‘I want to live in a society where secret power is accountable to the law and to public opinion for its atrocities, where it is the war criminals who go to jail, not those who have the conscience and courage to expose them.’
It is 2008, and Stefania Maurizi, an investigative journalist with a growing interest in cryptography, starts looking into the little-known organisation WikiLeaks. Through hushed meetings, encrypted files and explosive documents, what she discovers sets her on a life-long journey that takes her deep into the realm of secret power.
Working closely with WikiLeaks’ founder Julian Assange and his organization for her newspaper, Maurizi has spent over a decade investigating state criminality protected by thick layers of secrecy, while also embarking on a solitary trench warfare to unearth the facts underpinning the cruel persecution of Assange and WikiLeaks.
With complex and disturbing insights, Maurizi’s tireless journalism exposes atrocities, the shameful treatment of Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden, on up to the present persecution of WikiLeaks: a terrifying web of impunity and cover-ups.
At the heart of the book is the brutality of secret power and the unbearable price paid by Julian Assange, WikiLeaks and truthtellers.

WikiLeaks was always an ideologically driven enterprise, whether they were aware of it at the outset or no. The collateral murder video was cut and the edited to bits. Why. Because if they didn’t gild the truth they’d have to explain how the chain of command isn’t questionable in the field, regardless of the rightness or wrongness of the act being ordered. The charges against assange were not connected, though the Americans would be fools not to capitalize on it. Also add to that Assange personal connections to Kremlin backing means immediately the impartiality of the orgs work, as has been expanded upon by multiple former WikiLeaks staff, is high suspect. Rushing so quick to maintain the edifice of an anti imperialist, ethical, objective and diligent truth telling platform while dismissing all criticisms as right wing hackery and CIA plants…it gets a bit thin oafter a while. It’s been nearly two decades since they showed up and If you’d written this book in 2010 maybe you’d have a point. But its 2023. We know who he is, we know what his organization spawned, we know their bent by their deeds and associations. Why should I be on team WikiLeaks and not just aligned to whistleblowing in general. Why should I be pro Assange rather than just pro WikiLeaks. Why are they excused from the critiques I and others would lay at the feet of any other media organization or institution. Why should I ignore the incredibly suspicious associations Assange made with RT, Snowden, corrupt South American republics with murder on their heads, oligarchs throughout Europe and a refusal to observe the legal systems of countries he’s committed crimes in whole he constantly gestures at other, greater crimes as if that is his preemptive act of penance. He raped a woman after all. Why the glut of democrat leaks in leadup to trump and nary a peep on the Republicans, despite both parties doing dirty deeds within eyesight of everybody. What conclusion am I to draw from the event that was WikiLeaks? That ultimately it was a positive impulse born of real injustice in the world, thwarted from its inception by the ego and ridiculous metric for truth of one guy, and the logical aftermath of that. Too late for apologia. This is a puff piece for a sinking ship.

@toadmanga - The rape allegation was dismissed. You are a liberal partisan with zero credibility.

There were 4 serious charges: unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation and rape.
They were not dismissed, Swedish prosecutors discontinued preliminary investigations due to their being unable to proceed while Assange remained in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. (He hid there - approaching it in disguise - after losing his appeal against a European arrest warrant. He has been found guilty of breaching the Bail Act.)
The key legal factor is that Assange waited out the Statute of Limitations for all the charges by sheltering in the embassy for almost 7 yrs, which just happens to exceed the prescribed legal time period.
Consequently, while the Swedish prosecutor retained full confidence in the charges made, Assange can no longer be prosecuted due to the convenient passage of time.

Innocent until proven guilty and charges dismissed. Believe whatever political propaganda you wish. The Banana Republics joined at the hip (UK and USA) are locking up journalists that don’t obey.

Lol I am most definitely not a liberal, as Caesar can probably attest. I am, however, not a member of the Kremlin curated left. Being critical of Assange AND the ambitions of all states would be a good thing for you to acknowledge as possible. Be an adult.

Would also love to prove those charges, if he’d show up and participate in the legal processes he cites so much.

Presumption of innocence still an operative factor in the prosecution process. Clearly, the charges ought not have been frustrated by manifestly expedient manipulation of the Statute of Limitations. Consequently, charges were never dismissed (which has an entirely different legal definition).
Criminal justice - its operations & procedures - in Sweden is not a function of “political propaganda.” However, propaganda militating against this is invalid.

Unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation and rape??
There is no end to this illusion and dystopia!
Thanks to the investigative work and perseverance of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, the truth is gradually being revealed
One of the most successful false news stories of the last decade is the story of two women who filed a rape complaint against Julian Assange with the Swedish police in August 2010, and that the founder of Wikileaks escaped from the Swedish justice system by fleeing to England. The advantage of the Swiss Nils Melzer is that he speaks fluent Swedish, and was then able to consult the original documents. And then, to his amazement, it turned out that the course of events was quite different.
Thanks to Melzer’s research, the claim that the founder of Wikileaks systematically fled Swedish justice is clearly false. According to Melzer, “it is the opposite. Mr Assange contacted the Swedish authorities on several occasions because he wanted to talk about these allegations. The authorities weighed in the balance”.
Thanks to the investigation and the perseverance of the UN special rapporteur on torture, Nils Melzer, the truth is gradually coming out: “The Swedish authorities were never interested in Assange’s testimony. They deliberately left him in the dark. But it also allowed them to control him. Imagine facing rape charges for nine and a half years by an entire state team and the media but not being able to defend yourself because the charges were never brought.”
Thanks to the research and perseverance of the UN special rapporteur on torture, Nils Melzer, the truth is gradually coming out: the two women obtained a legal representative who was “by chance” the partner of the former minister of justice, Thomas Bodström. He maintained a confidential relationship with the United States and has worked closely with the CIA. In the meantime, Assange requested permission to leave the country and even received authorization.
Assange has been indicted under the Espionage Act. It’s another shameful chapter in its sordid history from its origins, should be stricken from the books. The act has no place in a free and democratic society. We should, perhaps, not be surprised that the act is now being used to punish the exercise of journalism. Letting citizens know what is being done in their name is an unforgivable assault against the majesty of the state. The crime of the indictment under this disgraceful legislation is compounded by the years of imprisonment and torture that Julian Assange has already suffered.
The targets of the indictment, however, reach far beyond their immediate victim. They reach, in fact, to all of us who hope to understand what is happening in the world, and to the journalism profession, whose task it is to perform this essential service in a democratic order. Those who seek to perform this honorable task are under harsh attack in these troubled days. That’s more reason to assure the attack on journalism will not be joined by the most powerful state in human history.
In short, free Julian Assange, without further unconscionable delay.

@toadmanga Because exposing the murder of innocent civilians, journalists and ‘collateral’ damage in an illegal unjust war, should be presented in a perfectly unbiased silicon-chip facility free of any influence, allies or supporters? Your argument is absurd and ludicrous on the face of it, and lives within the realm of television fantasy, not reality. This talking point of conservatism/libertarian values being Russian propaganda has been debunked ad infinitum.
Rather than debate such despicable justifying of state-based murder and corruption, i would motion that the same logic should and possibly must be applied to yourself and other statist collaborator talking points. Because ultimately it is this same collaborator statist line of thinking that allows this unchecked military industrial surveillance complex, and the long list of murder, tortures and wars, to continue. That makes you and others like you a potential domestic or foreign enemy to the constitution, bill or rights, and western freedom, period. There is no better evidence than the threat and harm of leftist/statist/communist politics and propaganda, period.

- “Because exposing the murder of innocent civilians, journalists and ‘collateral’ damage in an illegal unjust war, should be presented in a perfectly unbiased silicon-chip facility free of any influence, allies or supporters”
Yes, if you’re touting yourself as primarily concerned with the truth and calling yourself a journalist. You don’t good the truth if it’s bad enough already or it begs the question of your own motives. And you can’t get cut up about it after the fact of people want to scrutinize said motives and find even more suspicious stuff.
What’s my argument. What are you responding to in particular.
Who’s justifying the US? Why would you assume a criticism or Assange is a permissive attitude to the American war machine? See, unlike Hack ideologues like Assange a smart person doesn’t do their thinking on where their loyalties lie but on where truth is situated. And I’m sorry but Assange is a faulty vessel for truth. He simply doesn’t have any respect for the scope of what it demands. Also law, You want to talk about Law? What are you, some kind of Liberal? Gross. The only law is Lacan’s “Law” and you should wise up to that.
“Statist collaborator”is a term you should be very selective with whom you use it. Not because of any consequences on your physical person, no we’re civilized men. It just makes you seem really silly. I’m more left than you, purely in the utility or my language. Read more pseud.
