Last time I checked, it was actually late 18th century, when a gang of right-wing radicals and power brokers and traditionalists a.k.a. “Founding Fathers” established this absolutely racist and intolerant country, it was so bad and horrible from the beginning that since that time literally everyone on Earth wants to come and live here — and the opposite is also true, no one seems to be in a hurry to relinquish his or her American citizenship and board the first plane, departing to one or another socialist paradise.

Any progress is radical to the right, they falsely believe society peaked in the mid 18th century, before the Founders created a liberal secular nation.
In the mid 19th centuries liberals had to literally fight to pull our nation forward again.
In the mid 20th centuries liberals again had pull the nation forward, this time no war.
Now in the 21st century we seem to be heading for another conflict.
The only silver lining is liberalism always wins in the West. The right is just a check valve on progress, never any new idea’s.

@ccreader You forgot to mention that somewhere along the way “progressives” (FDR and Co.) stole the terms “liberal” and “liberalism” from classic liberals, and helpfully re-brandished them into “conservatives” — since then it’s not exactly the same “liberals” and “liberalism”, rather their polar opposites.
