Asylums are supposed to be in the past. However, though the buildings were closed, many of the practices lived on. In fact, more law-abiding Americans today are being involuntarily committed and forcibly treated “for their own good” than at any time in history.
In the first work of investigative journalism in decades to give a comprehensive view into contemporary psychiatric incarceration and forced interventions, Your Consent Is Not Required exposes how rising numbers of people from many walks of life are being subjected against their will to surveillance, indefinite detention, and powerful tranquilizing drugs, restraints, seclusion, and electroshock.
Driven partly by individuals’ genuine concerns for the “mental health” of others, and partly by institutions entangled with goals of power, profit, and social control, psychiatric coercion is increasingly used to: manage school children and the elderly; quell family conflicts; police the streets; control people in shelters, community living, and prisons; fraudulently increase hospital profits; “resolve” workplace disagreements; and detain protesters and discredit whistleblowers. Thoroughly researched, with alarming true stories and hard data from the US and Canada, Rob Wipond’s Your Consent Is Not Required builds an unassailable case for greater transparency, vigilance, and change.

Well, logging in and posting on qnon forms is a mental health issue. Better lock them up and drug the hell out of them. You can throw the big pharma and neo nazis in there too.
Very scary stuff. Ty for the upload.

I guess it depends on when you’re counting from, but I wouldn’t really call this a “rise in psychiatric detentions” :

Seems to have held pretty constant, at least in that half of the country covered. From what I can tell it’s not a political thing, red and blue states both do it pretty much the same amount, though Florida held the record in that study.
The one advantage to the unfunded deinstitutionalization movement in the US under Regan was that involuntary commitment happened a lot less, since there were fewer places to commit people to. The disadvantage was that some of those people actually needed help and never got it. For that reason, the claim that Regan created the current US homelessness crisis is at least partly valid.

Having worked in the field for over 30 years, in Florida, I can attest to both the abuses and the legitimate uses of their Baker act. The problem ends up being the classic your damned if you do and damned if you don’t dilemma. Case in point is the recent shooter in Jacksonville who had been involuntarily placed for examination but did not present with enough for anything more than that. As long as we have a profit motivated medical system these problems will persist and grow. Being a non profit ( which in my opinion is just a shell game) does not change things much since it still all ends up being about the money.
