In a witty, irreverent op-ed piece that went viral, Kristen Ghodsee argued that women had better sex under socialism. The response was tremendous — clearly she articulated something many women had sensed for years: the problem is with capitalism, not with us.
Ghodsee, an acclaimed ethnographer and professor of Russian and East European Studies, spent years researching what happened to women in countries that transitioned from state socialism to capitalism. She argues here that unregulated capitalism disproportionately harms women, and that we should learn from the past. By rejecting the bad and salvaging the good, we can adapt some socialist ideas to the 21st century and improve our lives.
She tackles all aspects of a woman’s life - work, parenting, sex and relationships, citizenship, and leadership. In a chapter called “Women: Like Men, But Cheaper,” she talks about women in the workplace, discussing everything from the wage gap to harassment and discrimination. In “What To Expect When You’re Expecting Exploitation,” she addresses motherhood and how “having it all” is impossible under capitalism.
Women are standing up for themselves like never before, from the increase in the number of women running for office to the women’s march to the long-overdue public outcry against sexual harassment. Interest in socialism is also on the rise - whether it’s the popularity of Bernie Sanders or the skyrocketing membership numbers of the Democratic Socialists of America. It’s become increasingly clear to women that capitalism isn’t working for us, and Ghodsee is the informed, lively guide who can show us the way forward.

Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism?
Because they have sex for food.

I thought the [FIXED] meant the fallacies in the book were corrected. Never mind.

So, so stupid. Just. Wow. The stupidest crap.

Political Audiobook - where people come to get angry over the titles of books they’ll never read.

An indispensable text in the current climate, and genuinely funny.
The one positive thing about demagogues is that in the long term they can’t survive being laughed at. The Great Dictator just wasn’t funny in Germany (though there were calls to ban it in the UK as well).

@DouglasPouch - Thank you for the laugh this morning! Minor correction with audiobooks it’s books they’ll never listen to.
Personally, I didn’t know women having better sex under socialism needed to be fixed. I would have thought that maybe we should fix the problems the women under capitalist societies are having.
Then again, it sounds like a personal problem to me, and perhaps they’re just doing it wrong (or not enough). :-)

Don’t women actually DIE at a greater rate under socialism? Is this just a continuum; from “la petite morte” to just “morte”?

Sure thing, it is so wonderful to spend your entire life in a cage, being told by evil psychopaths what you can and can’t do … and a special icing on top of that cake, being told that simply by virtue of helplessly sitting there you have “better sex”, or better anything.

Excellent wordplay, sock puppet.
@pryderi - Good point about satire. But one reservation, under Weimar the political satire within the ‘Kabarett’ and elsewhere was exceptionally savage, with no restrictions on expression. Unfortunately, all the brutal mockery failed to prevent the rise of Nazism. Of course, it was still crucial to make that courageous stand. Although, it’s difficult and dangerous to extend the analogy of fascism too far, it was a very specific historical moment.

Socialism is literally the opposite of economic independence. What is this book trying to pull?

Boys, boys, boys!
A woman wrote this for other women.
It’s beyond your understanding.
Don’t try, you might injure yourselves.

Communism does not equal socialism. No matter how much you might want it to

3 stars for the first half; 5 stars for the second half. This book leaves a lot out but did have its great moments.

lmao I love all the chuds in the comment section here that refuse to engage with the actual arguments or thought put forward in the book
