Even in “real countries” foundation yr in university is often spent fixing too many gratuitous errors; & introducing the young adults to fairly elementary concepts with which they ought long to have been conversant.
Whatever the reasons for your failures are, the state school systems in the US & UK have been failing their students for a long time. In 2020, under the ironically titled “No Child Left Behind” Act, 82% of America’s 100,000 public schools received failing grades.
Regardless of people’s favoured systems, there’s no excuse for getting the basics - literacy, numeracy - so catastrophically wrong.
