“The most comprehensive account of the GOP and its competing impulses” (Los Angeles Times), now updated to cover the Trump presidency and its aftermath.
When Abraham Lincoln helped create the Republican Party on the eve of the Civil War, his goal was economic opportunity for all Americans. Yet the party quickly became mired in an identity crisis. Would it be the party of democratic ideals? Or the party of moneyed interests?
In To Make Men Free, acclaimed historian Heather Cox Richardson traces the shifting ideology of the Republican Party from the antebellum era to the Great Recession. While progressive Republicans like Teddy Roosevelt and Dwight Eisenhower revived Lincoln’s vision and expanded the government, their opponents appealed to Americans’ latent racism and xenophobia to regain political power, linking taxation and regulation to redistribution and socialism. In the modern era, the schism within the Republican Party has grown wider, pulling the GOP ever further from its founding principles.
Now with an epilogue that reflects on the Trump era and what is likely to come after it, To Make Men Free is a sweeping history of the party that was once considered America’s greatest political hope, but now lies in disarray.

Raven437 Parroting leftist talking points
The Democratic Party has its roots in the Nazi Party
December 6th, 2021
@apollo60 - the Democratic Party predates the Nazis (the National Socialist Party) by 100+ years.
December 6th, 2021
@appollo60 Keep sucking that republican cock, one day it may even trickle down on your face. :)
December 6th, 2021
I’m disappointed you didn’t bring up the KKK again Apollo. Anything to do with a former leader of theirs running for office as a Republican in Georgia?
December 6th, 2021
It would do a lot of good if the regulars who always bring up instances of racism in the Democrats’ past (yet have never heard of Dixiecrats or the Southern Strategy) to read this book.
All of the right-wing automatons on this site have a child’s understanding of politics, and no desire to improve that. Just keep throwing out stupid names, Apollo, like so much infant faeces.

“The Democratic Party has its roots in the Nazi Party”
Are you actually this stupid, or are you a bot?
December 6th, 2021
@tenbenson - apollo60 is actually that stupid, somehow
republicans who fought to free slaves were literally the SJW’s of the time. the opposite of modern GOP

@iaudiophile
No, he is deeply stupid. A cursory look through his comment history will tell you that.
And as for your asinine “SJW” comment, I literally just said as much!
December 6th, 2021
AH hahahaha! all the lefties losing their minds over a book that tells them how they have been on the wrong side of history forever. Most likely they haven’t even listened to it. Not that they can break out of their conditioning.

@lakealex07
The look on your face will be a pretty picture when you check out this book in more detail and realise how utterly mistaken you are.
Hilarious gotcha moment! You don’t often get one in real time!

@iaudiophile
Seems I misread your post. I’m obviously getting dumber the longer I stay in these comments.
The SJW thing was still a bit of a cheap shot though.
December 6th, 2021
Thanks again, yoshq. That Eisenhower dude was probably yer last decent president. Peeps like Ike.

@lakealex07
Also, please point out “all the lefties losing their minds”, as I have a suspicion they only exist in your head.

skay
Hitler learned about removing “undesirables” from society from Margaret Sanger, hero of Planned Parenthood. He saw that she was encouraging society to do, to eliminate “inferior” races, blacks, mental deficient people, and other “problems” of society, he loved that idea. In fact, he admired her very much. She gave him the idea of eliminating the same type of people, and Jews of course, during his reign of terror. The Democrats were carrying out Hitler’s ideas well before Hitler, yes. Nazism has its roots in the Democratic Party is more accurate. My error

From a jurisprudential pov (for the legal eagles out there) James Q. Whitman’s book “Hitler’s American Model: The United States and the Making of Nazi Race Law” is worth a read. In fact, all of Whitman’s books are.

Anyone have the rest of Heather Cox Richardson’s books?
December 7th, 2021
The GOP has long stopped being the party of Linlcon from the time of LBJ. Thats why the current GOP are filled with pro-confederates, Tikitorch white chanting “Jews will not replace us”.
December 7th, 2021
I see from the book’s description, as well as these comments, that people are very confused. In addition to the usual lying leftists in here. lmao!
December 7th, 2021
Yes, to make men free… women not so much.
December 7th, 2021
I won’t insult your intelligence by suggesting that you really believe what you just said.

The GOP is the single biggest threat to Democracy that the US faces right now. From Gerrymandering to the GOP’s cult-like obedience to Big Angry Orange Baby. It’s a disgrace.
Not all Republicans are Racist, but all Racists vote Republican.
December 8th, 2021
I reckon political apathy, ideological extremism, & unresponsive institutions (democratic deficit) are the most critical threats to democracy. Just to be a little less parochial.
December 8th, 2021
@caesar963 If political apathy is on your radar, you haven’t been watching how the nation is being divided.
Orange baby spent mightily, so don’t cry about the deficit.
Parochial? lol For once we see someone trying to help citizens, rather than businesses.
December 8th, 2021
Uh, that’s not what democratic deficit means. That’s not what parochial means (the broader, general threats to democracy). Political apathy delivers appalling election results also, so that too (for the orange).
December 11th, 2021
Lakelax, did you actually listen to the book? Lol. No, clearly you didnt.
December 12th, 2021
It’s a cookbook.
