In the aftermath of World War II, America stood alone as the world’s premier military power. Yet its martial confidence contrasted vividly with its sense of cultural inferiority. Still looking to a defeated and dispirited Europe for intellectual and artistic guidance, burgeoning transnational elite in New York and Washington embraced not only the war’s refugees but many of their ideas as well, and nothing has proven more pernicious than those of the Frankfurt School and its reactionary philosophy of “critical theory”. At once overly intellectualized and emotionally juvenile, critical theory - like Pandora’s box - released a horde of demons into the American psyche. When everything could be questioned, nothing could be real, and the muscular, confident empiricism that had just won the war gave way, in less than a generation, to a Central European nihilism celebrated on college campuses across the United States. In The Devil’s Pleasure Palace, Michael Walsh looks at how critical theory took root in America and came to affect nearly every aspect of American life and society - and what can be done to stop it.

Ah yes, asking questions is bad. Questions like “Why do non-whites have to use a different bathroom?” and “If everyone is equal, how come women have fewer rights than men?” and “Is the international sale of addictive drugs an appropriate source of funding for secret government operations, also should the US government be conducting secret operations not approved by congress?”
Clearly questions like those, which critical theory encouraged people to ask, are entirely the source of all of America’s ills, as opposed to the practices being questioned. Remember, its only the land of the free and the home of the brave if we exercise as few of our freedoms as possible (they get worn out through overuse don’tcha know) keep our heads down (while cowering in fear of our betters) and obey non-elected authority without question. I’m describing democracy right? No? Point is, I’m sure the author is completely correct, or I would be, if I thought about his point at all. But I can’t. Because that might raise some questions and this book is about not asking them.

@erouting,
Exactly. Just do what the master said and don’t you dare ask why!

Somehow I’m having trouble visualizing Ronald Reagan sitting up late at night with a volume of Benjamin, Adorno, or Marcuse. I can’t even convince myself that Joseph McCarthy was a Marxist.
Seriously, America’s problems have never come from being too smart.

@crouting
Those questions are great ones. Unfortunately they are not asked anymore in the classrooms of academia. In fact, when you raise them, as I did, you’re laughed out of the room for being naive.
I don’t know who this author is and it’s entirely possible he’s another hack. But the cynicism and profound passivity of the Ivy League elite is harmful to the society, and it is no corrective to the problems in the States. It is old-fashioned sneering, high-falutin’ corruption.

structuralism and deconstruction are the parents of critical theory. these may be integral to a densely populated intellectualized society. but they’re also problematic in the same way that mirrors are problematic; if you break things into pieces some people will see infinite possibilities and some will see a broken mess

“When everything could be questioned, nothing could be real, and the muscular, confident empiricism that had just won the war gave way, in less than a generation, to a Central European nihilism”
This is just advocating “Make America Great Again”, using longer words.

@Gweilo
Stay mad, and sneed.

The Frankfurt boys and their off-shoot subversive branches demolish nations from within, creating political and cultural vacuums. Chaos and demoralization are their weapons of choice. Emotionally driven, gullible youth are their foot soldiers. They gleefully carve their own path toward fascism.

tommybejones you opened your mouth and proved you have NO comeback and instead pulled some trash out your-ass that had absolutely nothing to do with erouting’s clear comments. You’re doing what a loser who’s widdle feelings have a boo boo does. You can’t come up with even 1 single argument to the man and need to resort to name calling like your homo erotic super daddy Trump does ever time he opens his tard-hole.
