An essential primer on capitalism, politics and how the world works, based on the hugely popular undergraduate lecture series ‘What Is Politics?’
Is there an alternative to capitalism? In this landmark text, Chomsky and Waterstone chart a critical map for a more just and sustainable society.
COVID-19 has revealed glaring failures and monstrous brutalities in the current capitalist system. It represents both a crisis and an opportunity. Everything depends on the actions that people take into their own hands.
How does politics shape our world, our lives and our perceptions? How much of ‘common sense’ is actually driven by the ruling classes’ needs and interests? And how are we to challenge the capitalist structures that now threaten all life on the planet?
Consequences of Capitalism exposes the deep, often unseen connections between neoliberal ‘common sense’ and structural power. In making these linkages, we see how the current hegemony keeps social justice movements divided and marginalised. And, most importantly, we see how we can fight to overcome these divisions.

Are you resisting this topic because it stirs discontent within you?

“Consequences of Capitalism”?? You have got to be kidding!
I fled from a “socialist paradise” to come here. Socialism is only a “paradise” for the Rulers and Oligarchs who control every facet of a person’s life. Been there, done that. No thanks!
Freedom, prosperity, innovation, and progress is what Capitalism delivers.
In capitalist economies, people have strong incentives to work hard, increase efficiency, and produce superior products. Look at history.

Capitalist disciples triggered bigly. Snowflakes!
“How do you cause people to believe in an imagined order such as Christianity, democracy or capitalism? First, you never admit that the order is imagined.”
― Yuval Noah Harari, Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind
As for the environmental damage, which is worse than Chomper realizes, that’s on the humans & they can’t help it.
“The destruction of the natural world is not the result of global capitalism, industrialisation, ‘Western civilisation’ or any flaw in human institutions. It is a consequence of the evolutionary success of an exceptionally rapacious primate. Throughout all of history and prehistory, human advance has coincided with ecological devastation.”
― John Gray, Straw Dogs: Thoughts On Humans And Other Animals
“The romantic contrast between modern industry that “destroys nature” and our ancestors who “lived in harmony with nature” is groundless. Long before the Industrial Revolution, Homo sapiens held the record among all organisms for driving the most plant and animal species to their extinctions. We have the dubious distinction of being the deadliest species in the annals of life.”
― Yuval Noah Harari, From Animals into Gods: A Brief History of Humankind

Well said apollo60.
Chomsky needs to actually live under a socialist regime before he can make any informed observations. Taking a weeks holiday somewhere does not allow someone to actually see how things really work.

Lol, apollo60, we all know that “I fled a socialist regime” means “my daddy had a factory”

I grew up in a totalitarian society and I can see when I am being controlled. Living in a so-called First World, advanced capitalistic, “democratic” society has opened my eyes. There is no freedom, only brainwashing the sheeple everywhere in the world. Only your loved ones, community, family bring joy. Any system that comes between you and your community is evil. Thatcherite Neoliberal Capitalism is one such system as it makes you selfish and greedy.

lol apollo60, you actually described capitalism.

Thanks!
I disagree with Chomsky’s “lesser of two evils” voting strategy, but his critique of the U.S. “corporate-plutocracy” and mainstream media is a “bullseye”
Great book.

Chomsky has been documenting the ravages of capitalism and the deep effects its propaganda machine for almost a century. The frothing pigs in the comments are proof of what indoctrination can do to a mind.

Thank you uploader. It is clear that many complainers here have not really read or listened to the author and his criticism of Lininsm, Stalinism or other totalitarianisms, including right-wing ones.
