When this was published in 1964 the meaning of liberal and conservative was quite different from what they mean today. The supreme irony of this book is that it only makes sense if you substitute “right winger” or “Fox News conservative” for ‘liberal’.

The nomenclature alteration was a US thing, & took place earlier (gathered force w FDR admin, to substitute for “statist,” or anything of the negative like).
Proper meaning of liberal is still current (as in “liberal democracy”), in its appropriate political designation.
It historically & usefully denotes individual rights, democratic liberties, consent of the governed, constant vigilance, the rule of law, a market-based system, the restriction of tyrannical state power & associated abuses, fundamental human rights, etc.
It’s the only successful, civilised polit system, all other ideological regimes collapsing into predictable, catastrophic failure. (The extreme, genocidal ideologies of nat socialism, socialism, fascism, Marxism, etc. declared liberal democ entirely dead in the 20s/30s - then history & reality intervened to kick this associated continuum of murderous ideology in its uniformed ass. Yeah, baby.)

Just to say: constitutional, bounded governance is another characteristic of our liberal democratic tradition.
And to bring it up to date, in an echo of 1920s/30s, Putin has hopefully declared this liberal democ trad to be “obsolete.”
Of course, Russians like himself have serious beef w lib democ, with them having embarked upon a humiliating, ludicrous, ideological experiment which utterly failed - in the most public way (but not before committing several genocides, a brutal imperial project & the political enslaving of many millions of peoples). Now they’re back to imperialism, terror, barbaric invasions, war, poisoning yet more developing minds, creating more cannon fodder, the enslaving of populations, genocide, societal injustice, torture, etc. etc.
So, naturally they bitterly oppose the polit system which actually works & which defeated them before.
Just as in the 1930s, the abandonment of liberal democracy in the West would indeed be suicide.
