Resident trans person here. I can assure you that coronavirus has not made me no longer trans. If anything, it’s made dysphoria worse and it gave me more time to focus on further steps in transition. I’m not into book banning, but I hope anyone thinking about reading this will go into it knowing that trans-hating “feminists” have become nearly inseparable from misogynist evangelicals and use pretty much the same arguments. And they use rampant misogyny in order to attack trans people, not realizing the irony. A few examples are right here in the comments, such as equating lesbians with “wanting to be men” and claiming girls and women are so fragile and gullible that being around their friends in person is enough to make them risk the social and other repercussions of coming out as trans and changing their entire lives to “want to be a man.”

One of my hobbies is reading the comments on these controversial books and coming back and rereading them after listening to the text. This one was a treat. Normally I don’t review the book, but I think I should today.
The fact - the rate of f-to-m transitions has multiplied by over 4 times in the last decade. This book contends that this is caused by a social contagion similar to anorexia.
The evidence is that these transitions cluster in teenaged and young 20-something girls, friend groups, and among lonely, socially awkward, and perhaps autistic girls rather than being peppered more randomly thoughout the population the way m-to-f transitions seem to occur.
Exploring this evidence, Shrier engages in mind-reading. A pet peeve of mine. For exapmple: assigning intentions to the youtube influencers who talk about their transitions and give advice on how they have overcome obstacles before them or would do so now knowing more.
The big takeaway from the book, is that there is a game theory aspect in how someone can get on hormones or surgery, circumvent family and therapist, and that people - school faculty and lawmakers - who want to be anti-bullying contribute. (All while using the bullying bludgeon that your child is going to commit suicide if you don’t affirm.)
The blurb statement that “experts are over-relied upon” was a big red flag for me. It proved slightly inaccurate. Her argument seems to be that credentials are respected not actual expertise. And she relies on her own experts while calling out others.
I do tend to agree with Shrier, for example lesbians are not simply women “who want to be men.” And saying that tomboyish, lesbian tendencies, or favoring so-called “boy” activities is indicative of someone not being a girl or a woman, strikes me as deeply homophobic and misogynistic.
I don’t know about all of her conclusions, sources, or ideas, but the book seems to be a worthwhile read especially if you haven’t yet engaged with the arguments form Shrier’s point-of-view before.

Detransitioned, former transguy here.
I had hormones, name legal change, and breasts removed before coming back to reality.
Social contagion is real. Ideological indoctrination is real. Media glorification of transness is real. The desire to be special and explain why we “feel different” is real. These factors are leading to an epidemic of people “identifying” as trans who are definitely NOT trans and should not be encouraged in their “identity.”
(Factors are very very similar to “pro-ana / pro-mia” craze of validating eating disorders. The symptoms are very similar too.)
My trans friends agree and are worried. Trans people even have a name for this. They call these types of girls “trans-trenders.”
Trans people DO know that this is happening. It’s called transtrending. They have a word for it, it’s real. But the activist wing (note: NOT all trans people are extreme activists!!!) doesn’t want to examine the implications of what this means for the women and girls who are damaged by this mind contagion.

What crap gender dysphoria is not something you make up. Either you are or not and I have NEVER met a person after Trans that wasn’t happier. They won’t go through all that effort if there wasn’t a real need for it.

4 years later, i remembered this book after spending 2 hours+ speaking to a dear friend of mine FtM crying because he is going back in the Closet after being told he would no longer be addressed to by male pronounce, he have lived as a man for 6 years (not changed legally) and have thrived and recovered from depression paying of most of his credit card debt and had his student debt Canceled.
Yesterday his work announced that Rationality would be returning to the workplace, (he is the only Trans ore LGBTQ person in the workplace.) Work and Gender Ideology would be “ripped out by it’s roots”.
he was given the option to either stop being addressed as a man or quit, he do not have the option to quit.
You who read this book and believed it, I hate you all… my friend did not deserve this.

It’s 13h in total, so it’s pretty much like an audiobook of its own, only it’s available for free. If you care about “debate” and “critical thinking”, I recommend taking into account more opinions and criticism by listening to these videos with an open heart and mind.
