From the author of Why Americans Hate Politics, the New York Times bestselling and “notably fair-minded” (The New York Times Book Review), story of the GOP’s fracturing—from the 1964 Goldwater takeover to the Trump spectacle.
Why the Right Went Wrong offers an “up to the moment” (The Christian Science Monitor) historical view of the right since the 1960s. Its core contention is that American conservatism and the Republican Party took a wrong turn when they adopted Barry Goldwater’s worldview during and after the 1964 campaign. The radicalism of today’s conservatism is not the product of the Tea Party, Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne writes. The Tea Partiers are the true heirs to Goldwater ideology. The purity movement did more than drive moderates out of the Republican Party—it beat back alternative definitions of conservatism.
Since 1968, no conservative administration—not Nixon not Reagan not two Bushes—could live up to the rhetoric rooted in the Goldwater movement that began to reshape American politics fifty years ago. The collapse of the Nixon presidency led to the rise of Ronald Reagan, the defeat of George H.W. Bush, to Newt Gingrich’s revolution. Bush initially undertook a partial modernization, preaching “compassionate conservatism” and a “Fourth Way” to Clinton’s “Third Way.” Conservatives quickly defined him as an advocate of “big government” and not conservative enough on spending, immigration, education, and Medicare. A return to the true faith was the only prescription on order. The result was the Tea Party, which Dionne says, was as much a reaction to Bush as to Obama.
The state of the Republican party, controlled by the strictest base, is diminished, Dionne writes. It has become white and older in a country that is no longer that. It needs to come back to life for its own health and that of the country’s, and in Why the Right Went Wrong, Dionne “expertly delineates where we are and how we got there” (Chicago Tribune)—and how to return.

Interesting analysis, but aren’t the demographics actually moving in the direction of an increased elderly population, as opposed to the contention of the book? Across the western world? Doesn’t that potentially expand their voter base? If the Republicans are disappearing, why then did they win both houses and the Presidency (as well as holding over two thirds of gubernatorial offices)? The Supreme Court is also likely to be “Republican” for the foreseeable future.
Both parties seem to have dubious and appalling elements and histories, I’m not sure what we can conclude from that.
Probably the presence of contention within the party is a sign of vibrancy.
All of these pundits are consistently and prematurely deriving too much significance from the Trump election/Presidency. It’s too early for their ominous conclusions. If anything, it’s likely to be an anomaly, then it will be back to business as usual - deadlock; stalemate; sclerosis.
Aren’t these authors merely highfalutin
storytellers and profiteering prognosticators?
Thanks jean-paul!

I love the way this book attempts to make the conservative right seem outdated and irrelevant in the US today.
Reading this book, you would be forgiven for assuming hillary clinton won the last election and the dems are still in power.
Good to see the far left still living within their own self induced psychosis!

Generation Z is even more conservative. Plus liberals and gender non-binaries don’t procreate well - not to mention they abort their own. So, get ready for decades of traditional conservative values and voters!

All of the following points are based on actual polls from Pew and others. The key thing to take away about Generation Z is that they are more independent rather than more likely to associate with either major party. They are more anti-Trump than previous generations, which is very important to note.
Generation Z definitely isn’t more socially conservative and is more likely to accept gender fluidity than previous generations.
Many claim to support socialism, but a vast number don’t actually understand what socialism actually means. Compared to other generations, a greater percentage of Generation Z believe that government should do more to solve problems.
