The Words That Made Us: America’s Constitutional Conversation, 1760-1840 - Akhil Reed Amar Audiobook
Shared by:cryotag
A history of the American Constitution’s formative decades from a preeminent legal scholar
When the US Constitution won popular approval in 1788, it was the culmination of thirty years of passionate argument over the nature of government. But ratification hardly ended the conversation. For the next half century, ordinary Americans and statesmen alike continued to wrestle with weighty questions in the halls of government and in the pages of newspapers. Should the nation’s borders be expanded? Should America allow slavery to spread westward? What rights should Indian nations hold? What was the proper role of the judicial branch?
In The Words that Made Us, Akhil Reed Amar unites history and law in a vivid narrative of the biggest constitutional questions early Americans confronted, and he expertly assesses the answers they offered. His account of the document’s origins and consolidation is a guide for anyone seeking to properly understand America’s Constitution today.

The words that made US, by Akhil Reed Amar. All I am going to say is “incongruous”.

Sadly, for Mr. Amar, his most famous student authored the “torture memos” used by the G. W. Bush administration.

@ssafe - We covered that in human rights law. They relied on the ECHR case, Kelly v UK (1987). The tribunal’s jurisprudence has developed to the point that, if the case was held even 20 years later, it would likely have a different outcome. Such treatment would be ruled as torture, rather than the more slip-tastic “enhanced interrogation techniques” - realistically, states have always used de facto torture.
The dodginess of the “War on Turrr” situation is epitomised by the tendency to do the dirty deeds off-site, as ’twere.

@caesar: Everything old is new again, the “water cure” was among the forms of torture used by American soldiers on Filipinos during the Philippine–American War.
But, hey, when we want to keep our hands clean in the next war, perhaps we call on Egypt for ‘help’.

Ain’t no clean hands nowhere, see?

Ugg-tastic

So you both agree with the writer about how words are defined and used is very important. Mainly here. Enhanced interrogation and water cures and Ugg-tastic are simple terms used to dodge getting caught doing bad thins. Or even just stupid comments that get called out.

Stupid comments - and adequate reading comprehension. ssafe, you torture-booster, you!
