The surprising story of Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and the scrappy band of rebel men and women who followed them.
Most people are familiar with the basics of the Cuban Revolution of 1956-1959: it was led by two of the 20th century’s most charismatic figures, Fidel Castro and Che Guevara; it successfully overthrew the island nation’s US-backed dictator; and it quickly went awry under Fidel’s rule.
But less is remembered about the amateur nature of the movement or the lives of its players. In this wildly entertaining and meticulously researched account, historian and journalist Tony Perrottet unravels the human drama behind history’s most improbable revolution: a scruffy handful of self-taught revolutionaries - many of them kids just out of college, literature majors, and art students, and including a number of extraordinary women - who defeated 40,000 professional soldiers to overthrow the dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista.
Cuba Libre!’s deep dive into the revolution reveals fascinating details: How did Fidel’s highly organized lover Celia Sánchez whip the male guerrillas into shape? Who were the two dozen American volunteers who joined the Cuban rebels? How do you make lethal land mines from condensed milk cans - or, for that matter, cook chorizo à la guerrilla (sausage guerrilla-style)?
Cuba Libre! is an absorbing look back at a liberation movement that captured the world’s imagination with its spectacular drama, foolhardy bravery, tragedy, and, sometimes, high comedy - and that set the stage for Cold War tensions that pushed the world to the brink of nuclear war.

A “light” look at Castro and Che? Seriously? When are we getting the written copy of “Springtime For Hitler In Germany?” posted? “Jolly Times At Jonestown”? This is a “progressively” odder and odder world in which we live.

daenigma100, would you be so kind as to consider re-seeding Alt-America: The Rise of the Radical Right in the Age of Trump - David Neiwert.
Greatly appreciated.

They look so friendly on the cover! Che Guevara used to murder parents in front of their children, in order to strike terror into potential opponents and subdue resistance.
Castro imprisoned dissidents without trial and, amongst myriad tortures, forced them to eat their own faeces.
And then there’s that awkward bit about forcing gay people and those with HIV/AIDS into concentration camps.

Let me guess, Cuba was so much better when Batiste was in power? Lol

As this not a MAGA-approved history book, we have the usual suspects posting the usual random talking points triggered by a word in the title, with little or no relevance to the topic of the book.

So, let me get this straight, I’m the only one who has a problem with concentration camps (even if you happen to weirdly like the murderous regime which ran them)? It takes a particular character type to find such crimes “impertinent”. Our commentary must be based on an incisive, balanced assessment of the historical record, not fatuous wishful thinking. Or an even more sinister attempt to bury the facts. Far too much of that going on.
Or we could just attack the messenger. That might work.

“Change is the only constant”, and as long as inequality presists, humanity will continue to struggle and change towards an egalitarian society.
-An idea paraphrased from Marx
And every socialist regimes in the world had attempted just that.

People who champion “free market” capitalism have come to steal their free books. You couldn’t make it up.

Another Libtard-approved manifesto of the value of genocide to get your way when you can’t accept the fact that everyone else has grown up around you, and you’re still sitting in the sandbox, pissing your pants.

Castro’s Net worth at the time of his death (couldn’t happen sooner, unfortunately) was over 1 Billion Dollars! Not a very good Socialist, was he? Yet, his people were/are starving to death.
Maybe Michael Moore could go there and have the populous eat him. Should feed a family of 4 for at least a month.

“People who champion “free market” capitalism have come to steal their free books. You couldn’t make it up.”
It is because of capitalism NOT despite of it that the flow of information is made readily available across the globe via the internet. As for the copyright holder/author/and publisher: none lose commerce or profit as a result of digital loans, which is a common practice among major public and university libraries. The audio-book-bay is an alternate venue for the digital distribution of information. That’s not anti-capitalist. That’s the epitome of capitalism. And example of anti-capitalism is a communist hell-hole like North Korea that censors information and forcibly keeps its people ignorant of the outside world.
