A timely deep dive into cancel culture, an account of its dangers to all Americans, and the much-needed antidote from the team that brought you Coddling of the American Mind.
Cancel culture is a new phenomenon, and The Canceling of the American Mind is the first book to codify it and survey its effects. From the team that brought you the bestselling Coddling of the American Mind comes hard data and research on what cancel culture is and how it works, along with hundreds of new examples showing the left and the right both working to silence their enemies.
The Canceling of the American Mind will change how you view cancel culture. Rather than a moral panic, we should consider it a dysfunctional part of how Americans battle for power, status, and dominance. Cancel culture is just one symptom of a much larger problem: the use of cheap rhetorical tactics to “win” arguments without actually winning arguments. After all, why bother refuting your opponents when you can just take away their platform or career?
The good news is that we can beat back this threat to democracy through better citizenship. The Canceling of the American Mind offers concrete steps toward reclaiming a free speech culture, with materials specifically tailored for parents, teachers, business leaders, and everyone who uses social media. We can all show intellectual humility and promote the essential American principles of individuality, resilience, and open mindedness.

LOL. Good god, imagine being this intellectually bankrupt.

thanks for this!

There is nothing remotely new about using cheap rhetorical tactics to win an argument: Carneades delivered a series of lectures on the technique in Rome probably in 155 BC.
Sadly there is nothing remotely old about it either. Even as I post the Republican party is sending anonymous spiteful emails out to the wives of Republican congressmen who refuse to fall into line.

An easier solution than everybody just being better citizens would be to not use your platform to say f*cked up things. It would have been okay to come out and say you were hesitant to take the vaccine since studies of its effects were still being formed let alone being conducted. It’s a poor argument since you’re trading something that, historically, has saved the human race from obliteration [vaccines] versus the known [the virus has killed over a million Americans and continues to do so even today]. But it was still a valid “side” to the debate. Not wanting to take the vaccine because Bill Gates is chipping everyone…well, it’s still a valid reason (for you) but then using a platform built by people supporting you to expound on your conspiracy theory and then those people who supported you decide not to anymore, that’s not being cancelled, it’s accountability. You can go on a racist diatribe in the middle of your standup show, that’s your right. Losing your career because someone took a video of said diatribe and posted it so the world could see it, that’s not being canceled. Want to deny the Holocaust happened? That’s fine, in the mirror or with your Holocaust-denying buddies. Post it online, as is your freedom, and the juju you get back from the sane, educated, and elderly populations might have you outraged at your sudden life changes. There’s still no such thing as cancel culture.

I agree with Malchie 250.
You should be able to say anything you want. Just be prepared to suffer the consequences of said speech. For example, if your boss tells you that he believes everything on Qnon and the earth is flat. You have two choices. One shut up do your job and just ignore him. The second choice is to call him out and show him facts and why you believe he is wrong. Just don’t be surprised when he finds a way to fire you. That is not cancel culture. It is basic wisdom. What people who complain about cancel culture want is the ability to say anything about anything right or wrong without repercussions of any kind. That includes slander calls to violence and hate. Threats are also a good thing to them. That is all part of the cancel culture.

The willing fools who endorse deplatforming are extremely naive to think that it will only be used in their favour. Sooner rather than later the switch will be flipped and they will become the victims of the totalitarianism they so willingly helped to normalize.
Call me a pessimist, but I don’t think this toothpaste can be put back in the tube so easily.

People cancel themselves from society with their actions when he rest of society finds them repugnant. Leave it to Republicans to be butt hurt about it.

At least the blurb claims to see faults on both left and right.
That’s a treatise on cancel culture I can consider. For every college campus banning non-woke speakers, there’s some busy school moms trying to ban history books.

The Dixie Chicks mess was 20 years ago, and David Bohm being fired from Princeton and leaving the country more than 70; definitely not a new phenomenon.

@ Thamus: “Sooner rather than later the switch will be flipped and they will become the victims of the totalitarianism they so willingly helped to normalize.”
LOL!!! You mean like when white christian men were CRYING about gangsta rap 30 years ago?? When NWA was banned and sued because they were “corrupting children”?? When 2-Live Crew was cancelled for enjoying sex, which christians hate unless little boys are involved?? You mean like when Ice-T and Body Count were cancelled for singing ‘Cop Killer’ meanwhile Arnold and Mel Gibson blow away hundreds of cops in their movies??? Is that what you mean?? Someone else mentioned the Dixie Chicks and there are HUNDREDS of other examples of white christian men getting together and deciding what everyone else is allowed to know.
White christian men are the MOST likely people to want to cancel everyone and when someone wants to shut them up, they create some kind of unique phenomenon in which they are being threatened and pursued, a unique moment in history, omg, help us!!! The bottom line is that white christian men have no problem hunting others, but when they become the hunted, do they use those survival skills they make all those shows about?? Do they show us how a real man is able to survive and move on, because white men are so tough and resilient?? ABSOLUTELY NOT!! They go into the corner and start crying because a black guy said he wants to kill a cop!! “OMG!!! WAHHHH!!! Give me a tissue!! You can’t say that!!! Only I’m allowed to say things!!! Wahhh!!!”
LOL, white men….

I always thought cancel culture was just an extension of the free market. If you provide goods or services no one wants you disappear in the market. Well if you provide a philosophy or ideas no one wants you will disappear. The Good Ole murican free market at work.

It is funny. Ever since humans have been getting together into groups. Cancel culture has been around. Just try running around in Revolutionary America screaming and acting the fool and see how fast you end up in prison or the loony bin. People have been pushed out of groups all the time. It is just now that people are getting butt hurt about it.
Look I got a perfect solution. Bring back Dueling. Just you and the guy who says something stupid meeting with a sword for each. Fight until someone is dead or yields and says they are wrong.
Then if you are right god will be on your side and you will win.
It would sure make you think twice about saying stupid stuff. With every post, you would have to think can I fight all the people that I piss off and win.
Seems to me that would fix everything.

joe444, yes the blurb claims to see cancel culture on the left and right, but the group the author heads overwhelmingly champions right wing extremists.
(Check out their Wikipedia page).
Cancel culture is a kind of misnomer, I think, and certainly not new — there has always been censorship in American society, but it was mostly imposed by institutions before. Now it is a bit more unpredictable
50 years ago it was dangerous to question the military industrial complex if you wanted to remain employed. After 9/11, journalists who argued against war were railroaded out of their jobs.
The 1988 book Manufacturing Consent: The Political Economy of the Mass Media by Edward S. Herman and Noam Chomsky is a superb read if you have time.
It argues that the mass communication media of the U.S. “are effective and powerful ideological institutions that carry out a system-supportive propaganda function, by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without overt coercion”, by means of the propaganda model of communication.
Add social media and influencers to the legacy forces at play here and little has changed.

Malachie520,
You allege there is no such thing as cancel culture, which, and sorry for raining on your parade, is very much a blatant lie as cancel culture is alive and well in Canada, the UK and USA.
Oh, and this old git happens to be very much on the LEFT and is no bloody Libtard, or fascist.
Now, either acknowledge TRUTH, or perhaps refrain from spreading your Liberal crap that can’t even acknowledge the reality of cancel culture that has taken hold in academia and many of our institutions.

1. No one is denying the fact that groups of people make the choice to exclude others.
2. People are disagreeing with conservatives adding a scary name to it and pretending this hasn’t been the norm for as long as humans have existed.
3. You cannot force people to give you money, time, attention, or affiliation and it’s weird to want to.
4. Christians waged a 250 year war to cancel muslims for believing in a different imaginary friend than them. There is nothing that you can name that the left has done that even comes close.
5. Acknowledge deez nuts.

@26chrisr Just use their preferred pronouns and you’ll be fine. Stop crying. There is no cancel culture in academia. There is ’stop teaching stupid outdated mentality’ in academia and, good. There should be. Which of the “many of our institutions” do you believe ‘cancels’ people? I’ll go first: the U.S. House of Representatives. Okay, it’s not really the best example right now as it’s temporarily stymied itself from accomplishing anything because of those wanting to outdo each other in galactic stupidity, but they were actively passing…no, passing is too strong a word…trying to bring to a vote…hmm, no, that’s still not correct…fantasizing (there you go) about laws that ‘cancel’ education, civil rights, medical health, and human decency. Thankfully, with the Republicans in charge of the House, very little will get done since they are incapable of governing. B*tching, yes. Accepting credit for stuff they didn’t vote for, for sure, yes. Doing something meaningful and earning their six-figure paycheck? We’ll have to wait until 2024 and hope the House switches majorities before anything positive *for everyone* will happen again. With the Indicted Former Guy being the Republican front-runner, there’s no worry about the Presidential election. We’ll get to have a competent President in Biden for another four years and maybe, finally, prison will silence the Orange One for good.

The American Mind
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!
My god, I needed cheering up today and that has surely done the job!
The dumbest, fattest, laziest, most infantile people on the planet think they’ve got anything in their minds worth saving???
Cancel away! Nobody will ever know the difference!
The American Mind!!!!

The audio is great. Rikki, the author reads it very well. It’s an excellent follow up to Jonathan Haidt’s The Coddling of The American Mind.
