The Case Against Free Speech: The First Amendment, Fascism, and the Future of Dissent - P.E. Moskowitz Audiobook
Shared by:hdgdf
A hard-hitting expose that shines a light on the powerful conservative forces that have waged a multi-decade battle to hijack the meaning of free speech–and how we can reclaim it.
There’s a critical debate taking place over one of our most treasured free speech. We argue about whether it’s at risk, whether college students fear it, whether neo-Nazis deserve it, and whether the government is adequately upholding it.
But as P. E. Moskowitz provocatively shows in The Case Against Free Speech , the term has been defined and redefined to suit those in power, and in recent years, it has been captured by the Right to push their agenda. What’s more, our investment in the First Amendment obscures an uncomfortable free speech is impossible in an unequal society where a few corporations and the ultra-wealthy bankroll political movements, millions of voters are disenfranchised, and our government routinely silences critics of racism and capitalism.
Weaving together history and reporting from Charlottesville, Skokie, Standing Rock, and the college campuses where student protests made national headlines, Moskowitz argues that these flash points reveal more about the state of our democracy than they do about who is allowed to say what.
Our current definition of free speech replicates power while dissuading dissent, but a new ideal is emerging. In this forcefully argued, necessary corrective, Moskowitz makes the case for speech as a tool–for exposing the truth, demanding equality, and fighting for all our civil liberties.

Truly remarkable, the unmasking intensifies.
Arguing that the other side is ruining our “democracy” and our “democratic” institutions so we want to take away their right to free speech.
and they should be allowed to determine who has “real” free speech and who doesn’t. Have we ever heard such insanity in this country?
The only way to save “our democracy” is to take away everyone’s democratic and natural rights—tear up the constitution or simply pick and choose which rights should apply, in which circumstances, and to who they should apply to.
That’s a very different interpretation of democracy is isn’t.
Are there people who are still unsure about what’s really going on?
These are sick and dangerous people.

russdada, are you saying you were not able to get the book’s primary argument from the summery?
Do you think that after reading the whole book we will somehow be okay with getting rid of the first amendment? Really?

Book burnings and censorship always start out with the greatest of intentions. I don’t have to read it to know it’s a @hitty idea. Kinda like Mein Kampf… I get the gist of it.

You do have to read it, as you’ve assumed the premise of the arguments based on the cover and title. Ya dangus.

“Arguing that the other side is ruining our “democracy” and our “democratic” institutions so we want to take away their right to free speech.”
Read “I don’t want to read the book I imagined in my own head”

I have read the book and it can be more or less summed up as “You disagree with me, so you forfeit your right to free speech”

Terrible book and terrible idea.
There is no ‘case against free speech’s unless your a wannabe authoritarian bastard who thinks you know better than everyone else. In which case, you’re wrong, and a POS.

“Conservative Forces” are jeopardizing free speech? I had to read the opening sentence twice. More projection from the fragile left. It is unambiguously clear this version of the “democratic” party will do anything to silence its critics. After all, the democrats have FDR and his war on the press as their blue print.
