A Nobel prize winner challenges us to throw off the free market fundamentalists and reclaim our economy.
We all have the sense that the American economy - and its government - tilts toward big business, but as Joseph E. Stiglitz explains in his new book, People, Power, and Profits, the situation is dire. A few corporations have come to dominate entire sectors of the economy, contributing to skyrocketing inequality and slow growth. This is how the financial industry has managed to write its own regulations, tech companies have accumulated reams of personal data with little oversight, and our government has negotiated trade deals that fail to represent the best interests of workers. Too many have made their wealth through exploitation of others rather than through wealth creation. If something isn’t done, new technologies may make matters worse, increasing inequality and unemployment.
Stiglitz identifies the true sources of wealth and of increases in standards of living, based on learning, advances in science and technology, and the rule of law. He shows that the assault on the judiciary, universities, and the media undermines the very institutions that have long been the foundation of America’s economic might and its democracy.

A Nobel prize? That’s dynamite!
It’s not just those freedom-hating, liberty-loathing, free market-loving Americans - even Chinese communist rulers believe that to get rich is glorious. But they don’t mean that all communists can be allowed to get rich, of course - only the “more equal than others” caucus. So everyone is obsessed with filthy lucre!
There was no exploitation before those nefarious Yankee dogs appeared on the world stage. Or so I’m reliably informed.
Don’t sheeple voluntarily, and routinely, surrender their most intimate data (not just the appropriately-named Anthony Weiner kinda data)? Must individuals be rescued from their own free volition?

@caesar963 rant on. “Nothing is stronger than an idea whose time has come.”

But the idea’s time has come & gone, can’t you see the evidence of the 20th Century? Behind the mountains of corpses? Nothing is scarier than an idea which results in so much suffering (copyright, Caesar).
Rant?! How scathing!

Reclaim our economy? Throw off the free market? Typical Communist rhetoric! A free market is the only realistic inoculation against inequality and unemployment. As long as a self-appointed elite class controls the economy, they control the populace. And since when has that responsibility fallen into the lap of the news media? As important as critical journalism is, it is not, and never has been, a law unto itself. Not even America’s founders would have suggested such an absurdity.
Furthermore, the modern university actually plays a big factor on the part of inequality. Certainly, there are particular professions that require a learned skill set, and classical education is a valuable asset in and of itself, but a liberal arts education is not a golden ticket to fortune and fame.
True, some corporations have come to dominate entire sectors of the economy, but John Dewey’s educational system is one of them. Big pharmacy is another. Meanwhile, few even stop to consider the impact of modernism, post modernism, trans modernism, visual technology, and the upheaval of the family and traditional values. Sometimes I think the Quakers may be the only ones capable of surviving our age.
No, I’m afraid Stiglitz, no matter how intelligent he may be, misses the critical components of America’s rise to greatness, it is hard work, a healthy sense of independence and good old fashioned Christian ethics that has long been the foundation of America’s economic might and its democracy. Jefferson, Washington and Franklin knew it, and the Neo-liberals just can’t seem get it.

Pardon me, I meant, Amish may be the only ones capable of surviving our age, not Quakers.

Jiminy this is brilliant satire. Thank you for the laughs today. I really admire your way of destroying the right. Super funny 3rd paragraph. That one really got me laughing.

Jiminy. I seem to constantly find you in the comments of anybook to that seeks to challenge our modern and pravailing economic doctrines. You never seem to offer anything substantial except your predictable uneducated rabble “Socialism = communism & a free market is the only possible expression of libery.” First of all there is no such thing as a free market. To have a truly free market you’d need to get rid of the Gov since any regulation is still some regulation. Also i notice Americans seem to think a free market paradigm should extend to every part of daily life except of course their politics. In fact the political expression of the American people is arguably the most regulated amognst the rich western nations. In Britain you can essentially create a parody party ( e.g. The Monster Raving Loony Party). Federal And State law give state and federal officials extreme power in deciding whether a party is legal or not. America is essentially a two party state with those parties becoming more and more interchangable. If British, every single American President would be a Tory. 45 leaders who if taken to a different political market would be viewed as the same as one another. Remember that America is the only country where you can refer to Obama as a Socialist and not be seen as a retard. But sure. America and the free market for the win!!!!
