A political philosophy which wants to maintain the status quo, wealthy people have all the power. What is odd is the country was founded by progressives, had they been conservative we would still be singing god save the king.

Well, no. The American revolution was a conservative revolution. They wished to separate from an imperial power, rather than radically alter the very fabric of society. There was no “Year Zero” in the American context. This is probably the explanation for its long-term success - its creation of a stable polity (the Irish revolution was also of the conservative variety). Extreme revolutions - of the left & right - have all failed catastrophically, as we know.
As to conservatism as political philosophy, it’s about the Burkean principle of evolution rather than revolution. Clearly, this does not mean “no change.” It encompasses traditional values - essentially what has been tested & proven to work over time. And what no longer works is then discarded. Society & culture are far too complex to be expressed (or even weaponised) in simplistic, reductive theories.
