Politicians are consistently voted the least trusted professional group by the UK public. They’ve recently become embroiled in scandals concerning sexual harassment and expenses. Every year, they introduce new legislation that doesn’t do what it sets out to achieve - often with terrible financial and human costs. But, with some notable exceptions, they are decent, hardworking people doing a hugely difficult and demanding job.
In this searching examination of our political class, award-winning journalist Isabel Hardman tries to square this circle. She lifts the lid on the strange world of Westminster and asks why we end up with representatives with whom we are so unhappy. Filled with forensic analysis and revealing reportage, this landmark and accessible book is a must-listen for anyone who wants to see a future with better government.

My gut reaction is because we’re a-holes. Democracy is the worst possible system of gov’t, except for all the others.
Thank you very much for this - looking forward to it.

JD has colourfully cracked it! We are inherently flawed beings; so anything of, by and for us will inevitably reflect who we are. This is why all attempts to create perfect, utopian systems are doomed to failure.
There will always be “people” who think that it is possible to create paradise, however, and will be prepared to inflict untold suffering in the implementation of their willed cretinism.
We have the media we deserve as well, of course.

There are simple things to make “democracy” work “better.” Why not ditch first-past-the-post and move to proportional representation? Then abolish the House of Lords and replace with democratically elected representatives. Integrate deliberative democracy to enhance the role of investigation and argument. Unfortunately, the democracy has got to want to change, so maybe it never will.

@kanguru - Spot-on concerning the House of Lords. PR also ensures that more people are represented. It’s not perfect (the Tories & Labour would prefer overall majorities rather than coalitions) but it is superior to the blunt first-past-the-post approach. Coalitions work in democracies because big catch-all parties represent inner compromises between conservative & liberal wings; they are something of a broad coalition in themselves.
The committee system works fairly well in Westminster. However, the British electorate are not accustomed to referendums, and given the recent experience - simplistic, binary choices are best avoided. They can be vastly abused and voters will use them as a vehicle for a wide panorama of unrelated protests and grievances. They can be properly democratic when the voters are properly informed, and know what the plebiscite is, and is not, about.
In Ireland, we use the PR STV (single transferable vote) system. It is the most fully representative method, but political scientists refer to as the most studied, and least copied electoral system. Because it’s a little bit complicated, and requires a measure of voter-sophistication (it’s not quite as complex as the method deployed by the Venetians to elect the Doge). Anyway, whatever model you use, you still end up with politicians!
Monarchy is also somewhat infantilising, but that’s not the most (de)pressing issue.

Here’s hoping the sock-wearing fairy on Canada’s Parliament Hill is out of a job come October 21. What a complete douch.
