In this outstanding examination of the country’s most troubling problem Dirk Chase Eldredge shows how and why America is losing the war on drugs and makes an important contribution to the debate on alternative policies.
Author Dirk Chase Eldredge demonstrates how the drug war has led only to overcrowded courts and prisons, rising crime, official corruption, eroded civil rights and race relations, and new public-health crises. He makes the case for an alternative strategy: tightly controlled legalization accompanied by expanded drug education, prevention, research, and treatment programs.

50+ years of Anslinger’s lies… The multi million dollar law enforcement industry of America, leaders in the war on drugs, are always losing to a bunch of stoners…

Wow, like every grade schooler doesn’t already know that drugs are bad for you. Sorry, but that’s not an alternative strategy, as we’ve already been doing those things since the 80’s.
An alternative strategy would be to kill the dealers and pushers instead of just putting them in jail for short periods of time. One appeal, and that’s it, death by lethal injection of heroine or an overdose of meth.
No welfare, aid, or SS benefits for users. Mandatory testing for everyone receiving benefits. That’s right, its going to infringe on someone’s rights.
That’s a war on drugs.

I’d rather put a bullet in the head of authoritarian bootlickers like the poster above me than advocating murder for nonviolent crimes.
How about, I dunno, our government NOT declaring war on its own population, but I suppose that’s just crazy talk.

@jonwb, I guess I wouldn’t call someone who deals drugs a non-violent offender when the crap they are dealing can lead to death.
Yes, the death penalty is harsh, but being complacent about the problem hasn’t made it get any better either.

“According to the Bureau of Prisons, there are 207,847 people incarcerated in federal prisons. Roughly half (48.6 percent) are in for drug offenses. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there are 1,358,875 people in state prisons. Of them, 16 percent have a drug crime as their most serious offense.”
That’s the first thing that comes up on a Bing search of “what is the percentage of people in prison on drug charges”.
I would say having almost half the people in the state prison system having drug offenses is a pretty serious flaw in how we’ve been handling the problem.
And while the article is from 2015, I can’t say that I believe the meth, opiods, crack, or heroine distribution in the US has gone down since we’ve legalized pot.
Maybe it’s time for stricter measures.

Screw off, you authoritarian keyboard nutjob. Go live in the Philippines and live vicariously beneath the boot of your strongman. Get rekt. Enjoy the midterms, and Mueller sends his regards. You are not worthy of a more thoughtful response, you murder-hungry, fallacious edgelord.

@wishfire22, my aren’t you a polite individual! We get that you are a flaming liberal who hates Trump. Good for you. Who knows, maybe you will get lucky, and win the House & Senate, and then the Dems could impeach Trump. Most likely, you’ll only win control of the House, so while you may get him impeached, he won’t be expelled from office. So, you really gain nothing.
But, hey, if you’re truly lucky, you’ll get your wish, and then Pence will be President. And you think you hate Trump. Now there is a right wing conservative for you.
Go back to playing checkers in mommy’s basement, because if you actually had a clue about what it takes to pay the bills, you might actually realize that all the liberal B.S. you spout is just that.
Maybe someday you’ll get your wish, and America will become the socialist society that you seem to crave. When it does, remember that you’re the one paying for it all. So unless you’re rich and can easily afford it or poor and have to live on what the government gives you, you’ll be screwed.
You can call me an authoritarian keyboard nutjob, but hey, those middle class Americans like me are dwindling quickly no matter which side is in office. But fools like yourself, or right wing nutjobs, don’t actually have to have solutions to problems, you just whine and cry and expect everyone else to do the work.
Personally, in my opinion, I hope you get your wish, you deserve what you have coming if you do.

Try to remember that this one place is NOT a forum for opinion, but to simply coordinate the sharing of books, to share thanks for this resource and report the occasional error.
Burdening the other users and the system itself with unnecessary chatter and ugly opinions will slow the system down and discourage others from supporting it by adding more content and seeding.
Judge not, for then ye shall be judged …
