*A GUARDIAN BEST FORTHCOMING BOOK OF 2023*
The #1 bestselling economist opens our eyes to the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world.
No one noticed when capitalism was … replaced.
Perhaps we were too distracted by the pandemic, or the endless financial crises, or the rise of TikTok. But under cover of them all, a new and more exploitative system has been taking hold.
Insane sums of money that were supposed to re-float our economies went to big tech instead. Having privatised the internet, big tech has been able to replace capitalism’s twin pillars - markets and profit - with its platforms and rents. With every click and scroll, we labour like serfs to increase its power. Welcome to technofeudalism: the new power that is reshaping our lives and the world, and the greatest current threat to social democracy.
Drawing on stories from Greek Myth and pop culture, from Homer to Mad Men, world-famous economist Yanis Varoufakis explains this revolutionary transformation: how it enslaves our minds, how it rewrites the rules of global power and ultimately what it will take overthrow it.

Fair play to Yanis, he’s a seriously wealthy guy, with a substantial property portfolio, and many other assets. He does have that cool Bond villain look, too. Viva la revolución!
His party received a serious kicking in the June elections.
When he took office as finance minister in 2015, he boasted that he would negotiate a massive write-down of Greece’s debt.
Instead, his confrontation with the EU led to a run on the Greek banks & the near collapse of the entire economy. He resigned after 6 mths.
Thereafter, he continued to advise other small Euro countries to follow his economic prescriptions & renege on their debts, as a route to economic success & glory.
Oddly, he has yet to acknowledge his leading role in the disaster wrought by the pursuit of fantasy economic policies which destroyed the living standards of working people in Greece.
There’s a lesson in there for those who desire radical & simplistic panaceas to complex economic problems.

This book was released in September which at best means there’s nothing newer than the end of 2022. How can we take a book so out of date seriously?

caesar, who knew one guy had such power? You would think he would crown himself King & Pope.
So it’s not in the least bit complex, involving other people and heaven forbid any influence, good or bad, from other nations or mother nature NOPE it all boils down to one mustache twirling generic bad guy. Same as Russia gate.
**How economics became a religion** The long read
‘
“Its moral code promises salvation, its high priests uphold their orthodoxy. But perhaps too many of its doctrines are taken on faith.
‘
Although England has an established church, few of us today pay it much mind. We follow an even more powerful religion, around which we have oriented our lives: economics. Think about it. Economics offers a comprehensive doctrine with a moral code promising adherents salvation in this world; an ideology so compelling that the faithful remake whole societies to conform to its demands. It has its gnostics, mystics and magicians who conjure money out of thin air, using spells such as “derivative” or “structured investment vehicle”. And, like the old religions it has displaced, it has its prophets, reformists, moralists and above all, its high priests who uphold orthodoxy in the face of heresy.”

“We have a finite environment—the planet. Anyone who thinks that you can have infinite growth in a finite environment is either a madman or an economist.”

And after all that, Yanis is himself…an economist. Devastating.
“who knew 1 guy had such power” - He was finance minister. And govt policy & definitive declarations can (& did in Yanis’ case) have a very real & catastrophic impact on market confidence & consequently the real livelihoods of workers. Y’know, the people he claims to care about. Still hasn’t acknowledged it though. Expediently, it’s always someone else’s fault. Funny how that always works out. And he continued to advise other small EU states to devastate their own economies in the same stupid, failed manner. Economists, eh?

Thank you :) Good reading.

A prophet for our times. Ignore the resident curmudgeon. Yanis failed as a finance minister in an already failed state surrounded by powerful neoliberal powers. There is no justice among this type of an unequal match of forces. Still there is an idea whose time is fast approaching and Yanis is on the right side of history.

Oh look, Caesar is here again to make comments that have nothing whatsoever to do with the book, which he clearly has not read, and everything to do with his little bubble world ideology being threatened by anyone who doesn’t intimately share each and every one of his delusions.
