Publisher’s Summary
Lombard Street by Walter Bagehot is a description of the money market, published in 1873. Bagehot was one of the first writers to describe and explain the world of international and corporate finance, banking, and money in understandable language. This book was in part a reaction to the 1866 collapse of Overend, Gurney and Company, located at 65 Lombard Street, from which comes the title.

‘Lombard Street’ is a pleasure to read, and when I first read it I was introduced to some basic ideas that have stuck with me over the years. But it is very much a document of its time, a time when London was the fount of the world’s credit, and the Bank of England the bulwark of world economic stability. The world has moved on, and while the book remains attractive, it is very much a period piece.

The editorial section of The Economist’s Finance and Economics is called Bagehot (of course, penned by someone else now) so I thought I’d find out what this guy said. Oh yeah, he was also the first editor of the Economist.
