In the past five years, Israel has mounted three major assaults on the 1.8 million Palestinians trapped behind its blockade of the Gaza Strip. Taken together, Operation Cast Lead (2008-9), Operation Pillar of Defense (2012), and Operation Protective Edge (2014) have resulted in the deaths of some 3,700 Palestinians. Meanwhile a total of 90 Israelis were killed in the invasions. On the face of it, this succession of vastly disproportionate attacks has often seemed frenzied and pathological. Senior Israeli politicians have not discouraged such perceptions; indeed, they have actively encouraged them. After the 2008-9 assault, Israel’s then-foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, boasted, “Israel demonstrated real hooliganism during the course of the recent operation, which I demanded.” However, as Norman G. Finkelstein sets out in this concise, paradigm-shifting new book, a closer examination of Israel’s motives reveals a state whose repeated recourse to savage war is far from irrational. Rather, Israel’s attacks have been designed to sabotage the possibility of a peace compromise with the Palestinians, even on terms that are favorable to it. Looking also at machinations around the 2009 UN-sponsored Goldstone report and Turkey’s forlorn attempt to seek redress in the UN for the killing of its citizens in the 2010 attack on the Gaza freedom flotilla, Finkelstein documents how Israel has repeatedly eluded accountability for what are now widely recognized as war crimes. Further, he shows that, though neither side can claim clear victory in these conflicts, the ensuing stalemate remains much more tolerable for Israelis than for the beleaguered citizens of Gaza. A strategy of mass nonviolent protest might, he contends, hold more promise for a Palestinian victory than military resistance, however brave.

first as always thank you to the uploader. no matter what I may think of the book personally I’m thankful for the work it takes to upload these books. Now this book seems to miss most major points about moral equivalency of the actions of the people involved. One must not confuse the average Palestinian who has no access to non propaganda media and therefore don’t know any better and their leaders who have condemned then to misery and squalor by their evil actions. I do not believe most Palestinians are evil but most of their leaders are and that’s the main reason we still can’t have peace.israel isn’t perfect and has made some serious mistakes but there is no moral equivalency between a people who sometimes get to overzealous in defending themselves and the Palestinian leaders who intentionally funnel aid money to weapons,who use their own people as human shields,who intentionally mislead their people,who intentionally target civilians with terror weapons etc. Its a sad situation and it seems every time Israel makes a concession some faction in Palestine sabotages the peace with an attack. One reason is just blind hatred and racism,not all of it but a large part but also greed.The Palestinian leadership rakes in and embezzled millions from aid and charity and even from donations by terror regimes that should be used to promote more terror. Arafat died with hundreds of millions in his foreign bank accounts…all the while his people lived in tents and bombed out rubble. that is true evil.

WhiteKnight, your obvious distaste for the Palestinian leadership but not Palestinians themselves is how many of us feel about Israel’s leadership. Yet if people of the left are to describe such sentiments they often are called anti-Semitic. From the outside it looks like far too many hot heads on both sides. Good luck finding a peaceful lasting outcome, but my money will be better spent betting on red on the roulette wheel …

i could’t finish this book. it is the most racist thing i read this week. portraying the palestinians as imbecils, good natured, poor gentel souls who are not to blame for the situation is racist. the arabs aree no “noble savages” who are wronged by the imperialists. the point in time this book chooses to “show” is the problem. a decade before 1,700 died in a mounting surge of terror by the palestinians. the wave of terror began days after P.M/ Barak offered evrything to arafat. israeli soldiers died because the army tried it’s best not to hurt civilians and arab terrorists attacked from these civilian places. so laying blame on israel is formost racist against the poor arabs. (go to google and see what they made from the places israel evicted in gaza, that what they do. destroy and not build. it’s their call)

From the first days of its existence Israel was under attack of the neighboring Muslim countries that refuse to acknowledge even its right to existence. Despite wars and terrorist attacks (initiated by the other parties) it has prospered. Israel is not squeaky clean, and some of its actions deserve condemnation. But for the country surrounded by enemies and terrorists Israel shows itself as a model of tolerance. I totally agree with previous comments that Palestinian leaders use their own people as a fodder to sustain their power on the anti-semitic agenda. Trump did one thing right - moved the American embassy to Jerusalem.

The description sounds like a heavily biased load of lies. Hamas, is an acknowledged terrorist organization and it RULES Gaza. Palestinians are being paid to attack Israelis, there’s an actual price list for various types of attacks. The Israelis are defending themselves, and the only way to effectively defend is to attack. If they really were interested in wholesale slaughter, do you think they would have kept the casualties to such low numbers, with the overwhelming majority of the casualties being militants from hamas? This isn’t even about left and right (unless you actually want to look at the Israeli politicians), this is about a huge city being ruled by an organization as horrible as ISIS, but since they oppose Israel primarily, it is the duty of all the “progressive” people to condemn the Israelis, no matter what the facts are. It isn’t antisemitic, it’s anti-Israeli. Anti Israelism has been founded by the soviet regime as a means of getting the way of the only West-oriented country in the ME, and has been picked up by the soviet and then socialist-leftist propaganda machine.
