“Vital and indispensable… Fighting falsehood is all that matters if democracy is to survive, and Draper comes with the fiercest weapon yet: truth.”
— The Washington Post
“Engrossing.”
— Michelle Goldberg, The New York Times
“Draper provides pungent new anecdotes about and original analysis of the most outrageous actors [in the Trump era].”
— The Guardian
The disturbing eyewitness account of how a new breed of Republicans—led by Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, and Madison Cawthorn—far from moving on from Trump, have taken the politics of hysteria to even greater extremes and brought American democracy to the edge
The violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, was a terrible day for American democracy, but many people dared to hope that at least it would break the fever that had overcome the Republican Party and banish Trump’s relentless lies about the stealing of the 2020 election.
That is not what happened. Instead, ‘the big steal’ has become dogma among an ever-higher percentage of American Republicans. What happened to the Republican Party, and America, during the Trump presidency is a story we more or less think we know. What has happened to the party since, it turns out, is even more disquieting. That is the story Robert Draper tells in Weapons of Mass Delusion.
Through his extraordinarily intrepid cross-country reporting, Draper chronicles the road from January 6 to the 2022 midterms among the Republican base and in the U.S. Congress, rendering unforgettable portraits of how Marjorie Taylor Greene and her ilk came to shape their party’s terms of engagement to an extent that would have been unimaginable even five years ago.
He also brings to life the efforts of a dwindling group of Republicans who are willing to push back against the falsehoods, in the face of a group of ascendent demagogues who are merrily weaponizing them.
With a base whipped up into a perpetual frenzy of outrage by conspiracy theories—not just about the big steal but about COVID and vaccines, pedophilia and Antifa and Black Lives Matter and George Soros and President Obama, and on and on and on—the forces of reason within the GOP are on the defensive, to put it mildly.
The book also benefits greatly from reporting conducted in Texas, Arizona, Georgia, New Hampshire, and other bellwether states in the country of the mind one might call a fever of undending conspiracies.
Robert Draper has been a wise, fearless, and fair-minded chronicler of the American political scene for over twenty-five years. He has seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. He has never seen it this ugly. Ultimately, this book tells the story of a fearful test of our ability, as a country, to hold together a system of government grounded in truth and the rule of law.
Written on the eve of the 2022 midterm elections, Draper’s account of a party teetering on the precipice of madness reveals how the GOP fringe became its center of gravity.

Cheers! I can picture the MAGA enthusiasts and hardcore radicals who thought they were conservative having a bit of an existential crisis with this stellar investigative journalism delivered in crystal-clear prose. Quite the reality check!

It took the Republican Party fifty years to get from Richard Nixon to Donald Trump.
But they made it.

How weird? We are so much better off now than 4 years ago. People could afford groceries, Buy a house, not in any new wars, Men not dressed as women braking women’s bones in sports, Young children not being subjected to pornography in school libraries, Fuel not doubled in price. A President that doesn’t literally sniff little kids on national TV. Keep telling yourself MAGA this and MAGA that. Regular working people want balance, not whatever this “Democratic” Utopia is? Regular people are the majority, not the freaks. If its so bad, go somewhere else and stop destroying whats left of this country.

Thank you, I appreciate the share.

@Sithjedimaster. If you think all the things that are happening now, didn’t happen when your Orange Messiah was in office, you really have no concept whatsoever of how things actually work in the real world. I’d pity you, but you enjoy your ignorance.

Why doesn’t this guy write about the DemonRat Party? It’s Nazi roots, it’s Jim Crow Laws, and it’s destruction of free speech and democracy?
A party currently run by an imbecile
Suggested title: The Anal Wart known as the Democratic Party

@Adol I have no Messiah. I’m not distracted by what the media has focused on for the last 8 years. There is real suffering from working Americans, its tangible. Unlike the Pro Nouns, Fake Racism around every corner and Trump Derangement Syndrome. The Government is continuing to waste Trillions of our tax dollars with Proxy Wars and an Open border. But all you hear is MAGA this and that? Fearmongering plain and simple. No once cares about that, they want security and stability. At least the Adults paying attention.

@Sithjedimaster So, why is it that dissatisfaction with the state of the country is only valid if you can place the blame at the feet of a Democrat president? We’ve been in longer and bloodier armed conflicts under Republican leadership; Reagan gave us several generations’ worth of proxy wars; we had ACTUAL open borders to the south AND NORTH prior to WWI, but that has not been the case for roughly 100 years now, and anyone claiming borders are wide open now would claim as much no matter what was being done. Point of fact: Biden is building a wall, and YOU are still arguing that the border is wide open.

@Apollo60 Tell me you know no5thing about the history of Nazis without telling me you know nothing about the history of Nazis.
And those Democrats that enacted Jim Crow were the CONSERVATIVES of their day. You know, we call them Republicans today due to the party switch in the 60s.
But for some reason those on the right deny this occurred, despite overwhelming evidence.

No wonder Pooh-tin hasn’t got enough money to crush Ukraine, when he’s spending so much on puppet accounts that pump disinformation and destabilising guff all over this corner of the internet.

More projection from the most persistent hate group in human history. After 60-years, the “Democratic” Party continues to project its rich history of racism and white supremacy on others.
