Michael Shellenberger has been fighting for a greener planet for decades. He helped save the world’s last unprotected redwoods. He co-created the predecessor to today’s Green New Deal. And he led a successful effort by climate scientists and activists to keep nuclear plants operating, preventing a spike of emissions.
But in 2019, as some claimed “billions of people are going to die,” contributing to rising anxiety, including among adolescents, Shellenberger decided that, as a lifelong environmental activist, leading energy expert, and father of a teenage daughter, he needed to speak out to separate science from fiction.
Despite decades of news media attention, many remain ignorant of basic facts. Carbon emissions peaked and have been declining in most developed nations for over a decade. Deaths from extreme weather, even in poor nations, declined 80 percent over the last four decades. And the risk of Earth warming to very high temperatures is increasingly unlikely thanks to slowing population growth and abundant natural gas.
Curiously, the people who are the most alarmist about the problems also tend to oppose the obvious solutions.
What’s really behind the rise of apocalyptic environmentalism? There are powerful financial interests. There are desires for status and power. But most of all there is a desire among supposedly secular people for transcendence. This spiritual impulse can be natural and healthy. But in preaching fear without love, and guilt without redemption, the new religion is failing to satisfy our deepest psychological and existential needs.

Thank you Sir!

Well that’s deceptive. Carbon emissions declined in most countries not because we’re burning less carbon overall but because almost all manufacturing has been moved to just a few countries. So while, yes, carbon emissions have declined in most countries, we’re still burning more carbon overall it’s just that we’re doing in overwhelmingly in China, India and the wee Asian countries like Vietnam.
While I don’t support climate alarmism, looking out my window at the smoke filled blood red sky… yeah.

erouting got a link to this data?
You are either lying like Shill-berger (nuclear industry) or ignorant.
There has been a modest reduction in emissions since Covid which has the same effect on slowing climate change as putting a bandaid on a point blank shot gun wound.
It’s too late. The only question now is when will the consequences break society & extinct or die-back the humans.
How many records need to be smashed to hell for y’all to clue in? Most will cling to their denial until death.
– ““A record amount of California is burning, spurred by a nearly 20-year mega-drought. To the north, parts of Oregon that don’t usually catch fire are in flames.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic’s 16th and 17th named tropical storms are swirling, a record number for this time of year. Powerful Typhoon Haishen lashed Japan and the Korean Peninsula this week. Last month it hit 130 degrees in Death Valley, the hottest Earth has been in nearly a century.
Phoenix keeps setting triple-digit heat records, while Colorado went through a weather whiplash of 90-degree heat to snow this week. Siberia, famous for its icy climate, hit 100 degrees earlier this year, accompanied by wildfires. Before that Australia and the Amazon were in flames.
Amid all that, Iowa’s derecho — bizarre straight-line winds that got as powerful as a major hurricane, causing billions of dollars in damages — barely went noticed.”

Almost everything predicted has come to pass. The only major error was the timing - faster than expect.

Agree with Gweilo and apnea.
Climate denying is a crime against life.

Has nothing to do with climate denying. And apnea is a virulant mouth breather who does nothing but spread his facist ideology and hate speech on this site in almost every comment he makes. Who clearly lacks the ability to think logically. None of the things he mentioned has anything do with, or is proof, of anything he claims it is. He acts like its the clear fulfillment of everything crazy climate alarmist have been saying, its not. Its also cherry picking data from specific areas. No one is saying climate doesnt change, of course it does. Not even saying humans dont effect the environment, of course they do. But this climate extremism is utter nonsense. Too late? What garbage, not even climate experts agree with the extremist claims that people like Thunberg make, which inspired the guy to right the book in the first place. There is a big difference between being concerned for the environment, pollution, etc..and thinking there is some sort of impending disaster that is going to destroy everything. There is zero evidence to think that, not even in the climate change world. There are not any peer reviewed papers that support the kind of alarm-ism he is speaking out again. Go get an education from a non third world dump and come back later

Has everythgn to do wht “climate denying”.
“There are powerful financial interests.” Right. Not the Koch brothers and the trillions in fossil fuel profits that ignoring the problem enables for a few more years.
“extremist…extremist… extremist….”
50 years ago, we were warned, and then the oil companies took note and shut down any response. Now it IS an emergency.

Scientific culture is naturally reserved and reticent.
Outcomes in climate science have aligned with worst case scenarios projected decades ago. Perhaps you haven’t burned, flooded, starved or died from heat stress yet. But the worst case scenario that the world is still tracing offers all of the above and more for those young enough to live to the end of this century.
I’d recommend Mark Lynas, David Wallace-Wells, and Bill McKibben over this twaddle.

It is healthy for the climate debate to find strong opposition. This doesn’t mean denial, just educated skepticism.
