“The Uninhabitable Earth hits you like a comet, with an overflow of insanely lyrical prose about our pending Armageddon.” (Andrew Solomon, author of The Noonday Demon)
It is worse, much worse, than you think. If your anxiety about global warming is dominated by fears of sea-level rise, you are barely scratching the surface of what terrors are possible. In California, wildfires now rage year-round, destroying thousands of homes. Across the US, “500-year” storms pummel communities month after month, and floods displace tens of millions annually.
This is only a preview of the changes to come. And they are coming fast. Without a revolution in how billions of humans conduct their lives, parts of the Earth could become close to uninhabitable, and other parts horrifically inhospitable, as soon as the end of this century.
In his travelogue of our near future, David Wallace-Wells brings into stark relief the climate troubles that await - food shortages, refugee emergencies, and other crises that will reshape the globe. But the world will be remade by warming in more profound ways as well, transforming our politics, our culture, our relationship to technology, and our sense of history. It will be all-encompassing, shaping and distorting nearly every aspect of human life as it is lived today.
Like An Inconvenient Truth and Silent Spring before it, The Uninhabitable Earth is both a meditation on the devastation we have brought upon ourselves and an impassioned call to action. For just as the world was brought to the brink of catastrophe within the span of a lifetime, the responsibility to avoid it now belongs to a single generation.

It’s all true! And we should be afraid! Not individually, but as a species.
Because the earth WILL BECOME UNINHABITABLE some time after 5 BILLION years from now when the sun starts expanding!
So make sure the 50-millionth generation of humans after you starts preparing for it!

At this point in time, you have to be a colossal half-wit to fail to see the damage humanity has wrought in the last 100 years or so. Sadly, I think we’ve passed the tipping point. It’s already game over for us.

Socialism is always a solution in search of a problem. Global warming and income inequality are the problems du jour. The book explains why we really need to turn everything into the hands of university professors who teach journalism.

Hail Darwin, full of grace.
For the ignorant and unwashed masses deemed to go against the will of Science. So in it’s wroth Science gave it’s ministers prophecies of the fire and brimstone to come, so that the kings and magistrates should empty their coffers to the houses of Science, that the will of Science be done.
Hail Darwin, full of grace.
Hail Darwin, full of grace.

Just went through the kind of storm that used to happen once during a summer: this is the third such in the last two weeks, with more projected by the weekend. Local damage, highway flooding, tornado warnings. THIS IS NOT NORMAL.

@CAG. Here in Louisville KY. It’s been to cold to swim. One thing normal about weather here is that there isn’t a normal. Climate is always changing.
I consider myself an environmentalist. I take direct action to protect it. I plant a tree where ever there is a spot. I have been known to even plant trees on property that isn’t my own. Hard core I know lol. The point is, talk is cheap and protests do nothing but leave garbage in it’s wake. Grab a bag and fill it with litter you find around your neighborhood. Call your states Dept or natural resources and see if they have a program where you can buy sapling trees, can get like 50 pine trees for 20.00 or something like that in my state, and plant them. Be militant and plant them everywhere. Make an urban forest. If you do that others will follow. Soon this takes care of itself. Warming isn’t the issue, we want the globe warm, warmth is life. What you don’t want is global cooling. That’s the dieing time.

I feel sorry for those who don’t have mental capacity accept the coming crisis. You are the first to perish.

Imagine being so triggered by climate change that you have to go online and review a book that you haven’t read!

naysayers: there is no fire, there is no heat, nothing is dry!
the rest of us: mmmkay.
couple decades later:
naysayers: feck, i’m hungry and thirsty.. can I come in? please?
the rest of us: mmmmm…. mmmmkay.

Of course global warming is real. The acidity levels in the oceans are rising, killing fish. Wetlands are drying out in many countries, and where they were they now experience brushfires that have no buisness burning there. Many nay-sayers like to point out a particular cold week, or a bad ice storm as proof global warming isnt real. The thing is that they dont know the difference between weather and climate, which is sad, but not a major problem. The problem begins when the “leader” of the country that releases the largest amount of fossil fuels into the atmosphere doesnt know the difference, and because he doesnt know what hes talking about, and has a profitable stake in the continued use of fossil fuels pulls out of the worlds largest international initiative to reduce emissions do to his greed and ignorance when the overwhelming majority of the world knows better. And he wonders why the leaders of Europe, Canada and Asia mock him ruthlessly.
