A spellbinding work of history that reads like a Cold War spy thriller—about the US-sanctioned plot to assassinate the democratically elected leader of the newly independent Congo
It was supposed to be a moment of great optimism, a cause for jubilation. Congo was at last being set free from Belgium—one of seventeen countries to gain independence in 1960 from ruling European powers. Just days after the handover, however, Congo’s new army mutinied, Belgian forces intervened, and its leader Patrice Lumumba turned to the United Nations for help in saving his newborn nation from what the press was already calling “the Congo Crisis.” Dag Hammarskjold, the tidy Swede who was serving as UN secretary-general, quickly arranged the organization’s biggest peacekeeping mission to date. But chaos was still spreading. Frustrated with the fecklessness of the UN, Lumumba then approached the Soviets for help—an appeal that set off alarm bells at the CIA. To forestall the spread of communism in Africa, the US sent word to the CIA station chief in Leopoldville, Larry Devlin: Lumumba had to go.
Within a year, everything would unravel. The CIA plot to murder Lumumba would fizzle, but he would be deposed in a CIA-backed coup and shot dead by Congolese assassins. Hammarskjold, too, would die, in a mysterious plane crash, en route to negotiate a ceasefire with Congo’s rebellious southeast. And a young, ambitious military officer named Joseph Mobutu, who had once sworn fealty to Lumumba, would seize power in Congo with U.S. help and misrule the country for more than three decades. For the Congolese people, the events of 1960–61 represented the opening chapter of a long horror story. For the U.S. government, however, they provided a playbook for future interventions.

Eisenhower adored dictators:- Mobutu, Nasser, Armas, Pahlavi …. couldn’t get enough of them.
Thank goodness Republican presidents aren’t like that anymore.

Didn’t every government - everywhere - make accommodations with despotic regimes? Or even worse than that. UK govts, in recent history, essentially operated an apartheid state in the Six Counties. UK govts also operated concentration camps - both before & after the national socialists. Your ability to preach on this is fatally flawed & afflicted with brutal irony, of which you’re oblivious. Moreover, your own positions on genocide denial & racist bigotry render you the worst possible advocate.
Also, on Nasser: Suez?

The US (CIA) and the Belgian armed forces are absolutely responsible for the assassination of Lumumba. This is documented fact.
Whataboutery is not necessary

Thanks for the upload.
The CIA has been getting away with this kind of thing for decades, killing unsympathetic leaders, overthrowing regimes that don’t or won’t subscribe to US hegemony. And when it can, blaming it on other countries.
For The Narcissist, user name caesar963, deciding what is genocide and what is not, and therefore who and who not to call ‘genocide denier’, is a simple matter. Requiring no intellect at all.
What Washington says is genocide, is genocide. What other countries call genocide is propaganda.

@ten - Accepted that it’s not specific to this particular case, but in terms of commentary, this one goes to character.
Also, on intervention into Africa (which also engaged the Soviets, causing even greater suffering in the continent) - Patrice Lumumba was assassinated in 1961; the British operated their concentration camps on the Kenyan people in the 1950s & into the 1960s (British had also previously operated concentration camps in the continent of Africa).
The British termed their concentration camps “The Pipeline.” Inmates of the camps suffered appallingly; amongst the routine tortures, rape was used as a regular weapon, and broken bottles were used on the private parts of both male and female prisoners, with people also beaten to death, murdered as an example to others, and on and on.

@caesar963
I know quite a lot about the “Congo Crisis” as I wrote my dissertation on it about 10 years ago as a mature student. My ability to recall a lot of the things I’ve learned is sketchy though. Suffice to say, if I were to dig it out you’d learn quite a bit yourself as I managed to go pretty deep! I understand you bringing up other examples to argue with some of the other commenters here, but it’s also important to keep to topic - again, Lumumba was the CIA and the Belgians.
Yes, the British Empire had its camps and its atrocities but even those couldn’t come close to what the Belgians inflicted on the Congo. But this isn’t a sport and shouldn’t be treated as such.

@caesar963
I even managed to source the transcript of a meeting years later where CIA station chief Larry Devlin first admitted to receiving and then disposing of poison substances meant for Lumumba’s assassination. He poured them into the Congo river. The final murder was carried out by Belgian special forces.

The “Great Games” & proxy wars engaged in by the various powers were/are beyond disgusting. Real people being ruthlessly instrumentalised in order to deny the actual enemy; violation of fundamental human rights norms & further destabilising of troubled regions.
And with evil actors like former-KGB man, Putin, it’s like we’ve been thrown back into the mid-20th c Cold War era, with sovereign states being invaded & innocent populations subject to torture, rape & murder. Putin is using actual nazis as his brutal minions (& he has his sleazy cheerleader prop bots right here). And African resources are again being drained & plundered by another “great power” - this time the genocidal Chinese regime.
November 23rd, 2023
Always Putin and ‘The Chinese’. Never the CIA or Washington, Israel or any other Western acolytes.
‘Putin is using actual nazis as his brutal minions’. That’s ‘cheerleader prop bot; stuff straight from a CIA funded hate site, swallowed whole and straight out of the narcissistic alimentary canal. The real Nazis are the Azovs of Ukraine, never given a mensh here from the narc.
Has the narcissist ever claimed a massacre was genocide when Washington did not?
Or said it was not, when Washington said it was?
That’s some good cheerleader prop-botting right there.
Genocide is going on in Gaza right now, but Washington is okay with it. So The Narc is too.
Good to see ’sleazy’ taken out for a run again. It’s been missed.

Thank you for the book! Ceasar963 my friend how come Putin and Xi irritate you but not what Bibi is doing?
November 23rd, 2023
The Putin prop bot, Wobbly1933, has consistently failed to meet the requisite standards for rational discourse. And while such people do suffer from mental health problems, with Wobbly’s isolation, racist bigotry, bitter Jew hatred & copy/paste from its Hate Sites most probably being a reflection of more serious personal vulnerability & lack of care, it must be observed that its mockery of victims of rape, torture & murder (”Human rights blah blah!” & “Like Ukrainian (victims of rape/torture) were perfect!” etc.) & its genocide denial/support, represent wholly unacceptable outbursts on this, or any other, site.
The notorious Putin prop (such as “Ukrainian nazis!” or the expedient “Sudetenlander” contrivance he used) was weaponised in order to blame Ukrainian victims of invasion, rape, torture & mass murder.
The truth is that Russian units who took part in the invasion are themselves nazis & linked to neo-nazism, such as the Rusich Group & within the Wagner Group. Russian neo-nazis also played an important role among the Russian proxy forces in Donbas, & were also in action against Syrians.
The Putin regime cultivated its own homegrown Nazis. Ukrainian state has protected minorities like Crimean Tatars & LGBTQ+ people, who are subject to brutal persecution in Russia. Neo-nazi Russian militias fight on behalf of Russia, in Ukr & Syr. While some joined Russian mercenary companies - Wagner is best known - an unknown number joined, & trained under, Rusich, as well as the Russian Imperial Movement & its paramilitary unit, Russian Imperial Legion.
Milchakov, a former paratrooper, & avowed Nazi, has been identified as the co-leader of Rusich, along with Yan Petrovsky.
The neo-nazi Russian Imperial Movement has provided paramilitary-style training to white supremacists & neo-Nazis in Europe & works to rally these groups into a common front against their enemies. The movement has two training facilities in St. Petersburg, used for woodland & urban assault, tactical weapons, & hand-to-hand combat training.
Denis Gariyev, head of the neo-nazi Russian Imperial Movement, also created a related organisation called Reserve Squad, which received multimillion-dollar orders from the Interior Ministry, Federal Security Service, & Federal Protective Service, which is the Russian government agency charged with providing bodyguard protection to top Kremlin officials.
The Putin prop of “US & Europe want to destroy you!” is also deployed by the regime in Russia; along with the “nazi” & “Sudetenlander” prop. Some “useful id!ots” - as in former decades - uncritically consume this obvious prop. Similar to to “the Jew & American are uniquely evil,” or “the Jew controls everything.”
It’s just standard operating procedure in undemocratic despotisms.

dave my friend, while you & I were horrified at the atrocities & massacres committed (filmed & celebrated) by genocidal Hamas on Oct 7th, & depressed by subsequent violence, this was all the reasonably foreseeable outcome to such an atrocious attack. Consequently, Hamas & their Iranian supporters would have planned for such eventualities (Hamas leadership do not live in Gaza). This was the necessary result. Hamas & Islamic Jihad already terrorise, steal from, torture & murder their own people, so their lack of concern is unsurprising. They persecute women & gay people, murder political opponents, & steal/control all resources in order to procure more weapons of useless death.
Depressingly, it’s difficult to see how this cycle can be resolved.

the CIA are doing their best to spread freedom and wholesome American values around the world. Didn’t any of you watch McGuyver growing up?
November 24th, 2023
The error is in imagining that freedom, liberal democracy, the rule of law, the rights-based legal order - that these are universal values. They’re really not. They’re actually hated, quite often. The error was in looking around the world, and thinking that everyone wanted the same thing.

“The error is in imagining that freedom, liberal democracy, the rule of law, the rights-based legal order - that these are universal values. They’re really not. They’re actually hated, quite often. The error was in looking around the world, and thinking that everyone wanted the same thing.”
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…..
Really!!!
There is no end to this delusion and lack of historical and political insight.
I can hardly keep a straight face even behind my screen. There is only one guy or maybe girl that brings me to tears of laughter on this platform.
November 26th, 2023
Lets talk about freedom, liberal democracy and the rule of law for instance.
Julian Assange, even though he is not a US citizen and his WikiLeaks site is not a US-based publication, is charged under the US Espionage Act for making public numerous US war crimes.
Assange, currently housed in a high security prison in London, is fighting a losing battle in the British courts to block his extradition to the United States, where he faces 175 years in prison.
This hypocrisy is not new. There is no moral difference between the saturation bombing the US carried out on civilian populations since World War II, including in Vietnam Cambodia, Laos, Afghanistan and Iraq.
There will be no prosecution of the US military and political leadership for the war crimes they carried out in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Libya, or a generation earlier in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos. The atrocities they commit, such as My Lai, where 500 unarmed Vietnamese civilians were gunned down by US soldiers, which are made public, are dealt with by finding a scapegoat, usually a low-ranking officer who is given a symbolic sentence. Lt. William Calley served three years under house arrest for the killings at My Lai.
Eleven US soldiers, none of whom were officers, were convicted of torture at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. But the architects and overlords of the industrial slaughter, including Gen. Curtis LeMay, Harry S. Truman, Richard Nixon, Henry Kissinger, Lyndon Johnson, Gen. William Westmoreland, George W. Bush, Gen. David Petraeus, Barack Obama and Joe Biden are never held to account. They leave power to become venerated elder statesmen.
This is how your “freedom, liberal democracy and the rule of law” are being demonstrated very day!
November 26th, 2023
Another clear example:
As Russian troops continue their assault on Ukraine, Western countries persist in invoking international law, imposing crippling sanctions against Russian leaders and entities while publicly supporting Ukrainian armed resistance and opening their borders with open arms to refugees.
However, we see such support utterly absent for people enduring Israel’s illegal occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem as well as its blockade of Gaza. Why is there such blatant double standards in the mainstream support for people resisting apartheid colonial oppression and ongoing aggression?
It’s very frustrating and infuriating for Palestinians as they have been constantly criminalized and told that they don’t have the right to resist and labelled as both terrorists and anti-semitic whenever they ask for their rights.
Undoubtedly, it is such a glaring contradiction to many observers when evaluating these sorts of hypocrisies and double standards. Israeli occupation amounts to ethnic cleansing and racial discrimination as recognized by human rights organizations. In addition to attacks on religious sanctity and complete lack of respect for international law, we find no one holding Israel responsible for behaving as a state above the law.
Clearly “these are universal values”…
November 27th, 2023
Indeed, that copy/paste only serves to support & reinforce my point - interventions in opposing systems do not work. Precisely that freedom, liberal democracy, rule of law, the rights-based legal order - these are decidedly not universal values. We see that they’re actually hated. Our error lay in looking at the world, & thinking everyone wanted the same thing.
On Assange: he intentionally & blatantly wait out the Statute of Limitations on four serious charges: unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation & rape - by hiding in an embassy (approaching it in disguise - after losing his appeal against a European arrest warrant. He has been found guilty of breaching the Bail Act).
The operative legal factor is that Assange waited out the Statute for all the charges by sheltering in the embassy for almost 7 yrs, which just happens to exceed the prescribed legal time period.
Assange can no longer be prosecuted due to the expedient passage of time.
Power politics is an ever-present factor. US wrongdoers ought to face justice. But power ensured that genocidal planners & perpetrators, such as Lenin, Stalin, Mao, etc. - never had to be confronted with their unprecedented crimes.
Few of the criminal perpetrators ever face justice, such as (with a few exceptions) the Taliban, Saddam & his fellow criminals who carried out war crimes incl use of poison gas, Assad et al, Pol Pot & the Khmer Rouge, Gaddafi, the Vietnamese who ran concentration camps for their own people, Putin currently, the Kims, Mugabe, Idi Amin, - and terrorist organisations such as Hamas, Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, the Iranian regime (biggest sponsor of terror in the region), Fatah, Al Qaeda, ISIS, etc. etc.
Saddam & Gaddafi were finally killed by their people.
Were genocidal Hamas merely “asking for their rights” with their recorded & celebrated atrocities & massacres of October 7th? The largest murder of Jewish people since the Holocaust?
Subsequent violence was the reasonably foreseeable outcome to such an atrocious attack. Hamas & their Iranian supporters would have planned for such eventualities (Hamas leadership do not live in Gaza). This was the necessary result. Hamas & Islamic Jihad already terrorise, steal from, torture & murder their own people, so their lack of concern is unsurprising. They persecute women & gay people, murder political opponents, & steal/control all resources in order to procure more weapons of useless death. The cycle goes on & on.
Civilian suicide bombers are incentivised by cash rewards to their families from the West Bank regime (money contribute by my country & other EU states).
Thank God these are not universal values. In fact the constitute the violent rejection of civilised liberal democracy, freedom, rule of law, & the rights-based legal order
Indeed - another clear example: Russian troops continuing their assault on the innocent people of Ukraine, the rape, torture & murder of these human beings - in an unwinnable war. Why, & for what? Consequently, Western countries must invoke international law on behalf of the innocent people of Ukraine, & impose deservedly crippling sanctions on corrupt, imperialist Russian leaders & entities while publicly supporting Ukrainian armed resistance & self-defence against brutal invasion, & we must open our borders with open arms to refugees. Would that Putin & his fellow criminals - including his neo-nazi support - could be brought to justice, along with all the others.
However, you won’t be able to cope or counter any of this, because you can only copy/paste, reproduce obvious con theories, abuse & repeat. QED in 3,2,1…

Unlawful coercion, two counts of sexual molestation and rape??
There is no end to this illusion and dystopia!
Thanks to the investigative work and perseverance of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, the truth is gradually being revealed
One of the most successful false news stories of the last decade is the story of two women who filed a rape complaint against Julian Assange with the Swedish police in August 2010, and that the founder of Wikileaks escaped from the Swedish justice system by fleeing to England. The advantage of the Swiss Nils Melzer is that he speaks fluent Swedish, and was then able to consult the original documents. And then, to his amazement, it turned out that the course of events was quite different.
Thanks to Melzer’s research, the claim that the founder of Wikileaks systematically fled Swedish justice is clearly false. According to Melzer, “it is the opposite. Mr Assange contacted the Swedish authorities on several occasions because he wanted to talk about these allegations. The authorities weighed in the balance”.
Thanks to the investigation and the perseverance of the UN special rapporteur on torture, Nils Melzer, the truth is gradually coming out: “The Swedish authorities were never interested in Assange’s testimony. They deliberately left him in the dark. But it also allowed them to control him. Imagine facing rape charges for nine and a half years by an entire state team and the media but not being able to defend yourself because the charges were never brought.”
Thanks to the research and perseverance of the UN special rapporteur on torture, Nils Melzer, the truth is gradually coming out: the two women obtained a legal representative who was “by chance” the partner of the former minister of justice, Thomas Bodström. He maintained a confidential relationship with the United States and has worked closely with the CIA. In the meantime, Assange requested permission to leave the country and even received authorization.
Assange has been indicted under the Espionage Act. It’s another shameful chapter in its sordid history from its origins, should be stricken from the books. The act has no place in a free and democratic society. We should, perhaps, not be surprised that the act is now being used to punish the exercise of journalism. Letting citizens know what is being done in their name is an unforgivable assault against the majesty of the state. The crime of the indictment under this disgraceful legislation is compounded by the years of imprisonment and torture that Julian Assange has already suffered.
The targets of the indictment, however, reach far beyond their immediate victim. They reach, in fact, to all of us who hope to understand what is happening in the world, and to the journalism profession, whose task it is to perform this essential service in a democratic order. Those who seek to perform this honorable task are under harsh attack in these troubled days. That’s more reason to assure the attack on journalism will not be joined by the most powerful state in human history.
In short, free Julian Assange, without further unconscionable delay.

Power politics is an ever-present factor. US wrongdoers ought to face justice!!!
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh….
On what planet? Where do you come from? Which Hollywood movie you are trying to imagine here?
Please stop, I can’t stop laughing…
Let’s talk about your movie, defending the hypocrisy of the west!
Since Russian troops set foot in Ukraine, Western mainstream media has been decrying Russia’s aggression and cheering the Ukrainian people’s bravery and resilience. On the contrary, we witness an entirely different picture to what’s going on in occupied Palestine. The racist dimension is crystal clear: embracing freedom fighters who are white, happily embracing them by Western pundits, and Palestinians raising the exact same slogans of peace, justice and equality being in the same situation a Ukrainians being labelled as terrorists. The role of the Western media has been appendage of the propaganda of their governments and they have been just as complicit in the propagation of how we think about “terrorism” and “freedom fighters,” derived openly from a racist framework. If the white, European lives are being attacked that warrants swift actions and accountability – but not for Muslims living in the ostensibly ‘uncivilized regions’.
The applicability of human rights and international laws are supposed to be universal but Israel being considered the ‘beacon of light and democracy’ of the West is granted unequivocal impunity from its war crimes and crimes against humanity, not to mention its casual violation of a number of UN resolutions. Israel has been persecuting any and all dissident voices and has politicized the definition of anti-semitism in order to label any criticism of Israel as anti-Semitic. Last year, the UN Human Rights Council accused Israel of being guilty of the crime of Apartheid under international law. Despite this damning indictment of the nature of the state of Israel, it shamelessly ignored the ruling and had the audacity to vote to suspend Russia – even though Israel does not even believe in this body. The double standards, hypocrisy and selective outrage of the so-called Western human rights champions seems to never end. After four major Israeli wars in Gaza in just the past few years, it’s clear enough that fighting off a military violation or aggression against your people is totally dependent on the identity of the aggressor and the victim.
So, this is freedom, liberal democracy and the rule of law…
November 27th, 2023
We will not take you seriously…
We can not take you seriously…
Your words reflect the contours of European racism. It’s part of European culture to have racist attitudes toward the Third World, including the US, it is part of Europe in that respect. Naturally the Jewish community shared the attitudes of the rest of Europe, not surprising. There certainly are such things inside Israel. The one that probably so obvious is the anti-Arab racism, because that requires subjugation of a defeated and conquered people and that leads to racism. If you’re sitting with your boot on somebody’s neck, you’re going to hate him, because that’s the only way that you can justify what you’re doing, so subjugation automatically yields racism, and you can’t overcome that. Furthermore, anti-Arab racism is rampant in the United States and much of the West, there’s no question about that. The only kind of racism that can be openly expressed with outrage is anti-Arab racism. You don’t put caricatures of blacks in the newspapers any more; you do put caricatures of Arabs.
November 28th, 2023
…QED proven, unfortunately. The obvious con theories, copy/paste, abuse & repeat are still present.
“Unlawful coercion, 2 counts of sexual molestation & rape” - The serious charges from the Swedish authorities, yes.
I also don’t think you’re using the word “dystopia” correctly. Unless you imagine that is Sweden’s state.
Yeah, I’ve seen that con theory spin relating to Assange before. That stuff revolves round the net, you have to exercise judgment, or you fall down the conspiracy rabbit hole. (”Pressenza” - an intensely dubious source, featuring, inter alia, enthusiastically uncritical puff pieces on human rights-abusing Iranian regime.)
Central points: these grave charges were never dismissed, Swedish prosecutors discontinued preliminary investigations due to their being unable to proceed while Assange remained in hiding in London. (He hid there - approaching in disguise - after losing his appeal against a Euro arrest warrant. He’s been found guilty of breaching the Bail Act.)
Key legal factor is that Assange expediently waited out Statute of Limitations for all charges by hiding in embassy for almost 7 yrs, which just happens to exceed prescribed legal time period. Correct, legitimate approach would have been to test charges with viva voce evidence, not to hide.
Consequently, while Swedish prosecutor retained full confidence in charges made, Assange can no longer be prosecuted due to that convenient passage of time.
Sweden’s justice system, in global terms, is beyond reproach. Top-ranked countries in 2023 World Justice Project Rule of Law Index are Denmark, Norway, Finland & Sweden. Followed by everyone else on the planet.
Clearly, the charges ought not have been frustrated by manifestly expedient manipulation of Statute of Limitations.
Criminal justice - its operations & procedures - in Sweden is not a function of “political propaganda.” However, propaganda militating against this is invalid.
“Power politics is ever-present factor. US wrongdoers ought face justice” - Yes, precisely as I observed. All wrongdoers ought to face justice. But power ensured that genocidal planners & perpetrators, such as Lenin, Stalin, Mao, etc. - never had to be confronted with their unprecedented crimes. This does not change. Putin, Kims, Assad & Iranian regime are all protected by their power. Considering what they do to their people & to others - would that it was otherwise & they could finally be prosecuted.
“Since Russ troops set foot in Ukr, West media been decrying Russ aggression & cheering Ukr people’s bravery” - Well, the key point there is that Russia did actually invade (”set foot” is a sleazy euphemism here) & has continuously brutally targeted civilians with rape, torture & murder. These are gross & illegal human rights violations. This is undeniable. Yet mindless bots defend Putin’s imperialism & human rights abuses.
“On contrary, we witness different picture in Palestine…racist dimension is clear: embracing freed fighters who white…Palestinians labelled as terrorists” - This is not what the media is presenting in my country. And it’s not what is being presented everywhere else either. Consequently, your frame is itself racist.
We mustn’t seek to deny or omit appalling atrocities & massacres committed against human beings on October 7th, which provoked latest round of hostilities, & which Hamas et al entirely planned for - this is outcome they desired.
“this is freed, lib democracy & rule of law” - As I also observed, it is entirely erroneous to imagine that freedom, liberal democracy, rule of law, & the rights-based legal order are universal values. They’re absolutely not. They’re actually hated, quite often; because not everyone has these traditions. Other peoples have traditions which are absolutely opposed to democracy, liberty, rule of law & human rights. Given that sad reality, this must be respected. The mistake was in looking around the world, & thinking that everyone wanted the same thing.
On Israel & its neighbours, we all hope that they can one day live in peace, although that prospect seems very remote. If all the genocidal organisations would drop their policies of “extermination” & genocide of an entire people, this could represent a beneficial statement of intent, & grounds for proceeding. Until that time, I really don’t think so.
On racism, that certainly does feature, especially with “extermination” policies.
On the idea that “there’s only 1 racism” - I can easily refute that. When the British had Brexit referendum, their ancient hatred & vile racism towards the Irish people came to the fore once again.
November 29th, 2023
Yes dystopia, this is how the so-called civilized nations run their business in this world and Sweden with its subservience to the US is a glaring example.
The only con theory that I have heard of is coming from people like you, who adapted the US narrative blindly.
Julian Assange is one of the political prisoners that the US claims not to have. The UK is again the good vassal, keeping him locked up until the Biden administration finds an opportune time to ship him off to a kangaroo court. Everyone who believes in press freedom and who opposes imperialism must be a staunch Assange defender.
December 10 is International Human Rights Day. It is always a sham holiday for the United States, which locks up its own people at rates exceeding those of every other country, and routinely makes war against the rest of the world. In 2021 the date was treated as even more of a mockery than in the past. Joe Biden convened a bizarre democracy summit, wherein he declared other nations good or bad based on whether they go along with the dictates of the U.S. empire. Although it was in London where the U.S. behaved in a particularly shameful manner, working with the United Kingdom to secure the right to extradite Julian Assange.
In 2018 Assange was indicted in the Eastern District Court of Virginia, a hanging court where acquittals are rare. His offense is one that the system will not tolerate. Over a period of years his organization, Wikileaks, revealed U.S. crimes committed around the world.
Wikileaks revealed war crimes committed during the George W. Bush administration in their Iraq War Logs and Afghanistan War Logs. Private Chelsea Manning leaked the Collateral Murder video, which shows the deaths of civilians, including two Reuters reporters, as they were gunned down by a U.S. army helicopter crew in 2007.
Media outlets such as the New York Times, the Washington Post and The Guardian worked with Assange for years, printing Wikileaks revelations on a regular basis. Yet they have said little in his defense ever since he was arrested on April 11, 2019. Neither have the liberal elites, who parrot the falsehood that Assange is responsible for Hillary Clinton’s 2016 defeat. According to democratic propagandists, Russian operatives hacked the Democratic National Committee computers and gave a trove of embarrassing emails to Wikileaks. Hillary Clinton even refers to the organization as “Russian Wikileaks” just in case anyone forgot to blame others for her political debacle.
Ultimately the U.S. and U.K. couldn’t be bad actors at all if powerful media organizations behaved like independent entities and not as an arm of the state. Assange has no influential friends and sits in Belmarsh prison, having suffered a stroke on October 27, 2021. His physical and mental health deteriorate while unscrupulous people in London and Washington decide his fate.
The United States should not be allowed to use the Espionage Act or any other mechanism to snatch up anyone, anywhere and charge with a crime of dubious legality. If they are allowed to do so in this case they will certainly do it again. Anyone who wants to expose high crimes will find themselves in Assange’s position. People who oppose the empire and its machinations are all at risk if Assange is extradited.
November 29th, 2023
On Israel, really?
On what planet? Where do you come from? Which Hollywood movie you are trying to imagine here?
Let’s mention this example again, Washington’s enthusiastic diplomatic and financial support of Ukraine’s right of self-defense and resistance against Russia is shrouded in terms of human rights. But at the same time turning a blind eye and not paying heed to the brutal atrocities committed by colonial settler apartheid Israel against unarmed Palestinians is what we have seen time and again.
This is the selective championing of the human rights mantra. If we dig deeper beyond the racist nature of this policy, we can discern its realpolitik, the maintenance of Western hegemony, shifting alliances and geopolitical aims of the region which compel Western states to act accordingly. Moreover, the racialization here involves the broader salient features of the ‘War on Terror’ where pundits claim Europe is civilized and the Middle East is uncivilized.
So if Israel (and its backers) takes the position that it is the one civilized actor in this broader uncivilized region, it then essentially has the ability to police with impunity people the backward, barbarians – whether they are Palestinians, Syrians and Arabs at large while this is not the case with white European, ‘modernized’ Ukrainians.
