Using history to challenge Communist Party rule.
China’s Underground Historians and their Battle for the Future describes how some of China’s best-known writers, filmmakers, and artists have overcome crackdowns and censorship to forge a nationwide movement that challenges the Communist Party on its most hallowed its control of history.
The past is a battleground in many countries, but in China it is crucial to political power. In traditional China, dynasties rewrote history to justify their rule by proving that their predecessors were unworthy of holding power. Marxism gave this a modern gloss, describing history as an unstoppable force heading toward Communism’s triumph. The Chinese Communist Party builds on these ideas to whitewash its misdeeds and glorify its rule. Indeed, one of Xi Jinping’s signature policies is the control of history, which he equates with the party’s survival.
But in recent years, a network of independent writers, artists, and filmmakers have begun challenging this state-led disremembering. Using digital technologies to bypass China’s legendary surveillance state, their samizdat journals, guerilla media posts, and underground films document a regular pattern of from famines and purges of years past to ethnic clashes and virus outbreaks of the present–powerful and inspiring accounts that have underpinned recent protests in China against Xi Jinping’s strongman rule.
Based on years of first-hand research in Xi Jinping’s China, Sparks challenges stereotypes of a China where the state has quashed all free thought, revealing instead a country engaged in one of humanity’s great struggles of memory against forgetting―a battle that will shape the China that emerges in the mid-21st century.

Courageous people, in the samizdat tradition, emphasising the critical role of the factual historical record.
Factual history is ever the death of extreme ideology. And of course, the battle now is also to counter falsifiers & genocide deniers, where the despotic CCP regime tries to “whitewash its misdeeds & glorify its rule” once more.
Don’t allow the truth to disappear down Winston’s Memory Hole.
“Who controls the past controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”
“The Party understands that by rewriting the events of the past & controlling the narrative of history, they can maintain their position of authority.
“Suddenly there sprang into his mind, ready-made as it were, the image of a certain Comrade Ogilvy, who had recently died in battle, in heroic circumstances. . . . It was true that there was no such person as Comrade Ogilvy, but a few lines of print & a couple of faked photographs would soon bring him into existence.”

White English speaking people who have never been to the country, nor can speak or read the language always know better what happened, say, than a reporter who was there and doubly so if the reporter or eye witness is not white (they don’t count at all).
Then once the know it all white armchair historian and world class moralizer has decided he believes the NYT or WaPo or Guardian version, he will defend it as if his loved ones lives depend on spreading his version like a plague to as many people as he can in his internet hours.
Columbia Journalism Review supposedly carries a lot of weight with the American and other western reporters.
Let’s see what they say about an supposed event the west has used to beat China over the head for 25 years.
~~~~~~~~~~
“Mathews is an education reporter for The Washington Post. He was the paper’s first Beijing bureau chief and returned in 1989 to help cover the Tiananmen demonstrations. With his wife, Linda Mathews, he is the author of One Billion: A China Chronicle. This piece originally ran in the September/October 1998 issue of the Columbia Journalism Review.”
:
“Over the last decade, many American reporters and editors have accepted a mythical version of that warm, bloody night. They repeated it often before and during Clinton’s trip.
The problem is this: as far as can be determined from the available evidence, no one died that night in Tiananmen Square.”
“A few people may have been killed by random shooting on streets near the square, but all verified eyewitness accounts say that the students who remained in the square when troops arrived were allowed to leave peacefully. Hundreds of people, most of them workers and passersby, did die that night, but in a different place and under different circumstances.”
I’ve seen white armchair historians who have a HUGE emotional attachment to a student massacre happening in T Square call conspiracy when presented with the fact there is no evidence for said massacre and respected American reporters who were there saying so.
.
It becomes a twisted Liberty Valance, print the myth scenario.
Look how mad you get being presented with a different and verified version show you were duped because they know exactly how to spin it to trigger Y’all. Just think of all that self righteous loud moralizing Y’all have done over just this one non event you were duped into believing?
C’mon. If you fell for the SUPER DUPER EVIL “Tiananmen Square massacre” wrong, what other world events are also BS versions spun by western corporate state media to make the competition look like the bad guy and you’ve fallen for it too?
The beauty of T Square was that picture. Oh how that one picture made you burn & want to take down the PRC commie party. Millions of white westerners ate it up without any evidence. If they had a picture of a student in front of a tank, where’s the pictures of the alleged massacre? Oh right, the photographer ran out of film. Student facing off against tank was, unfortunately, his last picture and he just happened to forget his other 20 rolls of new film back at the hotel otherwise we would totally have hundreds of pictures of the massacre.
…genocidal regime defence & genocide denial of the lowest order.
“look like the bad guy” - Ask the victims (who remain alive) - their testimonies are available. Or do an ignorant trolling armchair genocidal regime apologia. Because the millions of victims aren’t “white,” I suppose? So their lives don’t matter?
Even Beijing’s mayor at the time, Chen Xitong, admitted the Tiananmen massacre (most of the murders took place beyond the Square itself, as the peaceful protestors for democracy & human rights were pursued by the military). He referred to the bloody crackdown as “a regrettable tragedy that could have been avoided.”
However, a good book, for the historically illiterate, demented con theorist:
