Well, phukkyou, the Castro family are estimated to have well over a billion dollars squirrelled away in offshore accounts and holdings. Stalin and the Politburo always lived incredibly lavish lifestyles, and were sequestered from the general population (with whom they were absolutely equal). Regular Russians were not allowed to approach, or speak to, the family members of elite communists. This was also the case in other communist systems and countries.
So, with Bernie being on that ideological continuum, I think zombie is pointing out this general contradiction between stated beliefs and actual lifestyle - and the pursuit of wealth by those who outwardly hate capitalism, inequality and great wealth disparities.
In addition, I don’t think it’s entirely fair to say people in factories and elsewhere are wasting their lives. All human life has dignity and value.

The majority of Sanders’ net worth came from an advance on a book he wrote. So he worked for his money. Yep.
Sanders believes in a certain amount of redistribution via progressive taxation, hardly radical, since the US has had progressive taxation for over 60 years, and the country had prospered during that time, that was until the income distribution became so concentrated (starting under Reagan and till the present) that 5 families in the US have more combined wealth than the lower 50% of the US population.
He has the not-so radical idea of noblesse oblige. It’s not like he’s trying to tear up the Constitution, just believes that those at the top have a responsibility towards those less fortunate financially, to allow them to better themselves through things like subsidized higher education.
I could go on, but people often choose to make inflammatory statements because it is more fun and less effort than making reasoned arguments based on informed discussion. Nevertheless, hope springs eternal that all these books posted here will somehow inform and educate us.

SSafe, you’re correct, the US does have a progressive tax system, but it’s joke in the top 1% end up paying less in percentage of income than the average middle class person pays.
The system should be eliminated and a flat tax of X% on ALL income over Y $$$’s should be installed in it’s place. Also, social security and medi-care taxes should be charged on passive and active income.
I don’t believe that because someone is rich and can afford it should be required to pay more in taxes, just that they shouldn’t be allowed to less because they are rich.
As for Sanders politics, he’s got a tough sell saying education should be free. Too many generations will ask “Why should I pay for your education when I had to pay for my own?” Its a fair question.
As for Sanders one payer health care system, great idea. Have the US government become responsible for medical insurance and cut out the 25%-30% profits made by the insurance companies. Then again, the US’s efficiency history in running operations isn’t exactly impressive, ie: The US Postal System or it’s military. Not exactly examples of efficient operations.
Sanders, like most politicians isn’t worthy of the office though, because if he had been doing his job for the last 30 years, our country probably wouldn’t be so messed up!

With capital flight and the myriad avoidance mechanisms, isn’t it always the beleaguered middle that ends up being burdened with all of the taxes and costs? And these social programmes always balloon in cost as a result of overrun, expansion, ludicrous inefficiency and initial (calculated) underestimation.
Putting further obligations on the most financially stressed cohort would prove intolerable. Especially given that the quality of education, healthcare, etc. to be funded, would not come with appropriate, reliable guarantees. Paying more for less is a difficult sell to any electorate.
Realistically, inefficient systems rarely, if ever, reform themselves.

Before becoming The Bern, Sanders was among the bottom fifth of congress in terms of wealth. His net worth in 2014 was $160K. Look it up. He spent his life fighting for working people. He’s trying to get his message out, and people are willing to pay to hear it. So now he has more money, but it’s almost beside the point for him. But sure, listen to the corporate propaganda claims that he’s a hypocrite and don’t bother to think for yourself.
