As the child of refugees of World War II Europe and a renowned philosopher and scholar of propaganda, Jason Stanley has a deep understanding of how democratic societies can be vulnerable to fascism: Nations don’t have to be fascist to suffer from fascist politics. In fact, fascism’s roots have been present in the United States for more than a century. Alarmed by the pervasive rise of fascist tactics both at home and around the globe, Stanley focuses here on the structures that unite them, laying out and analyzing the ten pillars of fascist politics—the language and beliefs that separate people into an “us” and a “them.” He knits together reflections on history, philosophy, sociology, and critical race theory with stories from contemporary Hungary, Poland, India, Myanmar, and the United States, among other nations. He makes clear the immense danger of underestimating the cumulative power of these tactics, which include exploiting a mythic version of a nation’s past; propaganda that twists the language of democratic ideals against themselves; anti-intellectualism directed against universities and experts; law and order politics predicated on the assumption that members of minority groups are criminals; and fierce attacks on labor groups and welfare. These mechanisms all build on one another, creating and reinforcing divisions and shaping a society vulnerable to the appeals of authoritarian leadership.
By uncovering disturbing patterns that are as prevalent today as ever, Stanley reveals that the stuff of politics—charged by rhetoric and myth—can quickly become policy and reality. Only by recognizing fascists politics, he argues, may we resist its most harmful effects and return to democratic ideals.

The antifa is the modern fascist, all black, like the SS, violently opposing any opinion not their own, like the SA, they believe they’re on the good guys side, history will show they are not…

Antifa is approximately 0.01% of the US population. Most are just college students eager to make the world a better place, and deluded enough to think a brick through a bank window can effect change. They have zero political power.
Our present problem is authoritarians and white supremacists, who combined amount to about 15% of the US population. Enough to throw Republican primaries to inept narcissists and the occasional Neo-nazi, but not enough to sway the relative moderates that dominate US political parties.
In Germany the Nazi party polled 18% in 1930, and 37% in 1932. In 13 years from that later election Germany lay in ruins. The present US is still in 1929 territory.
But many of us see how Trumpism has inspired the authoritarians and white supremacists among us, and we’re concerned. I don’t think it will end for America as it did for Germany. US fascists are profoundly dumb and have been infiltrated top to bottom. But they can do enough damage while they hold sway in the GOP to topple the US from sole superpower status. Just as Putin intended.

This book will be burned in effigy by liberals. They won’t accept the truth, even when it is clear and concise.

Fascism — a form of radical authoritarian ultranationalism, characterized by dictatorial power, forcible suppression of opposition and strong regimentation of society and of the economy. Hate to break it to all the snowflakes or ninjas living in their parent’s basements — but that is what Liberal Democrats what to accomplish, not Conservatives. Fascists remove firearms from the people and LOVE big government.

The Republican system of government in the US is safeguarded by the checks and balances in its Constitution, whereas the Weimar Constitution (otherwise advanced and sophisticated) was undermined by its emergency provisions. Used by Hitler to subvert the Constitution itself.
The Russian economy is the same size as the Italian economy and its vaunted military might is one eighth that of NATO. It is a threat to its neighbours (Russia feared encirclement by NATO) and it is involved (to an unknown extent) in cyber attacks. But it is still more of a global threat in the imagination of the West rather than in reality.
I really don’t know about 15% of the US population being authoritarians and white supremacists. I would imagine such entities are marginal.
As for Antifa, extremists fully prepared to use violence, while at the same time concealing their identities, is a very disturbing development. Why abandon peaceful, democratic protest in order to promote their aims, assuming their objectives are legitimate?
What the conventional left and right should both oppose, if they wish to combat authoritarianism, is the large, powerful, controlling state which can be turned against the individual. However, we continue to offer up every scrap of data, no matter how personal, at the slightest prompting. How will this information eventually be used, and by whom?
With regard to Trump, if you like symbols, perhaps he is symbolic of our age. That kind of empty narcissism, devoid of true, substantial values. We broke it, now we own it.

Give the left the right martyr (really hoping Obama if it has to be anyone)and every night will be Kristallnacht

Odd comments here. The book doesn’t seem to be coming from the right at all. To the contrary, the intro’s description of the 10 pillars are things practiced most by the right, esp by the Trump wing of the GOP: polarizing the country into good and bad people, attacking welfare and implying that people of color & immigrants are criminals, attacking intellectuals at universities & seeking to undermine freedom of expression in higher ed(tenure is its best protection at universities), promoting law-n-order politics, etc.

I can only presume most of the commenters here have not read/ listened to this book, and are just here to soapbox about their own ignorant opinions
Interesting read

Hehe. The ‘right’ commenting without even reading the book.

Commenting on the file/s… the files labelled “10. Arbeit Macht Frei” and “11. Epilogue” are reversed: “10″ is actually “11″ and vice versa. Apart from that, this is a great book. Stanley clearly confirms that #45/#47 has taken his playbook pretty much straight out of “Mein Kampf”. My grandfather — who fought the Germans in WWII — would hang his head in shame that we voted in Hitler’s sidekick out of sheer ignorance only a few years later.

Trump administration is closely following all the ideals this book outlines is facist but unfortantely alot of the comments here are people who didn’t bother to read it and just want to vent while ironically supporting a facist in office. Too much to ask for them to use critical thinking I guess.
