From the best-selling author of Saving Capitalism and The Common Good, an urgent analysis of how the “rigged” systems of American politics and power operate, how this status quo came to be, and how average citizens can enact change.
Millions of Americans have lost confidence in our political and economic system. After years of stagnant wages, volatile job markets, and an unwillingness by those in power to deal with profound threats such as climate change, there is a mounting sense that the system is fixed, serving only those select few with enough money to secure a controlling stake. With the characteristic clarity and passion that has made him a central civil voice, Robert B. Reich shows how wealth and power have interacted to install an elite oligarchy, eviscerate the middle class, and undermine democracy.
Using Jamie Dimon, the chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase as an example, Reich exposes how those at the top propagate myths about meritocracy, national competitiveness, corporate social responsibility, and the “free market” to distract most Americans from their accumulation of extraordinary wealth, and power over the system. Instead of answering the call to civic duty, they have chosen to uphold self-serving policies that line their own pockets and benefit their bottom line.
Reich’s objective is not to foster cynicism, but rather to demystify the system so that we might instill fundamental change and demand that democracy works for the majority once again.

Everything bad in your life must be somebody else’s fault.

@Insane - That sounds like the optimum problem-solving mechanism. I know that abstract, faceless billionaires have a direct hand in my own destructive, compulsive behaviour.
Everyone knows this, if they think creatively enough.
That’s why the author is trying to instill fundamentalist change.

The developed world needs these ideas now more than ever. The con that is neoliberalism has never been more obvious and glaring than it is right now, during the CoVid pandemic. Thanks for the upload!
Aww look at the little triggered neoliberal snowflake; knows he can’t hang in an intellectual discussion of his ideas so resorts to sarcastic dismissal and ad hominem #classictactic. Sounds a lot like a POTUS I know…

A plague* upon all of your clapped-out, brain-free, superannuated, senescent ideologies! Old atrocities in new bottles!
*Standard disclaimer: use of the term “plague” is licensed under conventional, colloquial usage. Deployment of the term is not contentiously intended to offend any party. Only left/right wing loons need feel stung.

The implication being there is nothing wrong with the system- just a few bad apples…LMFAO. That little novel virus going around just exposed said system for what it truly is - ROTTEN & rot cannot be fixed or reformed. A failed system. All is not lost - just most of it & what’s gone will never return. It’ll never go back to the way it was. Them days are over. Did y’all think you could run a high energy civilization by printing money forever? QE, ZIRP & record consumer & household debt growing every year. Covid-19 was just the pin that popped that massive everything bubble. Get ready for a much smaller world & suffering that’ll make the 1930’s look like a picnic. Did y’all prep for this? I did starting 15 years ago when the writing was on the wall IN GIANT CAPITAL LETTERS. On a happier note for those in debt, most of it is never getting paid back. Not so happy if one depends on or is planning on depending on gov, corporate & union pensions & medical. Enjoy your helicopter money. Party’s all most over. Helicopter money is the last call.

Happily, I don’t suffer from personal debt; but I do (rather unwisely) partake of National Debt, which, because of our interesting times, has just grown enormously. Of course, it’ll never be repaid, but the beast has to be serviced on the regular.
However, hasn’t this odious virus exposed virtually all systems - of every political hue on the spectrum? That’s in the nature of these crises. Some nations are faring comparatively well. Near the epicentre, South Korea & Taiwan are amongst the best global performers. We could attribute this to the fact that, as they have evil, anti-social, unpredictable regimes as their bad neighbours, they must be in a constant state of preparedness, for any & every eventuality. In America, it looks as though the Trumpster fired too many people who could’ve been on point for something like this. But again, that’s site-specific (swamp-specific?) & localised - not systemic, per se.
As to the “macro” - the system has repeatedly demonstrated itself to be adaptive, malleable, evolutive - it’s been written off before, and has resiled before. (When have we not lived in a time of change?)
Although, who knows? We might have to face off in the old Thunderdome after all.

Unfortunately it looks as though we have(most notably through this clown potus) shown the world that are pants are down and that we are not prepared for much anything right now. Half of the uninfected still think this is a hoax made up to make trump look bad. Kinda like the Metric tons of carbon we are sending up into the sky everyday the reality won’t be clear until it’s too late.

Much appreciated, thank you!

Fix it? So is this some kind of joke or just an old book?
Should the Keyword Satire be added as a seventh descriptor?
Thx as usual to the comment section for the entertainment was just what I needed with my morning coffee.

ROLE REVERSAL
The liberals that today are saying the direction we are heading is wrong are the same “progressive” liberals saying we need to go back to the old traditional power establishment of yesterday leaving liberals as the new neocons of old system they used to hate.
Today’s conservatives represent the new counter culture fighting the old liberal power establishment of yesterday.
