Over the past twenty years, Roger Scruton has been developing a conservative view of human beings, society and culture. The tone of this book is positive and the arguments are recommendations with the aim of convincing the reader that rumours of the death of Western civilisation are greatly exaggerated. Much of our present self doubt, argues Scruton, is brought about by the Darwinian theory of evolution. Darwin encourages us to see human emotion as a reproductive strategy. This is a perspective which Scurton attacks vehemently especially in its modern proponents- Desmond Morris and Richard Dawkins. This the author believes undermines the belief in freedom and the moral imperatives that stem from it.

Britain’s in trouble. Conservatism = the super bourgeoisie social class using politicians, the media, crack pot intellectuals to work at hording the xenophobic mass, so they are given carte blanche.

The whole system is broken. Conservatism goes no where. And left wants to break up national peoples and rebuild countries into hellholes of never ending racial hostility.

But how come in Britain the Cons are so massively successful? Johnson is an international joke; he’s undoubtedly presided over disaster, failure, incompetence, corruption & stupidity (Covid, Brexit, trade, Northern Ireland, etc.).
They swept the opposition aside in their own heartland, and they’ve completely dominated the opinion polls since the last election - 2 yrs ago. In spite of everything.
It’s a little reductive to offer the explanation that the population is racist.

Obviously there’s not much interest in building a society based on the primitive, backward, anti science, hyper controlling, fear of change notions of a certain type of male. The only way conservatives can survive is through fear & force.
Listen to the music, look at the movies, HBO, Netflix, Prime & network tv. No only is most of it not conservative, a bunch of it is anti-conservative. What’s interesting is how some films that are Super-Woke & have favorable reviews from ‘professional reviewers (failed actors & screen writers) totally bomb at the box office, like the woke Terminator. That’s the masses saying, ‘you went too far’.
Super woke & Cancel culture are totally jacked out of all proportion & weaponized by the US media as evil or good depending on which way they are pretending to lean - the US is a one party state.

Very many thanks Mr. Moor. Sir Scruton’s thoughts are like chocolate truffles, such richness.

Chocolate truffles are sickly. You couldn’t live on them.

@caesar963 Because they control most of the media in UK. Their tabloids are selective in how they publish news, pushes what their billionaire owners want. Johnson and his incompetent ilk only does enough to please the next headlines. And as long as the damage is slow and gradual, the new suck can become the ‘norm’. They publish news in a way they tells Johnson what is expected of him or whenever they think he needs to be replaced, he is expendable.

@apnea That is actually not quite true. They are mostly ‘corporate’ in nature. They are perfectly willing to be ‘anti-conservative’ or promote whatever liberal agenda, right up until they have to suggest any “alternative solutions”. It has been so for almost half-century. Putting aside individual celebrities personal politics, the system as a whole will point to some of the problems, perfectly willing to monetized self-mockery but don’t actual have any real honest critique and solutions to the system that it is a part of.
There’s a content creator on youtube that explain it better:

@BioCap - Interesting analysis. I was really struck how voters who, by all accounts, would never vote Tory - & didn’t, in former exigencies - switched in the last election. The polls since then have been consistent.
In democratic terms, we have to accept that other voters, presumably like ourselves, are capable of determining their best interests. We’re not automatons, of course. It just seems like a curious turn.

I love how Desmond Morris is considered a “modern” proponent, when his most popular book is like 50 years old. Dawkins doesn’t talk much about human emotions and evolution, though there certainly are modern evo psychologists who do.

Would he be modern in the sense that we’re pomo? Or post-pomo (I can’t keep up, if you can tell)?
