A play on Hayek’s Road to Serfdom… no mention of marxism or postmodernism… scapegoating the ‘right-wing’ nationalist baddies (fascism is left-wing, kids)… Russia is no longer socialist and is now the enemy…
Bloodlands was informative, but it doesn’t look good for this book. What is it with ((())) and defending marxists?

ratiotile, you clearly distinguish yourself as an anti-intellectual. A quick look in a history reference under DEFINITIONS will improve your comprehension of what fascism, communism, socialism, and conservatism are. Also be sure to red about POPULISM. It may be worth while to gain an understanding of scapegoating, that postmodernism is a joke, marxism has been dead for over a century, and there are no socialists. Mkay thx.

This is an American phenomenon, attempting to revise history to repaint early 20th-century nationalist movements as being socialist.
It’s only become worse in recent years, with the rise of contemporary nationalist movements and the parallels that can be drawn between them and those of a century ago. Given that everyone agrees that the nationalists a century ago were pretty evil, the current ones need to rationalise it away: “those nationalists who were similar to us were actually socialists and we’re not socialists despite that we act the same way as early 20th century fascists, who were socialists.”
We need a new Olympic event for mental gymnastics.

Damn, not often I randomly come across a comment I made years ago.
@pinback — people in Germany at the time didn’t fall for it, there’s zero excuse for someone to fall for it a century later. The Nazis barely pretended to be socialists, e.g. they never complained about being seated on the far-right of the Reichstag, to the right of the conservatives, with the communists on the far left, to the left of the socialists, with the liberals and Catholics and others in the center.
The whole reason Hitler joined a socialist party in the first place was because he was infiltrating it on behalf of the German military, with a mind to suppressing it if it became successful. Then Hitler took it over, added “national” to the name and took it right. There was a socialist wing within the Nazi party but they were either pushed out or murdered (e.g. Night of the Long Knives).
Of course, pinback would know all that if they had a single clue about the relevant history, but they don’t, they were just regurgitating talking points about a matter they’re not familiar with.
