How America Lost Its Mind: The Assault on Reason That’s Crippling Our Democracy - Thomas E. Patterson Audiobook
Shared by:hdgdf
Americans are losing touch with reality. On virtually every issue, from climate change to immigration, tens of millions of Americans have opinions and beliefs wildly at odds with fact, rendering them unable to think sensibly about politics. In How America Lost Its Mind, Thomas E. Patterson explains the rise of a world of “alternative facts” and the slow-motion cultural and political calamity unfolding around us.
We don’t have to search far for the forces that are misleading us and tearing us apart: politicians for whom division is a strategy; talk show hosts who have made an industry of outrage; news outlets that wield conflict as a marketing tool; and partisan organizations and foreign agents who spew disinformation to advance a cause, make a buck, or simply amuse themselves. The consequences are severe. How America Lost Its Mind maps a political landscape convulsed with distrust, gridlock, brinksmanship, petty feuding, and deceptive messaging.
As dire as this picture is, and as unlikely as immediate relief might be, Patterson sees a way forward and underscores its urgency. A call to action, his book encourages us to wrest institutional power from ideologues and disruptors and entrust it to sensible citizens and leaders, to restore our commitment to mutual tolerance and restraint, to cleanse the Internet of fake news and disinformation, and to demand a steady supply of trustworthy and relevant information from our news sources.
As philosopher Hannah Arendt wrote decades ago, the rise of demagogues is abetted by “people for whom the distinction between fact and fiction, true and false, no longer exists.” In How America Lost Its Mind, Thomas E. Patterson makes a passionate case for fully and fiercely engaging on the side of truth and mutual respect in our present arms race between fact and fake, unity and division, civility and incivility.

“…to cleanse the Internet of fake news and disinformation, and to demand a steady supply of trustworthy and relevant information from our news sources…”
Mmmm. Well. That makes no sense to me. But then, you are very small.

Too dumb to recognise how ignorant you are.
There’s a lot of that about.

It feels pretty insulting to me, that every time they now invoke “democracy” it is a straight up shot at anything that dissents from the establishments narrative. It is always a call to shut down speech and beliefs that dissent from approved narratives.
It is insulting because of how undemocratic the message always seems to be. When in history was there so much concern for differing opinions. Do you think people suddenly began to have their own ideas?
When has there been such a concerted and frantic effort to control what people think and instead of having the discussions and debates they are always calling for the suppression of differing opinion.
Either they have a totally different definition of democracy or they have no shame or faith in our intelligence, this whole “saving democracy” seems anything but democratic.

Ok, but surely, SantaFe23, you must recognize that there is a difference between fact and opinion.
I had chicken salad for lunch. That’s a fact. I don’t like chicken salad, but it was my only option. Not liking chicken salad is an opinion. It could also be seen as a fact, but it does not supersede the initial fact. We can have a conversation about the pros and cons of chicken salad, but no one can argue that I didn’t actually have chicken salad.
You wanna talk? Let’s talk.

I think you missed what I was trying to say. Have any type of debate you want, the more the better. That is exactly what we should have.
Instead, this book says that people who don’t agree with us, have lost touch with reality and the only cure for that is to “wrest institutional power from ideologues and disruptors and entrust it to sensible citizens and leaders”.
So, for the people who don’t agree with us, we need to take away their positions and ability to speak. So that we can restore, our “democracy”.
And who decides who the ideologues are and the “sensible citizens and leaders”?
Who is decides what “our commitment to mutual tolerance and restraint” is?
The way to save “our democracy” is to “cleanse the Internet of fake news and disinformation, and to demand a steady supply of trustworthy and relevant information from our news sources.”
I am sorry, to me that sounds like shutting down dissenting opinions, taking away peoples right to think and say what they believe, and rather than having debates and dialogues, shut down completely anyone who has differing opinions and take away their jobs. That sounds like the most undemocratic thing imaginable. So much so and so often now, that it is insulting and disgusting. This is straight-up authoritarianism in Marist language. I don’t know what your chicken salad analogy was intended to convey but I think you missed what I was trying to say.

Sir, I ask you read back what you have written.
I started and ended with a very simple premise: Killing needs to stop.
I understand everyone is outraged. Everyone seems to outraged to think about the needless loss if life.
And let me get this clear for myself: Anyone who is not full-in on the continuation of this war is guilty of being a Russian Shill?
How might one bring up legitimate concern over this war and the human cost?
Do you think had we not supplied massive amounts weapons this conflagration it would still be happening?
It really seems like any criticism of any kind that does not jive with the mainstream narrative is easily put aside by the words you guys seem to utter way too easily.
But what is probably most troubling is you Caesar, one of the most well read and thoughtful individuals on this site, not once actually addressed the loss of life. You spoke to who’s wrong and where the anger should go. Not once did you speak to the massive amounts of Ukrainian lives being thrown away irrespective of right or wrong. You did not speak to absolute destruction of their cities and land.
Please know that I know some of deeply care about what’s happening. Please try to understand that by use continue to supply them with weapons and aid while it is meant to support them it is also allowing the fighting to continue with the greatest losses being exacted from Ukraine. I din’t feel the way I do now at the beginning but I am getting the growing and sickly familiar feeling of being mislead once by same bad actors once again. Should we not be able to look at this critically because at this point that could not seem more unlikely
I think we should be able to talk about this without being accused of working for the enemy.

I am not going to argue about what I was trying to say then. There it is. Feel free to post your responses, they are not flattering decency-wise.
I think its clear what I was advocating for.
Just maybe if more people in the West had felt that way we may had been able to end the conflict before Ukraine had lost an entire generation of young men and women, had their country completely destroyed, and do so when Ukraine still had a little bargaining power. On top of the all the horrible things Putin has done. Insult to injury.
I have known you vicariously through comments section for years and years and I have thought you have always had incisive and wise insights into things. (when you are not trying so hard with your fancy linguistics that no one can tell what you were trying to say, that is)
I don’t know why you were so blinded on this one topic. I don’t know why you could not see that all the absolutely horrible things Putin has done to the Ukrainians in his war of aggression still did not mean that the West should not have done everything in its power to push for peace.
Israel had brokered a peace negotiation very soon after Russia began to invade and Boris Johnson went over there and told Volodymyr Zelensky not to agree to any peace negotiation. This was done in large part on behest of Western elites and their interests and not the Ukrainian people and not us. They tried very hard to sell us on the insane escalation you were so adamant about. That is the only reason I invoked covid.
I like you Caesar, I have been on this sight for a long time and so have you. I only bothered asking for an apology (in this hyper partisan world) because you have been intellectually honest throughout the years. I didn’t mean to insult you, not then and not now. I feel bad because good people are advocating for things that they would never advocate for (or so I hope), if it were not for the elaborate and deceptive pysops, fifth gen warfare our elites have turned on their own citizens.
Maybe if you go back and read the things you were calling people who were just trying to get points like this out there, when it was very very unpopular and hard to say, you might understand why I asked in the first place. I am so angry at how we have enabled the destruction of these poor people and their country. Prim rose path.
I don’t know what else to say dude
