Do We Have to Say It Again? Socialism Sucks!
Apparently we do. Because today millions of Americans—young and old—are flocking to the socialist banner and chanting, “What do we want? Socialism—the economic system that has impoverished people everywhere and resulted in the deaths of tens of millions! And when do we want it? Now!”
Really?
Most people seem somehow to have missed Economics 101 and don’t understand that socialism isn’t nice, cuddly government that takes care of everything for you so that you can remain an adolescent forever. No, we’ve seen it tried over and over again with catastrophic consequences.
Luckily, two semi-sober economists have toured the socialist world so you don’t have to. And they’ve come back with this stunning report: Socialism Sucks!
Along the way, you’ll learn:
• Why the so-called Swedish model might be attractive, but sure isn’t socialism (Sweden is capitalism with a big welfare state)
• How socialist Venezuela went from being the toast of liberals everywhere—Viva Venezuela!—to being just toast
• Why you never see new cars in Cuba
• Why no one forgets to turn out the lights in North Korea (hint: there aren’t any)
• Why American socialists have no idea what socialism really is
How hard it is to find good beer—or sometimes any beer at all—in socialist countries
Irreverent but honest economists Robert Lawson and Benjamin Powell have all the data—and even more important, the firsthand global experience—to affirm that socialism fails to deliver on any of the utopian promises it makes and instead is very bad for your economic (and other) health. This is a book that every American who values freedom and sound economics (and good beer) needs to read.

This post will be triggering a LOT of Anti-American Anti-Trump SNOWFLAKES! Democrat=Socialism

The book has a few good merits:
1) It’s pretty short.
2) The content is so poor that you know it’s propaganda and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
So there’s that.

Like American debt slaves living in the corporate police-surveillance state are free - ROTFLMAO. I’m no socialist, but I am a realist. The good ole capitalist days are long gone & never coming back (I consider myself fortunate to have benefited from some of it - Gen-X, white & middle class too). All else we did right/better aside, the #1 reason us plebs in capitalists countries had it so good was because of a one time allotment of 10 million years of stored sunlight with much of it, unknown, under the ground of N America for millions of years before my ancestors helped conquer the place (it’s what humans & our chimp cousins do). Net energy decline in N America & the West started around 1970 & matches decline of real wages since then. Econ 101 is a quasi religious pseudo science - it considers energy as substitutable as any other resource - it’s not . Energy is all. Sadly, they can’t print energy like they can money. Unprecedented QE, ZIRP, NIRP since the GFC of 2009 & now (since Sept) unprecedented Fed injections for the REPO ‘market’. I’m with Yogi on date specific predictions - especially about the future, but there are numerous examples throughout history of mad money printing right before the fall of many an empire & nation. In ye olden times, like ancient Rome et al, they would replace ever greater amounts of precious metal content in coins with non precious metal to kick the can a little further. Keep the faith…. if that’s what it takes to carry on.

America has been a socialist state for freaking ever, the recipients have been the bailouts of the bent bankers , the tax cuts to the rich and the roll back of regulations which enable to make the rich even richer and the poor even sicker.
January 8th, 2020
Well, yes, Americans doesnt know what socialism is. So when they’re demanding socialism, they’re demanding what they think socialism is. Not for the state to seize all means of production and all that :p
January 8th, 2020
I have nothing against socialists, they should be treated exactly the same way as normal people.
January 8th, 2020
1. Semantics. Call it what you want. Many Americans want at least a return to the New Deal, when the country was the most prosperous and equal it has ever been. And some of us want to go much further than that.
2. Liberals (who are not the Left) never liked Venezuela. And Venezuela is in fact not socialists, by any definition. Significant amounts of the economy, and most of the media, remains in the hands of a rich minority. So if you want to gloat about its problems (which are mostly caused by a failure to diversify the economy away from oil, and being subjected to ruinous sanctions), know that capitalists still run much of the country.
3. Probably because the super-power next door keeps it under embargo.
4. North Korea is a dictatorship where workers have no power. So not socialist.
5. In fact I do. It means workers owning the means of production. Capitalists don’t exist in a socialist system, because all the farms, factories, and other businesses are owned collectively by the people who work there, rather than by a small number of rich owners who hire labor.

@noodlezombie - Point 5 says it all ……… you mean Communism. After all, that is what socialism is.
People can bitch and moan about this, that or the other but the very fact of the matter is that whatever system you have there will always be the haves & the have nots. It is in the nature of people that we have something called greed - always have and always will.
We also have people that NEED to be in control - funnily enough a large number of them seem to be socialists and work at the DMV ;-)

@Roddd
I see the ‘democracy’ part of democratic socialism has completely eluded you.
And no, actually. There is a vast body of anthropology that shows it is not a baked in default for humans to be greedy assholes.
January 15th, 2020
Well, perhaps not “greedy assholes” but certainly self-interested actors, whose self-interest sometimes extends to kinship groups & tribal organisations. Where arrangements can redound to one’s positive benefit.
Is there actually an example of democratic socialism? Anything which has ever succeeded and could therefore be used as a working model? The German Democratic Republic (GDR) (German: Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR)), commonly called East Germany, is, I hope, not the looked-for exemplar. More properly known as Stasiland. We had an overabundance of nefarious Stasilands in the last 100 years.
Is it not the case that we tax capital in order to pay for necessary social programmes? However, that is not socialism. It’s essentially capitalism with a welfare component (all very civilised, nothing to scare the equines). It kinda works, but one problem is that the costs grow incessantly.

@gk78 who wrote:”This be soo dange rite, librals be stoopid, fank gud fer presidunt trump. Dang and yee haw, gud blez ‘Murika.”
WOW!! That was such a brilliant and inspired comment…said nobody ever.
Did you think of that little bon mot all by your itsy bitsy self or did you have help?
September 2nd, 2020
@Roddd, socialism is not the same as communism, just like feudalism is not the same as capitalism, just like building a house is not the same as living in it and decorating it.
Have and have nots, the nature of people, greed… True to a large extent. We know it from history, psychology, etc.
However, socialism tends to take greed away from the equation, once it matures. Not early years of decades when the system is transitioning and trying to educate illiterate majority of people in those poor countries and many times recent colonies, you need to allow for at least 3-4-5 generations. Socialism spread in the second half of the 20th century only, except in the USSR, it didn’t have enough time to “grow up” before it was attacked economically, ideologically, politically, militarily,…
Also, if you take a good look at countries where atrocities happened, those same countries had atrocities before and after socialist years as well. It was not socialism, it was primitivism that led to primitive behaviours.
January 4th, 2021
@petezete pretty ballsy junior to think you know more than Marx and Engels who both used socialism and communism interchangeably.Amazing how you handwave away the intentional industrialized murders under collectivism as something that happened before when historically the things that killed as many people in such a short time were referred to as plagues. You socialists need to accept the blood-soaked 20th century can be laid directly at your fault from Stalin perfecting the ethnic extermination camp later used by Hitler and forced famines killing tens of millions in bare years in Cambodia and China.Your babbling about the attacks makes no sense with the UN State Department under FDR was ordered to ignore the Holodomor where millions were slaughtered for daring to stand up to the commissars.

Tons of bootlickers in the comments here. I’m sure one day you’ll be rich and can afford that nicer Buick.

“Why American socialists have no idea what socialism really is”
Same as other Americans, then?

@knothere
I don’t know if you got a free education provided by the state, but by the way you write you were overcharged.
