but even so I’d not waste your time on this if I were you - go read a proper self help book instead

@ssafe - Their eyes are normally filled with tears when they tell me, for some reason.
Good point, dave, many such books often seem like essays or pamphlets, padded and extended to book length. There can be a grain of a good idea inside the forest of words.
But there’s nothing wrong with just adding words to a list. It can be enlightening, improving, edifying, illuminating, educational, uplifting…
