A major theoretical statement by a distinguished political scholar explains why a policy of liberal hegemony is doomed to fail
In this major statement, the renowned international-relations scholar John Mearsheimer argues that liberal hegemony, the foreign policy pursued by the United States since the Cold War ended, is doomed to fail. It makes far more sense, he maintains, for Washington to adopt a more restrained foreign policy based on a sound understanding of how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad.
It is widely believed in the West that the United States should spread liberal democracy across the world, foster an open international economy, and build institutions. This policy of remaking the world in America’s image is supposed to protect human rights, promote peace, and make the world safe for democracy. But this is not what has happened. Instead, the United States has ended up as a highly militarized state fighting wars that undermine peace, harm human rights, and threaten liberal values at home. Mearsheimer tells us why this has happened.

We also assume that people around the world fundamentally desire liberal democracy. Ain’t necessarily so.

Thanks for a great upload.

What a world we live in when a return to the Real Politik of war criminal Heinz Kissinger is the sanest option for the west right now, yet hopelessly removed from the current realm of post-truth group-think.

The fundamental delusion is that America is Liberal Democracy in the first place. It’s more of a …ummm… Marketing Republic? An economy primarily designed for businesses, a political system that is hugely biased towards incumbents and lobbyists, and an “opposition” whose only recourse is identity politics.
No wonder it’s a hard sell abroad.

And yet those American blighters have managed to hit upon some kind of system which operates as an enormous draw for people, globally.
Anti-democratic regimes around the world demonstrate a marked reluctance to change themselves. Although they do want economic success to accompany their obligatory genocidal ambitions & inclinations.
They also favour a “healthy” dose of permanent incumbency & gargantuan graft.

@caesar963. Gee, ya think? There are worse places than America… Who knew?

I suppose ya wouldn’t know coz peeps only ever talk abt…u guessed it. Mentioning the dystopias is what u might call “a hard sell abroad” - people react with hostility, for some unaccountable reason.
There was a book uploaded about one of these fragrant dystopias, & the usual suspects predictably arrived to heap the generic eye-swiveling condemnations upon the Great Satan.
Other comments which impertinently cited the actual subject of the book were angrily vilified for “derailing the discussion.”
Hoo noo?

@Cog. What country is as diverse and is better then the USA ?
March 31st, 2022
@idenn pretty much any real democracy that tries to avoid duopolies, regulatory capture by business, hugely unfair healthcare and education, market fetishism, a legislature that polls in the low teens, “executive privilege”, presidential pardons for cronies (WTF! So much for rule of law), partisan appointment of everything from elections oversight to the Supreme Court, corporations that are legally people in terms of rights (but not responsibilities), SuperPacs, the electoral college, Donald Trump etc. etc. So Canada, Most of western Europe, all of Scandinavia, isolated spots like Costa Rica and Bermuda, New Zealand etc. etc Take your pick. None is perfect, but they’re trying. Like I said, the U.S. is more of a market republic than a liberal democracy.

@caesar. I’m not sure what you’re getting at, but I’m certainly don’t think it’s the great satan. America is full of smart, honest, hardworking, though often gullible people who want the world to love them. Believing its system doesn’t live up to the hype or the marketing is not a blanket condemnation of all things American. But there are plenty of places in the world that I and many people would much rather live than the States, much to the surprise of many Americans. As for its vaunted diversity, isn’t that more an accident of history than the result of “Bring me your poor…yearning to be free”. Importing slaves and helping screw up Latin America is the source of much of that diversity. Along with send me your proven talent, yearning for lower taxes, of course. Besides Toronto is the most diverse city in the world, and London is a close second.
As for “fragrant dystopias” I hate them too. I don’t care how nice they smell, torture is torture! ;-)

Amazing. Finally THE most respected expert on the subject explains why we’re making a fatal mistake.

Okay, so if not “liberal hegemony”, what then? Just a raw power hegemony like the Good Old Days? The big powers build up their militaries and threaten or just invade their neighbours, like Russia now? Like China very likely will?
“Liberal hegemony” is the least worst option, compared to the jackboot hegemony.

USA do not have ANY right to impose themselves on other SOVEREIGN NATIONS. Liberal hegemony is absolute evil. Period.

Thank You.

Thank you. God Bless America.

Brilliant!
It’s the kind of thinking outlined in Mr. Mearsheimer’s book that caused the CCP to grow and become a global threat to peace.
The world had an opportunity to destroy Communism once and for all and, instead, we supported its growth
