Does allowing people to own or carry guns deter violent crime? Or does it simply cause more citizens to harm each other? Directly challenging common perceptions about gun control, legal scholar John Lott presents the most rigorously comprehensive data analysis ever done on crime statistics and right-to-carry laws. This timely and provocative work comes to the startling conclusion: more guns mean less crime. In this paperback edition, Lott has expanded the research through 1996, incorporating new data available from states that passed right-to-carry and other gun laws since the book’s publication as well as new city-level statistics.
“Lott’s pro-gun argument has to be examined on the merits, and its chief merit is lots of data…If you still disagree with Lott, at least you will know what will be required to rebut a case that looks pretty near bulletproof.”—Peter Coy, Business Week
“By providing strong empirical evidence that yet another liberal policy is a cause of the very evil it purports to cure, he has permanently changed the terms of debate on gun control…Lott’s book could hardly be more timely… A model of the meticulous application of economics and statistics to law and policy.”—John O. McGinnis, National Review
“His empirical analysis sets a standard that will be difficult to match… This has got to be the most extensive empirical study of crime deterrence that has been done to date.”—Public Choice
“For anyone with an open mind on either side of this subject this book will provide a thorough grounding. It is also likely to be the standard reference on the subject for years to come.”—Stan Liebowitz, Dallas Morning News
“A compelling book with enough hard evidence that even politicians may have to stop and pay attention. More Guns, Less Crime is an exhaustive analysis of the effect of gun possession on crime rates.”—James Bovard, Wall Street Journal
“John Lott documents how far ‘politically correct’ vested interests are willing to go to denigrate anyone who dares disagree with them. Lott has done us all a service by his thorough, thoughtful, scholarly approach to a highly controversial issue.”—Milton Friedman

I dunno, a climate of more guns & even more powerful guns, meaning more guns for criminals & people with mental health problems; entailing more fearful people securing more guns. The most vicious of cycles…

So true. One never hears how many people save their lives, and their family’s, with the use of a gun. The 2nd Amendment is their so that citizens can protect themselves form a Tyrannical Govt. and from harm from criminals wanting to hurt or kill them. It’s that simple.

Typical comments from left wing half witts who can’t handle documented facts from their own DOJ and FBI etc.
The great thing is The US was built with guess what, GUNS! The loosers you worship, Obama and now Slow Joe have been the greatest gun salesmen in the history of the United States. Folks and now even left wingers are buying guns as fast as mfg can produce them. There are close to 600 million firearms in the US, all protected by that pesky 2nd amendment the SC just reinforced and there is not a single thing you can do about it. On second thought you and your friends can try to take them, can’t wait to see that!

I’ll tell you what, when you’re spelling “half·wits” incorrectly, you’re clearly off to a damn fine start. Indeed, you’re very possibly beyond criticism and/or argument.
Thanks, as ever, to rmoor for all the books.

Great comeback caesar963, you really put me in my place! Since you can only comment on my spelling I can only conclude you can’t dispute the facts. As the Beatles would say “Happiness Is a Warm Gun”.

I don’t know if it’s still the case, but I believe at one time Switzerland required all males to own a gun and be trained in how to use it. Don’t recall hearing of any historical mass shootings in that country.
What I’m trying to say is that it’s not so much widespread ownership of guns but the culture and attitude of the people in general. If the Japanese people had widespread gun ownership I doubt there would be a steep increase in gun related crime. Why? Because they are mostly an homogenous culture. The people are taught to have and show respect for each other.
I feel it would be interesting to read of watch a story where all guns in America, and the rest of the world, suddenly no longer function. This would include any long range weapons such as artillery, missiles etc.
Theft related crime would increase until authorities armed themselves with cross bows etc. Perhaps there already is such a novel. Anyone know?
Thank.

“all males”
That should have said, “all males being of sound mind and body and having reached the age of maturity (whatever it was or is) and without criminal records”.
I’m sure many females would now regard that as sexist and also believe the “sound mind” part would rule out most men.

Counter intuitive, what twisted reality does the author inhabit to believe this premise?, or is it silliness to sell books?

@bear - That’s peculiar, I was just talking abt the White Album with the noble erouting. All the Sexy Sadie uploads being posted.
I think Lennon in the Warm Gun song was punning on his tumescent member, rather than the thing which makes you most tumid (and no, that doesn’t mean “warm & wet”). He didn’t intend “Happiness is a Cold Bullet-Ridden corpse” or anything like that.
I’m guessing you mean “facts” rather facts.
@Acanthrohu - Chris Rock suggested making bullets nigh-on unaffordable as a poss solution.

American Gun Facts
A Factual Look at Guns in America
americangunfacts.com
44% of U.S. households own a gun
393 million guns owned by US citizens
57% felons more afraid of armed citizen than cop
Guns Used in Self Defense
25.3 million Americans (31% of gun owners) have used a gun in self defense. In nearly 82% of these cases, the gun was never fired.
According to the National Research Council study done during Obama’s presidency, guns are used for self defense between:
500,000 to 3 million times every year
(1,369 to 8,219 times every day)
Because many cases of self defense are not reported to the police, the real number may be on the higher end. Guns used in self defense stats often try to measure the duck that didn’t quack. In other words, there may not be a police report or any other record when no crime was committed or reported. Most of the time a gun is used to prevent a crime, there is no record. As a result, data on defensive use of force and averted crimes due to the presence of a defensive gun are controversial, contentious, and range widely. Defensive gun use (DGU) statistics generally rely on self-reporting, interviews, police, and media reports which are then extrapolated to the national population using a variety of statistical methods which produce contradictory and often wildly inconsistent estimates.

Now return to gun nuts explaining why anyone having the ability to commit murder on an impulse is actually a good thing.
Interesting to note that the GOP enacted a law, the Dickey Amendment, to prevent the US federal government researching gun violence, so it could not contradict the narrative presented by assholes like Lott.
August 15th, 2022
I’m surprised that nobody has castigated me for my previous comments where I mentioned “sound body”. My goof. Of course a person with a disability would have been permitted to own a gun in Switzerland in the past or now I suspect.

The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.
● Wayne LaPierre, NRA
Presenting arguments in favor of sensible gun policies and writing a book about it does not make one an asshole, while baselessly calling such individuals names does.
“For more than 20 years, Congress has deterred federal funding for gun violence research by including a provision known as the Dickey Amendment in annual appropriations legislation. The provision prohibits the use of federal funds to advocate or promote gun control.”
Which, incidentally, was the right thing to do, i.e., to prohibit the Federal Behemoth the use of federal funds to advocate or promote gun control.
August 15th, 2022
“Presenting arguments in favor of sensible gun policies and writing a book about it does not make one an asshole,”
If he had been talking aout “sensible gun policies” instead of advocating for “More Guns” which directly leads to tens if thousands of deaths a year. He is advocating for more murder, thus he is an asshole. A monstrous asshole.
“to prohibit the Federal Behemoth the use of federal funds to advocate or promote gun control.” The ban was on research, not advocacy. But they knew that any facts would embarrass them.
These days the GOP isn’t embarrassed by barefaced lies, so no need to worry.

@alnilam - How many “good guys with a gun” have actually been on the spot to stop the “bad guys with a gun”? I imagine it would be very few if you exclude law enforcement officers. The odds that a civilian “good guy”, with the skills of Jack Reacher, would be at the same location as said “bad guy” are astronomical.
Maybe the government should give out guns freely to every citizen, train every child in the proper use of weapons, and require that ALL citizen’s carry a loaded gun at all times. And they must also have to undergo brainwashing courses in order to ensure they would not hesitate to use their weapon if the need arose.
Okay everyone, I’m going to order my Kevlar full body armor right now. And buy shares in the gun and Kevlar manufacturing industry.
August 18th, 2022
@alnilam - How many armed to the teeth “good guys” were on hand at Uvalde but just stood around while a crazy gun nut killed so many innocent children.
August 19th, 2022
The “good guys with guns” did stop the bad guy at Uvalde. After he had killed 19 children.
Most of these mass killers want to be killed, so there is no deterrent possible.
Other times when “good guys” have taken on bad guys, the cops turn up and see a guy with a gun standing over a body, and kill him. Just imagine the NRA wet dream of everyone packing a gun, then what happens in a crowded mall when a firefight starts. How many bystanders and good guys get killed by “friendly fire” from woud be vigilantes? And again, how many get killed when the cops show up. Or they see black guy running for cover.
It’s all completely insane pandering to paranoid hateful losers.
