One of the U.S. government’s leading China experts reveals the hidden strategy fueling that country’s rise – and how Americans have been seduced into helping China overtake us as the world’s leading superpower.
For more than forty years, the United States has played an indispensable role helping the Chinese government build a booming economy, develop its scientific and military capabilities, and take its place on the world stage, in the belief that China’s rise will bring us cooperation, diplomacy, and free trade. But what if the “China Dream” is to replace us, just as America replaced the British Empire, without firing a shot?
Based on interviews with Chinese defectors and newly declassified, previously undisclosed national security documents, The Hundred-Year Marathon reveals China’s secret strategy to supplant the United States as the world’s dominant power, and to do so by 2049, the one-hundredth anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic. Michael Pillsbury, a fluent Mandarin speaker who has served in senior national security positions in the U.S. government since the days of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, draws on his decades of contact with the “hawks” in China’s military and intelligence agencies and translates their documents, speeches, and books to show how the teachings of traditional Chinese statecraft underpin their actions. He offers an inside look at how the Chinese really view America and its leaders – as barbarians who will be the architects of their own demise.
Pillsbury also explains how the U.S. government has helped – sometimes unwittingly and sometimes deliberately – to make this “China Dream” come true, and he calls for the United States to implement a new, more competitive strategy toward China as it really is, and not as we might wish it to be. The Hundred-Year Marathon is a wake-up call as we face the greatest national security challenge of the twenty-first century.

According to the New York Times At the time of its release, Mr. Pillsbury’s book was widely mocked as fringe and it drew criticism as subpar scholarship. Jude Blanchette, former assistant director of the 21st Century China Program at the University of California, San Diego, panned Mr. Pillsbury’s claims of unparalleled access to Chinese sources as “unverifiable,” questioned whether his ideas were lifted from the popular press and said that his footnotes were “filled with errors, misdirection and puzzling omissions.”
If its your bag listen away but its fiction.

While we can’t be sure of the merits of the book, and we shouldn’t unduly impugn the bona fides of the impressively & aptly named “21st Century China Program” - that reaction/contribution sounds more than a little…rehearsed? A placement in the Ministry of Truth doth beckon.

We have to remember China is what a lot of people accuse Trump being, an authoritarian. The difference is nothing restricts China. They are used to covering up their sins or they hire a brand to cover up for them (the WHO and the UN for instance). The Chinese are also good at pretending to be meek and gormless, they are not.

A New York times comment always has been to the left of Stalin (as the old saying goes). When inconvenient facts are written about anything, lefties inevitably mock and try to cast aspersions . It’s what they do (automatic knee-jerk reaction), it’s what they are.
Thank you for this share, looking forward to listening (and making up my own mind) about the contents.

.. their latest form of economic warfare vs the western world seems very flagrant ;P
I wonder what the bill will be for it at the end, Its not like they are likely to even waste money on it themselves letting it run its course.. China is probably going to come out of it smelling like roses.

“Secret strategy”? China was never secretive about its ambition to be the dominant superpower.
April 19th, 2020
That would have to be so; but the actual strategy to further & achieve that goal, in order to be at all effective, should not be publicised. Otherwise, it would risk being like one of those movie villains who explain the entire plan to us, before/instead of killing us. They usually also include the only method by which we could stymie their sinister stratagem.
That’s the plan which our wily author is attempting to uncover. Before Gert Fröbe’s laser reaches his splayed nethers.

@caesar: no, there is no “secret”. A superpower cannot execute a strategy involving a billion people over decades “secretly”.
It is “secret” only to those who wilfully ignore it, ether out of stupidity and/or greed.
Anyway, that title is just clickbait, it’s whether there is actually anything new in the analysis that matters.
