All three components matter, namely (i) Ray Bradbury’s position, in essence “be vigilant, resist” (ii) Alastair Reynolds’s position, in essence “be trusting, obey”, and (iii) the unfortunate backdrop of you know what. But understandable, as arbitrarily excluding two key elements out of three can make it easier to argue against the remaining one.

At close inspection those blog entries appear to be anything but “innocuous” — in essence, the public figure in question publicly endorses “COVID vaccination and boosterization”, by implication taking the side of those in power pushing it down everybody’s throat by any means necessary.
The “glare that obscures” here would be public health considerations, blown out of proportion, all that hysteria and madness surrounding it, and “the glow that illuminates” may reveal the insane opportunistic power grab behind the COVID decorations, likely without intention of relinquishing it any time soon.

Back to “Ray Bradbury vs. Alastair Reynolds”, speaking of principled civic positions and lack thereof — perhaps the following “Cats vs. Dogs” analogy might help.
If you toss a pebble at cat, the cat will look at the pebble. However, if you toss a pebble at dog, the dog will look at *you*.
Under that angle, figuratively speaking, what we observe these days is (i) spineless cats, twisting themselves into pretzels, doing whatever it takes to avoid unpleasantness of pebbles, plus fear of stepping out of line and being hissed at by fellow cats, and (ii) clearly thinking dogs, not much caring about pebbles and considering biting the offender instead, to discourage him from further transgressions. Naturally, the offender goes out of his way to assure “it’s all pebbles and not me” and “only mandatory antipebble injections will save us all”, but as time passes and pebbles keep flying, the eerie growl is getting noticeably louder.
There was a sci-fi movie back in the day, a guy seeking employment in a big city found a box full of special sunglasses by accident, he tried a pair and suddenly the true nature of things was revealed to him, he saw the world around full of alien monsters, pulling strings, manipulating unsuspecting humans etc. Perhaps it did not occur to the enlightened progressives at the time, that two can play this game.
