This first-person chronicle by John Reed, a legendary journalist who was present at the flash point of the Russian Revolution in 1917, provides an intense and informative eyewitness account of one of the greatest events of the twentieth century.
Capturing the spirit of those heady days of excitement and idealism, Reed’s true-to-life account follows many of the prominent Bolshevik leaders, as well as vividly capturing the mood of the masses. Verbatim reports of speeches by leaders, and comments of bystanders — set against an idealized backdrop of the proletariat united with soldiers, sailors, and peasants — are balanced by passionate narratives describing the fall of the provisional government, the assault on the Winter Palace, and Lenin’s seizure of power.
This gripping record by a western journalist has been acclaimed worldwide since its first publication in 1919. Endorsed by Lenin as a “truthful and most vivid exposition,” the work was the basis for the Academy Award-winning 1981 film Reds.

When reading Ten Days That Shook the World, it’s vitally important to remember that you are reading the work of a dedicated revolutionary. It is an important account but a one-sided one, and it should not be taken as a work of objective history.
Also, it’s important to remember the consequences of the revolution, the vast crimes against humanity which the Bolsheviks perpetrated. The tens of millions of innocent people deliberately starved, worked to death in the arctic circle, or anonymously shot in basements and dark forests. The destruction of a Russian culture that stretched back many hundreds of years, the enslavement of the proud peoples of Eastern Europe, and the worldwide spread of a revolution that lead directly to the unimaginable crimes of Mao, Pol Pot, and a hundred imitators.
Reed and his fellow travelers claimed to serve the interests of the proletariat, yet they instituted a regime infinitely more brutal than the one they deposed. Happy feelings, poetic words about love for humanity, and good intentions do not justify the scourge these people unleashed on the world.

@YoungDonDraper:
Spoken like a True Believer in the default capitalist ideology all of us are trained in and told to accept. We need conscious rejection of such revisionist histories and an open mind to the fact that though the capitalist class might be winning currently that doesn’t solidify history to what they claim it to be.

Funny that this book was banned in the Soviet Union after Lenin’s death despite the fact that he himself wrote the introduction

@Zack: How is it a revisionist history if it was written as the events unfolded?

Irritating that this is from Librivox and not labeled as such.
