The reign of Big Tech is here, and Americans’ First Amendment rights hang by a keystroke.
Amassing unimaginable amounts of personal data, giants like Google, Facebook, Amazon, and Apple - once symbols of American ingenuity and freedom - have become a techno-oligarchy with overwhelming economic and political power.
Decades of unchecked data collection have given Big Tech more targeted control over Americans’ daily lives than any company or government in the world. In The Tyranny of Big Tech, Senator Josh Hawley of Missouri argues that these mega-corporations - controlled by the robber barons of the modern era - are the gravest threat to American liberty in decades.
To reverse course, Hawley argues, we must correct progressives’ mistakes of the past. That means recovering the link between liberty and democratic participation, building an economy that makes the working class strong, independent, and beholden to no one, and curbing the influence of corporate and political elites.
Big Tech and its allies do not deal gently with those who cross them, and Senator Hawley proudly bears his own battle scars. But hubris is dangerous. The time is ripe to overcome the tyranny of Big Tech by reshaping the business and legal landscape of the digital world.

Sentient foreskin Josh Hawley
May 5th, 2021
Aren’t all foreskins, construed in that wonderful sense, sentient (fr the Lat sentient- ‘feeling’, fr the verb sentire.)?

hot garbage

Hawley was the only senator to vote no on the anti-hate crime bill, and has been vocally anti-democracy since the capital riot. he’s blatantly, openly evil. no one in their right mind should trust a word that comes out of his mouth

Always a bunch of whiny commies in the comments on those rare occasions something vaguely right wing gets posted. Nice to see them out in force here defending their corporate overlords, they never disappoint.

I don’t see anyone in here caping up for big tech; all I see is you caping up for a racist, sentient foreskin. Not that you have any morals to appeal to, but, that says a lot about you. Enjoy the sad, angry remainder of your reactionary life raging into a yawning void about why your circumstances feel more and more out of your control by the year; sounds super fulfilling.

I think “control” is illusory. We can only react to our circumstances. Seeking to shape them is like trying to pick up mercury with a fork.
This is why we should develop & practice detachment as a virtue. And yes, foreskins tend to be sentient. Never chop off your fireman.

Putting the authors politics aside for the moment, he does make a legitimate point.
Rod Sterling opening quote from The Outer Limits said it best…
“There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur, or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: There is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to… The Outer Limits.”
Be it big tech companies or the media, both influence how you are supposed to think, what you buy, and what you do. And if you believe they are doing it good of humanity, you really haven’t given it enough thought.

INSURRECTIONIST! Hawley should be placed under arrest. SEDITIONIST!

@totallydisenfranchised, that was “control voice”, AKA Vic Perrin. AFAIK, Serling had no role in the outer limits. But otherwise, point taken.

The Second Coming
BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS
Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

@TotallyDisenfranchised - Rod Serling didn’t do the Outer Limits. The series he hosted were The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery.

Thanks folks for the correction.

@illodiini - Just as there should be no fighting in the War Room, a book site is no place for literature.
-”This is just like that Twilight Zone where the guy wakes up the same and everybody’s different!”
-”Which one?”
-”They were all like that…”

He’s not exactly breaking new ground here, plenty of more credible people have been talking about tech consolidation and monopoly in general for decades and anyone who believes Hawley values free speech for anyone outside his set, I’ve got a bridge to sell you

@caesar - I likes pottery. And I’ve been itching to use that particular piece of art for some time now.

Bad corporate elites: Big Tech
Good corporate elites: Murdoch, the Koch brothers,
Trump, landlords; lets give them big tax cuts.

Guest… Someone’s at least smart enough to not want to be attached to this garbage…

It’s always nice to see comments from triggered liberal cucks…

The comments on this are a very good gauge of where people are getting their opinions from. I say opinions, rather than news, as you clearly demonstrate the inability to think for yourselves. You simply regurgitate what you heard in last night’s sound byte. I suspect that we are all glad for the anonymity provided by ABB, as most of you wouldn’t last five minutes running your mouths like you do in the real world. Beta cucks, indeed.
May 6th, 2021
Yes, well, I’ve been running my mouth since my first primal scream of disappointment. Excluding couple of times in my misspent youth, when my pretty face was in a real danger of renovation, I’ve been able to get away with everything. Fair amount of my life has been without social media or even internet, so I know what I’m talking about. Then again I try to keep company that is able to communicate with more than grunts.
The thing nowadays is that most of the people think they and their so-called opinion is somehow relevant to society. Most of the times it’s not. It’s a drop of spit in the ocean and usually just muddle things up. It is, however, as important as anyone else’s.
But I digress. The main thing about this here conversation is that the Americans are mostly bloody stupid and can’t handle sarcasm or humor well, or at all.

Thank you very much Sir.

Mr. Hawley hits the bullseye!
Big Tech is in reality Big Brother. The Axis of Evil (The Democrats, MSM and Big Tech) are the real dangers to our Freedoms.
May 7th, 2021
Insanely hypocritical how the Republicans whine about being cancelled, about how Big Tech censors them when they have the loudest voices. Fox is the most popular cable network. And this twat gets unlimited screentime to promote his book, being sold on Amazon, who no doubt he hates because of Bezos, and promotes it on Tw1tter, and Facebook which he also complains about despite Zuckerberg’s hands off to Trump’s BS being a major reason Trump got elected.
Hawley had a 30 minute interview on Youtube (owned by Google) with Washington Post to promote this book. He was bitching about how he was being censored by the people who were at that time GIVING HIM A PLATFORM … reality has no meaning in their world. But the MAGAs really don’t care how insane and contradictory he or Trump or the Qanons are, they just want a pretext to hate.

Hawley is the BEST! Keep America Great!

@fungus60 - and we’re so happy! Though it’s quite platonic. I’m sure some find you attractive, too! Worms and such.
May 20th, 2021
No idea how I missed this book the first time it was posted on ABB and later posted a duplicate, sorry about that.

There are men, in all ages, who mean to exercise power usefully; but they mean to exercise it. They mean to govern well; but they mean to govern. They promise to be kind masters; but they mean to be masters. They think there need be but little restraint upon themselves. Their notion of the public interest is apt to be quite closely connected with their own exercise of authority. They may not, indeed, always understand their own motives. The love of power may sink too deep in their own hearts even for their own scrutiny, and may pass with themselves for mere patriotism and benevolence.
