From Andrew Yang, the founder of Venture for America, an eye-opening look at how new technologies are erasing millions of jobs before our eyes - and a rallying cry for the urgent steps America must take, including Universal Basic Income, to stabilize our economy.
The shift toward automation is about to create a tsunami of unemployment. Not in the distant future - now. One recent estimate predicts 13 million American workers will lose their jobs within the next seven years - jobs that won’t be replaced. In a future marked by restlessness and chronic unemployment, what will happen to American society?
In The War on Normal People, Andrew Yang paints a dire portrait of the American economy. Rapidly advancing technologies like artificial intelligence, robotics, and automation software are making millions of Americans’ livelihoods irrelevant. The consequences of these trends are already being felt across our communities in the form of political unrest, drug use, and other social ills. The future looks dire - but is it unavoidable?
In The War on Normal People, Yang imagines a different future - one in which having a job is distinct from the capacity to prosper and seek fulfilment. At this vision’s core is Universal Basic Income, the concept of providing all citizens with a guaranteed income - and one that is rapidly gaining popularity among forward-thinking politicians and economists. Yang proposes that UBI is an essential step toward a new, more durable kind of economy.

This is this the guy that “ran” for President by using Taxpayer’s money (our money) to give everyone in America $1,000 a month.
That would cost 3.9 Trillion per year!!
Yang would eat his own bowel movement if he thought that would get him elected.

There is no such thing as “taxpayer’s money”. Taxes pay for nothing. Taxes are there to save democracy from becoming oligarchy. Low taxes inevitably lead to oligartchy, inequality and corruption of democracy. Best countries have highest taxes.
UBI is not the answer but it might buy our oligarchies some time before poor people finally destroy them.

@apollo60 You might read about an idea before trashing it. The GOP’s “give more money to millionaires” idea hasn’t worked that well for most (except for the millionaires).
Trickle up (which is what UBI does) has more rationale than trickle down.

@apollo60 it’s not rewarding people for doing nothing man. It’s investing in them so they can do the things that’ll benefit the country. The reason that most people you deem unworthy of 1000 dollars a month can’t do anything is because they’re clogged up by bills they can’t pay because of your messed up political system. If people can get collateral money at least an extra 12000 dollars a year, they can stop thinking about emergency hospital bills and actually contribute to society. If we give reliefs to billionaires who’re the one percent in our country, there’ll just be a bigger gap between the poor and the rich
