Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States has sold over 2.5 million copies and is still required reading in some high school and college classrooms. But its polemic rewriting of American history as a story of oppression is an agenda-driven fairy tale that has no place in academia. In Debunking Howard Zinn, Mary Grabar debunks Howard Zinn’s lies and traces the damage his mega-bestseller has done to American education, culture, and politics.

I always saw that Zinn book and thought it looked interesting but never ended up reading it. I didnt know that it was required reading in alot of schools. This book sounds interesting. Im just wondering if I should listen to it, or go listen to the Zinn book and then this book. I dont want to be biased after all. Thanks for the upload

In which, a B-grade “historian” goes on a length ad hominem tirade against Zinn.

There has got to be a term which describes using another’s name to make one for yourself. Not quite coat-tails, and not reflected glory, but somewhere in the vicinity. Though she may well be self-made and making the most of the opportunities she made for herself…

the kind of people who actually finish Howard Zinn’s book as opposed to name-checking it are likelier to love America than than most. it’s a heavy lift and it’s not Gospel (no history book is) but if you are looking for ways to help America make good on its promises and ideals or just be a better American it’s worth taking a crack at it.

That’s a good point, brassy, a little idealism is no harm at all. However, in terms of strict, proper historiography, Zinn’s work, while it might be deeply affecting when read in one’s teens, it’s so overwhelmingly ideological, that it’s closer to zealous, vehement tract than valuable, disinterested history. There’s another apposite term for ideological history, of course.
To gain useful perspective and appropriate context, it’s best to view his work as an outmoded relic of an appalling century. Without that context, all that readers will receive is a distortion of the factual, historical record.

Zinn is a communist propagandist who didn’t know anything about history. If you think Zinn is an historian you are clueless about history.

Very poor work. There are well written concerns regarding Zinn but unfortunately this is not one of them. My main concern is this book makes outrageous claims, such as accusations of plagiarism by Zinn of large portions of his book (from his own friends apparently), without bothering to cite any real evidence for such claims that attack his character and credibility. Even what is put forth is just careless. The book claims that because similar source material was used by several historians they must have therefore plagiarized. This displays a poor understanding of the nature of historical citations and history in general.

Filled with insults, diatribes, and reactionary vitriol. As far as sticking it to Zinn, mission accomplished. When it comes to the material arguments, there is next to no history presented in this screed. If Zinn’s People’s History made you uncomfortable, good. It was meant to. But if this is the best his detractors can do, Zinn’s History is hardly threatened at all.

I fact checked howard Zinn’s work and he was not at all wrong. This book unfortunately didn’t change my mind.
