In the 18th century, India’s share of the world economy was as large as Europe’s. By 1947, after two centuries of British rule, it had decreased sixfold. The empire blew rebels from cannon, massacred unarmed protesters, entrenched institutionalised racism and caused millions to die from starvation.
British imperialism justified itself as enlightened despotism for the benefit of the governed, but Shashi Tharoor demolishes this position, demonstrating how every supposed imperial ‘gift’ - from the railways to the rule of law - was designed in Britain’s interests alone. He goes on to show how Britain’s Industrial Revolution was founded on India’s deindustrialisation and the destruction of its textile industry.
In this bold and incisive reassessment of colonialism, Tharoor exposes to devastating effect the inglorious reality of Britain’s stained Indian legacy.

To paraphrase W.B. Yeats - Truth and justice come dropping slow. Thanks enigma, the British have never accepted the truly horrifying nature of their oppressive imperialism. There are even attempts among “historians” to revise and distort the historical record. This effort is comparable to the manner in which many Japanese refuse to acknowledge the decimation and torture they inflicted on the Chinese and Korean people, among many others.

A brilliant book.
Unfortunately, very few among the British ever had the intellectual capacity to realize the horrors they inflicted on the rest of humankind for centuries.
The present treatment of “windrush” generation speaks volume of their apathy.

I am British and a fully aware that as a nation we have historicaly been desperately lacking in our past history, and what damage colonialism has wrought upon nations such as India and Africa amongst others, but do not attempt to put ALL british in one pot, the majority of us brits are realy civilized and caring, but if you want to “have a go” knock yourself out.
ps most of today`s generation have not heard the term “windrush until a couple of weeks ago !!!! please take care not to fall off your soapbox.

No offence intended to all British people, terry.
The Tories, and conservative historians, do tend to have a very rose-tinted perspective on the imperial past, however. Every nation should try to take an unedited approach to history. Peace.

I love it when British Nationalists bring up the railroads.
