From Bernie Sanders’ presidential campaign to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, the U.S. is witnessing a leftward shift that hasn’t been seen for decades. But how many Americans truly understand socialism and socialist principles? The New Socialist Handbook is a simple way to learn about this political system and bear witness to its current movement with an educated and informed mind. It discusses topics such as:
Different types of socialism (democratic socialism vs. social democracy vs. eco-socialism, etc.);
How socialism became a dirty word;
Which countries are socialist or have socialist programs;
The way socialism exists in the U.S. today (Medicare, Social Security, etc.);
Socialist suggestions for today’s issues (healthcare, infrastructure, economy, etc.);
What can you do to bring about change? (getting involved in politics, educating yourself, demonstrating, etc.)
Perfect for the engaged voter or the armchair political scientist, pundit, enthusiast, or anyone simply looking to get a better intellectual grasp on socialism, The New Socialist Handbook gives meaning and definition to the commonly misunderstood. Author Dan Tucker breaks down these topics in a clear, accessible way and without a political slant. Readers will come away with a better understanding of the history of socialism and what it means in our world today.

Getting in early to see some of the stupid comments that pop up. Thanks for the upload.

The six contradictions of socialism in the USSR
● There is no unemployment - yet no one is working
● No one is working - yet the factory quotas are fulfilled
● The factory quotas are fulfilled - yet the stores have nothing to sell
● The stores have nothing to sell - yet people’s homes are full of stuff
● People’s homes are full of stuff - yet no one is happy
● No one is happy - yet the voting [for the regime] is always unanimous
The six contradictions of socialism in the USA
● America is capitalist and greedy - yet half of the population is subsidized
● Half of the population is subsidized - yet they think they are victims
● They think they are victims - yet their representatives run the government
● Their representatives run the government - yet the poor keep getting poorer
● The poor keep getting poorer - yet they have things that people in other countries only dream about
● They have things that people in other countries only dream about - yet they want America to be more like those other countries

There’ll be no stoopid comments in the New/Old Utopia. On pain of non-metaphorical pain.

@alnilam you don’t half like to waffle on at length to say the most basic of things don’t you? Why say “socialism is bad” when you can write an essay that nobody will bother to read.

> …how many Americans truly understand socialism and socialist principles?
I guess the majority of them do, as there’s no long queues of socialism aficionados willing to relinquish their American citizenship, buy one-way ticket and board the first plane departing to this or that socialist paradise.

Thnk you for sharing, the true socialist spirit!!
(yes, sharing equals socialism)

@alnilam so you’re as indoctrinated as most North Koreans. Well done.

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.
2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.
3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.
4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!
5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

A pyramid scheme is ultimately unsustainable because it is based on faulty principles. Likewise, collectivism is unsustainable in the long run because it is a flawed theory. Socialism does not work because it is not consistent with fundamental principles of human behavior. The failure of socialism in countries around the world can be traced to one critical defect: it is a system that ignores incentives.

I think itasha’s 5th point sums up where we are in quite a large part of hte world.
June 24th, 2021
That doesn’t really work pun intended. The top 5% (net worth of ~$17M) don’t even account for 1/10th of 1 percent of the productivity in the world. Yet they account for over 65% of all the wealth. That argument is based off a false straw man.
Socialist policies are the reason the poverty rate in advanced nation is reasonably low, it’s why literacy rates have gone up dramatically and in most of the developed world life expectancy is so high.
Pure capitalist states don’t even exist outside the developing world and none of them have stable economies. It’s not something you distill into a black and white issue.

I don’t have the energy to delve into economic theory, but I do know that anyone who calls me a socialist for suggesting that Amazon ought to pay at least as much tax as I do is tossing out red herrings.

Sorry socialism always fails….

Know what’s socialist? The fire department. Everyone chips in (or at least they’re supposed to) some tax money to help fund it. Along with roads, most schools, libraries, etc.
You’re all fans of socialism, you just hate to call it what it is. If you were really against socialism you’d let your house burn to ground, pay for private schooling, never use roads or libraries. Or use this website.

We should all be in the business of applauding & promoting such social goods as roads & libraries. However, we can’t retroactively co-opt & label every instance of cooperation in human history as socialist, for ideological purposes.
It would be like asserting that, because the Church created such beneficial goods as the hospital, the university, schools, systematic charity & poor relief - when no one else would do it - that the Christian Church is ideologically socialist; or that all manifestations of beneficial human cooperation (even pre-Christian) are Christian. I can only imagine people’s heads exploding at that one.
Or, because socialist regimes have an appalling human rights record, we might label all appalling regimes throughout history as socialist. This would also be inaccurate.
The state itself preexisted socialism, and taxed for its own vital & selfish purposes. This encompassed roads, schools, institutional services. Private charities also existed (still exist). Socialism is a much broader ordering project than the local fireman. The modern state is about electoral choices on how to allocate funds from essential market activity. State efficiency & trustworthiness are also vital factors. We ought to beware the historical retcon artist.
Of course, every individual & entity should be taxed proportionately & sustainably.

funny how right-wingers HATE the S-word but can’t explain what it means, while happily cashing their social security checks and using medicare

The Christian church IS ideologically socialist, believe it or not. Once you get past all the bastardized versions of Christianity you see in America, a lot of the teachings (especially in the New Testament) shun mass accumulation of wealth and advocate looking out for those less fortunate than you. Jesus most definitely was not a capitalist, despite what Americans like to tell themselves. And he definitely wouldn’t have been a Republican.
June 25th, 2021
But that’s the thing, it assumes & co-opts all beneficial cooperation & action as ideologically socialist, when even in terms of historical sequencing, that can’t be the case. It rules out beneficial action by non-socialist, liberal democracy; private, charitable efforts; religiously inspired goods, etc. All of which predate ideological socialism.
Christianity is neither capitalist nor socialist. Over in the States, there’s this (marginal) perspective known as the “Prosperity Gospel” which is indeed a parody of Christianity (”God wants u 2 b rich!” - Yeah: rich in spirit). But Christianity does not deem wealth, in & of itself, to be evil. If it’s treated as an end rather than a means - in a purely materialistic fashion - that is regarded as evil (or tending towards evil, as they say).
However, Christianity considers that individual agency & action - in order to qualify as essentially good or evil - must be voluntary & uncoerced. The individual soul free from external compulsion (from a state actor, for inst). If I’m compelled to act in a charitable fashion, that is not meritorious. It’s a lifeless action, in terms of Christian ethics. The choice cannot be made by another.
Free, dignified agency to choose your course is core to Christianity. Conduct then achieves its fullest integrity. Socialism broadly indicates control, by the state, of resources & assets. This preempts/obviates & removes agency. Whereas, individuals choosing to act towards good ends; using their skills, gifts & intelligence to voluntarily aid others constitutes an unequivocal, categorical good.

Kantian deontological duty-based ethics are essentially Christian ethics.

iaudiophile-You mean cashing those SS checks where they took out $$$ all your life and then give you a very small percentage every month right before you die? If you are lucky enough to live past 64-67? Yeah… didn’t think that out huh cupcake? How about they just leave ‘retirement’ to the individual. Stop stealing from one person then giving it to everyone else. Then if you save up you have something left after you stop working. You don’t save up…you are sh*t out of luck.
I LOVE those who say some don’t pay their ‘fair share’. But they don’t look at the $. Just at percentages. My family paid about $10K in taxes last year. So to be fair, EVERYONE should pay $10K in taxes every year. No mater how much you make. And where does this ‘fairness’ stop? You pay $1 for a loaf of bread. I pay $2 for the SAME loaf. Another pays $40. No. That wouldn’t be FAIR.

Jack_Milad-Jesus wouldn’t be a Democrat either. Unless you think he would be alright with aborting babies. Democrats THRIVE on hate and violence to get their way. Just look at the last 18 months. Yes, some Republicans attacked the Capital. For how long? A few hours? Did they burn it to the ground? No. Are they still there? No. How long has Portland been under siege? And Democrats are ALWAYS using race as a tool to get what they want and to control minorities. So no… Jesus would NOT be a Democrat.

Jack Milad. The fire department is not socialist, it is insurance. You wouldn’t say that the AA (Or AAA) is socialist would you. Everyone pays a bit into the AA, that allows it to operate a fleet of breakdown vehicles, when you breakdown, they come and rescue you. True socialism would require everyone to devote not just money (a fair exchange of money for goods and/or services - capitalism), but time and personal effort by spending one day a week working as a firefighter and sitting on the steering committee working out ways to make the job impossible.
Christianity is also not socialist and neither was Jesus. Jesus stated ‘render unto Caesar, that which is Caesar’s.’. That being a Tithe, or a tenth of yearly output - not 50% or more as most citizens are essentially taxed at today. The rest of your wealth is your own. Sure he also said that ‘Tt is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven’ but that has nothing to do with being a socialist, but about not being avaricious. See the woman who gives away her only coin being more holy than the businessman who gave much more, but an amount that barely touched his wealth. The woman was not a socialist - she didn’t ’share’ her wealth. In fact the Businessman shared more. The woman gave her wealth away. Jesus also has no problem with rich people if they act in a Christian way. See the parable of the prodigal son. See the story of Joseph. If you think that Christianity = socialism, then you are seriously misinformed as to what Christianity is.
The final nail in the coffin of this Socialist/Christianity rubbish is the modern socialist ideal of Equity, which promotes everyone claiming to be a victim so that they get more assistance from the state. Socialism promotes victimhood. Show me where in the Bible, Jesus ever claims to be a victim. No, he faces his fate with fortitude. As opposed to that eternal victim - Hitler. A man who felt victimised by WW1, victimised by Art Critics, who convinced Germany that they were victims of both the European powers and the Jews and convinced them that they could murder those ‘oppressors’ in order to raise themselves.
