On Fire - Naomi Klein
For more than twenty years, Naomi Klein has been the foremost chronicler of the economic war waged on both people and planet—and an unapologetic champion of a sweeping environmental agenda with justice at its center. In lucid, elegant dispatches from the frontlines of contemporary natural disaster, she pens surging, indispensable essays for a wide public: prescient advisories and dire warnings of what future awaits us if we refuse to act, as well as hopeful glimpses of a far better future. On Fire: The (Burning) Case for a Green New Deal gathers for the first time more than a decade of her impassioned writing, and pairs it with new material on the staggeringly high stakes of our immediate political and economic choices.
These long-form essays show Klein at her most prophetic and philosophical, investigating the climate crisis not only as a profound political challenge but as a spiritual and imaginative one, as well. Delving into topics ranging from the clash between ecological time and our culture of “perpetual now,” to the soaring history of humans changing and evolving rapidly in the face of grave threats, to rising white supremacy and fortressed borders as a form of “climate barbarism,” this is a rousing call to action for a planet on the brink.
With reports spanning from the ghostly Great Barrier Reef, to the annual smoke-choked skies of the Pacific Northwest, to post-hurricane Puerto Rico, to a Vatican attempting an unprecedented “ecological conversion,” Klein makes the case that we will rise to the existential challenge of climate change only if we are willing to transform the systems that produced this crisis.
An expansive, far-ranging exploration that sees the battle for a greener world as indistinguishable from the fight for our lives, On Fire captures the burning urgency of the climate crisis, as well as the fiery energy of a rising political movement demanding a catalytic Green New Deal.

So sad. It is a global ponzi scheme targeting the West to redistribute wealth and bankrupt her. A little research disproves fear mongering pseudoscience.

So sad. An uninformed deplorable determined to deny scientific consensus on an issue that should be apolitical. Your “little research” is just that, a microscopic view that looks only for confirmation of a misguided belief.

ghiaurov, the scientific consensus is a cherry-picked one. There is a 9 out of 10 consensus that Climate change is even marginally the fault of man. Unfortunately the other 73 people in the original study were not counted. Guess what their opinion was?
Thanks for the book, Ill give it a listen.

I’d give us a 50/50 chance of survival.
But there’s only a 10% chance of that.

I confess myself intrigued about the “white supremacy” angle to the climate change crisis. I’m enraged that this central, pivotal aspect has received so little serious attention up to this point. In Europe, we don’t seem to colour-code our climate crises in the same satirical manner. A grave lapse.

Neurall - The argument that there is no consensus on climate change is a myth. https://www.climatechangecommunication.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/06/Cook_2019_climate_misinformation-1.pdf

I don’t know where you get the “consensus” you claim, but it’s unlikely from anyone marginally qualified to decide what constitutes a scientific consensus.

It went from ‘global warming” to “climate change”. The first catch phrase didn’t stick. They are now trying this one. If it gets hot its climate change. If it gets cold, its climate change. A no lose phrase.
Anyone remember Climategate?

Damn you humans! Only 10,000 to 13,000 years ago, you just started using fire to cook your food and warm your caves. Hell, you wouldn’t even have a written language for several millenia. But what did you go an do, you managed to melt more than 90% of the glacial ice that covered the northern hemisphere in just a few thousand years.
It’s about time you got around to finishing the job though you lazy bastards.

Something is funny when the campaigners of climate change keep buying waterfront homes. Gore, Obama.
(Obama’s new home on Martha’s Vineyard - those are his people).

Deniers - you’ll watch your loved ones & country die of AGW consequences along with the rest of us. I knew we were a Mega-Cancer in overshoot long ago & wisely avoided breeding. The laws of physics do not care about your primitive tribal & supernatural beliefs. Those same laws are why a “green” new deal is not possible even if all 7.7 billion chimps were onboard. GND is Progressive denial of science (but they mean well).

“This is the story of the two most important things that enabled the success and possible demise of humans: energy and denial.”

I’m just mad for Korean celebrities. Which one do you think has the most aegyo?
January 9th, 2020
If I had to choose, which I hate so to do, it would be a sweaty toss-up betwixt Kim Se-jeong and Jung Chae-yeon. K-pop is the only pop in my considered estimation. You can keep your Bouncy Knowles and your Gary Glitter.
January 9th, 2020
Hehe I wish I had your refined palette @Caesar. I imprinted on the first Korean’s I saw. Those being Jang Na-ra and SNSD’s Yoona *somewhere in the distance you hear the Mortal Kombat man say Fatality,.. Flawless Victory!
January 9th, 2020
I dodged a bullet there, because if I had imprinted upon the first Korean I had consciously seen, it probably would’ve been Kim Il-sung (the great, good, dear leader & Mighty, Supreme Commander of Earth’s meagre forces).
(Does my vintage look big in this?!)

@Saconi - nailed it.

We must stop the Jews from changing the weather!!! :)
January 10th, 2020
Dodged a bullet? Nay I say. Mayhap been willing taken one though after that sensitive Hyung showed you the final stage of Kpop and kidnapped a genuine Trot music (Daniel O’Donnell for celestial beings) star like Hong Jin Young for you?
January 10th, 2020
All the Stars are coming out to shine now (to be shore, to be shore) - Daniel O’Donnell?! Are you similarly stricken with Stage IV Irishness? That monster should be tried at The Hague for Crimes Against Ears. My people (and the Koreans) have suffered enough throughout our long, lachrymose history.

Hehe *waves from Dublin’s sunny North side. We can always recognise our own :)

Our people, then! Here in Drumcondra the traitorous “sun” is five feet high and risin’.
Yeah, that would explain your twisted sense of humour alright.

Lol my All Hallows edgamucation [sic] must have allowed me to snuff out a true saint and scholar such as yourself. Now what can we do about extending the Tolka wall up past Thunders to keep back the flood of illegals outside Scribbles newsagents?

Y’know, the bould Bertie must surely be looking for some more lucrative consultancy work, now that he’s solved every other ‘burning’ global issue. Get that man a flaming sinecure! Just keep the Kryptonite away from his august personage.
January 13th, 2020
Huzzah Bertie had all I needed. People knew I meant business when they saw me ranting on my wall of tiny calendars. They even rewarded my public service of being exclusive with a hotel break. Someone mentioned something about being sectioned? I think it has to do with this part of the hotel being staffed fully by doctors and nurses. Exclusive right!

We’ll not see his like again (fingers & toes crossed). He once voiced his concern that some “loo-lah” might take a crack at him. The fiendish twist was that he himself was the actual, 24 karat loo-lah. Like Baldrick owning the bullet with his name on it, in order to prevent himself becoming a victim of said bullet.

Climate Blame Jokes
-CO2=Y2Kx1984
-We must tax volcanoes to save the Dead Sea?
-How many climate blame scientists does it take to change a light bulb?
None, but they do have full consensus that it “could” change.
-GREENS are too YELLOW to admit they are RED.
-GREENS are too YELLOW to admit they got caught RED handed exaggerating vague climate science to make some GREEN.
-Climate Change love is never having to say; “proven” or “100% certain” even for the end of the world.
-Climate Change’s middle name is Y2K.
-Climate blame scientists who agree we “could” need to SAVE THE PLANET are now also 99% only certain that smoking “could” cause cancer and the planet “might” not be flat.
-Climate blame “believers” look like the last guy ever, to show up to the party still wearing disco pants and carrying a bag phone.
-We deniers trust that scientists are smart enough to know when to SAY * AGREE that their own 34 year old CO2 Armageddon is as real as they say “smoking causes cancer” before it’s too late to say it.
-CO2 science wasn’t fraudulent science, it was; “flatulent” science.
-Climate change scientists are now also only 99% certain cancer causes smoking.
-Due to climate change’s polar ice expansion, Canada’s Justin Trudeau now says that a Carbon Tax will pay for more icebreakers.
-This just in; Liberal climate blame “Believer” refuses to issue driver’s license to conservative climate blame denier.
-Obomber has accepted an offer from ISIS to provide us with a nuclear winter to help reverse the effects of unstoppable warming of the planet Earth.
-Science now says climate blame will only kill conservatives and their families. Peace, love…..
-Scientists now say that millions of wind turbines could send the planet out of orbit.
-What’s another word for “climate change denier”?
Evolved?
-Why did the climate blame “believer” cross the road?
Because everyone else was.
-We must please the angry weather gods by sacrificing our
fires?
-What do you call a Liberal Election Promise?; Promising to make the weather nicer but colder by taxing the air we breathe with bankster funded and corporate run carbon trading stock markets ruled by trust worthy liberal politicians.
