Good one (but I think the claims made for the affair are disproportionate; the war against the Soviets in Afghanistan, and the conflict in the former Yugoslavia led to the hyper-radicalised Islam we see today). Thanks, enigma.

It is unfathomable how some people (some historians in particular) build a story by amassing a series of coincidental events, establishing correlations and inferring some relations arbitrarily. Whereas a correlation is not a relation, a great deal of inducement came from the American intelligence creation and support for the Afghan Mujahideen in their war against the Soviet Union 1978-1989, on one hand, and from the Iranian Revolution in 1978-79, on the other. Rushdie was no more than an instrument or, if one is so keen on causality, an “efficient” cause in the Aristotelian sense.
