Too often, we are told that plays a weak hand well. But, perhaps the nation’s cards are better than we know. Russia ranks behind the US and China by traditional measures of power: GDP, population size and health, and military might. Yet twenty-five years removed from its mid-1990s nadir following the collapse of the USSR, Russia has become a supremely disruptive force in world politics. Kathryn E. Stoner assesses the resurrection of Russia and argues that we should look beyond traditional means of power to assess its strength in global affairs.
From Russia’s seizure of the Crimea from Ukraine to its military support for the Assad regime in Syria, the country has reasserted itself as a major global power. Stoner examines these developments and more in tackling the big questions about Russia’s turnaround and global future. Stoner marshals data on Russia’s political, economic, and social development and uncovers key insights from its domestic politics. Vladimir Putin’s autocratic regime faces virtually no organized domestic opposition. Yet, Russia under Putin also uses its varied power capacities to extend its influence abroad. Russia Resurrected is an eye-opening reassessment of the country, identifying the actual sources of its power in international politics and why it has been able to redefine the post-Cold War global order.

Putin sure is making Biden look like a Jack@ss. Yeah, I know…that does not take much.

The West’s obsession with Putin is infinitely more interesting than the man himself. Why doesn’t anyone write a book about that?

Russia’s purpose in the new order seems to be to demonstrate how old hat it imagines human rights, democracy & the territorial sovereignty of other nations to be.

Thank you kindly

@sable - You’re an ar$e. Then again, as Biden may be the last decent POTUS, everyone and their deranged uncle will make you look a jacka$$. Have a nice whatever.

The losses of the Russian forces in Ukraine show that Russia can be a global power only if the West allows it. The developed Western countries are superior in weaponry and military organization. Their only weakness was exchange of geopolitical priorities on economic ones, but they’re already improving and adapting to new reality.

Lots of illusions on display here. And how dispiriting to see so many parrotting the views their media keeps shoving down their throats. Biden decent -he’s not even conscious, let alone adequate - and Russia losing in Ukraine. Surprised nobody’s yet trotted out their ‘Putin and his blood-soaked cronies’ cliche. Again.
But don’t listen to this book. Just criticise what you think it is.

Great comedy, they’re getting their butts handed to them by tiny Ukraine, most of russia’s bombs and equipment don’t even work as little putin runs out of money to fund the war he started to make up for his midget frame and small dinky.

Indeed, the pussbag Putin and his blood-soaked cronies. Not merely bloody, of course, but filthy rich with people’s money & resources.
Naturally, it’s always open to unthinking Putinistas to parrot all the Russian state media justifications for an unnecessary war & massive human rights violations. If it wasn’t such a serious subject, we could all giggle at the clumsy flailings of such a pitiful actor.
As the noble crimson observed, why must the world suffer for the decidedly personal tragedy of an agent being afflicted with a negligible KGB dinky?

Hilarious. I know your’re fond of overwriting to no purpose and if I were half as ego driven as you I could fill a page with the names of countries whose innate sovereignty the blameless USA has violated. It would make no difference. You’d only cut and paste five pages of partisan quotes to support your response.
I have given my opinion. You have given the one others have fed you. Try thinking for yourself.

Most Americans have no clue of what is really going on in the world. The Russians have only pushed their little toe into Ukraine and they have already won. the mainstream media will tell you the truth in 6 months.

Correction: you’ve given the standard “free” Russian media opinion. Fact-free, as is their/your wont.
Do you imagine that American invasions absolve Russian crimes? How does that work?

Nah, brad. The potential of Russian arms did cause anxiety - prior to the revelations offered by the current conflict. Now that anxiety has been replaced by bemusement: why did they err by so catastrophically revealing their hand? Deception & cyber-meddling may have served them better. Also, Russians only have access to state propaganda, unfortunately. That’s the view from old Europe, at any rate.

brad’s comment aged like milk haha

Haha, sheer stupidity cumulated in this book is incomprehensible!

Russias military equipment is outdated, poorly maintained, and the operators are given nearly enough training time to make up for these deficiencies. China has already backed out of orders it had placed for Russian bombers, fighter jets, tanks and personal carriers due to their obvious inferiority of western tech. Russia itself won’t allow their Su-57 stealth fighters to enter Ukrainian airspace due to the potential embarrassnebt should it will be shot down, and that the west would get a hole of the wreckage.
